Chapter CHAPTER 7
Chapter 7: Conflicted
Chapter seven: Conflicted
Bernard
Alpha Ronald is not going to be pleased, he was a pompous man who took pride in his patrol wolves. He had once boasted that he had the most impenetrable territory of all the Packs in the surrounding areas. If he found out that his boundaries had been crossed by a lone wolf, his anger would be unleashed on everyone around including Elena but I wouldn’t risk it not with Elena. This is a secret I am going to keep away from him. I looked out into the distance, Jackson said that she came in from the west and a small group of wolves had been chasing her but they didn’t know how long she had been running. The only thing that lay to the west was a lot of no man’s land. The majority of the land was unclaimed territories that rogue where to roam on freely. It made sense why she had come in from there.
I hated to think about Elena as a rogue but that was exactly what she was. In our world, a rogue was not perceived in a good way. They have often exiled Pack members who failed to follow the rules or went against the Alpha. Many of them were traitors, murderers and thieves but I couldn’t imagine Elena being any of those things. The majority of rogues were killed on sight if they stepped into a Pack’s territory, it is the law that any rogue found crossing into Pack boundaries was at minimum to be returned to their Alpha to stand trial.
A part of me worried that Elena has revealed which Pack she came from to Nicholas and I feared my decision is going to be forced. I didn’t want to turn her in.
“You can’t continue to deny what you already know to be true.” My wolf reprimanded me again.
My wolf had been trying to tell me the same thing but I was the one who wasn’t listening. I knew I couldn’t deny the truth any longer. Elena is my mate and nothing is going to change that but I couldn’t allow myself to accept her. I already made a prior commitment to Helen, if I was to break this alliance, it could mean war for my Pack. Although my wolf didn’t like it, I have already made my decision. I had to find a way to push my feelings down for Elena. I needed to find a way to forget about the pull and her.
I was about to turn around to head back to my Pack when something caught my attention in the distance. I saw five black wolves teetering on the boundaries of the Dark Revan Pack. At first, I thought they were part of Alpha Ronald patrol but my wolf sensed otherwise. The wolves were outside and didn’t seem friendly.
As an Alpha, my wolf easily towered over theirs. They were watching me or more so, my boundaries. Although they hadn’t crossed over, so I couldn’t run them off. I waited to see what they would do but they didn’t move. They just stood in the tree line of the Dark Revan Pack boundaries waiting.
“What are they waiting for?” I asked myself. Were they waiting for Elena? Were these the wolves that chased her down when she crossed over into my boundaries? I lifted my head and sent a warning growl. I stared at each of them making sure they understood my threat. They waited for a while before they slunk into the shadows of the trees and took off. I had a feeling that they wouldn’t be gone for long and they would be back.
“Alpha Ronald, you an idiot?” I reprimanded my future father-in-law in my mind. Not only had Elena crossed his boundaries but these wolves were wandering around right on his borders and his men did nothing. If this was the Pack I was to inherit then a lot of things were in need of changing.
I huffed and took off running back to the mansion. The sun was peeking through the horizons of the mountain and I had been awake all through the night. My mind was plagued with the image of my mate and my conflicting emotions. I was in a battle between my head and mind. Not once in my life had I ever been so conflicted. I wanted to claim Elena but I knew I couldn’t have her.
Elena Pov.
I heard shuffling in my room and instantly I was on high alert. I sat up in the hospital bed and looked around for any possible threat.
“I am sorry, did I wake you up?” Liam’ voice hit my ears and I felt relaxed.
He moved to the window and opened the curtains. The morning sun streamed into my room, shedding light into the darkness. I didn’t remember falling asleep but then I knew it probably had something to do with Liam. After Nicholas left the room, doctor Liam gave me a sedative to help me sleep while he worked on my ribs. When Nicholas man-handled me, he cracked my ribs and since my wolf was still weak, she wasn’t healing me as quickly as Liam would have liked.
“It is fine, what is the time now?” I asked him.
“It is midday.” He responded and gave me a small smile. My eyes widened, I slept for so long but still, my body felt tired. He moved to the side of the bed and started examining my ribs. He poked and prodded me, causing me some pain in the process and I tried to remain as still as possible so he could do his work.
“How is the pain now?” He poked me again and I had to bite down on my lips to keep myself from screaming.
“I am a little bit better.” I was lying, I still felt much pain but I wanted to brave through the pain. My wolf needed to start healing me on her own and stop replying to medications. She had been so detached from me since our arrival to this Pack. A part of me believes that she was being like this because of Bernard.
“I don’t understand why your wolf isn’t taking over your healing. You are healing like a human right now.” Liam said as he wasn’t convinced.
I knew why my wolf wasn’t healing me, she was yearning for Bernard and she retreated back because of my choice. She didn’t like the decision I was making for the both of us but I was trying to keep us alive.
Neither Bernard or I made a move to strengthen our mate bond. He didn’t recognize me as his mate or at least, I didn’t think he had and I was in no rush to claim him. If I were to claim him as mine, it would mean that I would be tethered to him and thereby forced to stay in his land. Richard was on the hunt for me and there was no telling what he was planning. The longer I stay here, the more danger I am putting myself in.
“I am going to give you some more pain killer and then I will send you to do x-ray so I can take a closer look at those ribs and see if there is anything that I missed.” He said to me and I nodded my head releasing the breath I had been holding. He pulled down my gown and placed the sheet to cover my body. I sunk into the pillow and closed my eyes once more.
“I will be right back, Elena. You just get some rest.” I heard him open and close the door, leaving me alone. The darkness carried me slowly as I began to drift into a dreamless sleep.
The sound of muffled screams pierced through the thick haze of sleep I was under. I couldn’t tell how far away the voices were, all I knew was that they were not in my room.
“I don’t care what you say, Liam. I Am doing as I was ordered to do. Now, move before I make you move.” That voice, I only heard it once yesterday but I already associated with it’s danger. Nicholas is here and he is close.
My eyes opened quickly and I was instantly on high alert. If Nicholas is here, it means that he is here for me. After our last encounter, he was the last person I wanted to see right now. He is a cruel man with little to no respect for anyone below his rank.
