Chapter 75
"YOU LOOKED HAPPY," Portia observed Helga with a curious eye as she happily poured herself a cup of tea. "Was your date with His Majesty that enjoyable?"
"Yeah," Helga nodded eagerly, her smile widening, and her cheeks flushed with a rosy hue as she remembered the joy that filled her heart when Siegren confessed his love for her. The memory still felt like a beautiful dream, one that she never wanted to wake up from. After they returned to the palace, every moment was filled with happiness and love. She feared that it was all too good to be true, that it was all just a figment of her imagination. But as she opened her eyes this morning, greeted by Siegren's sweet morning kiss and declarations of love, she knew it was all real.
"Did something happen?" the beta female asked, somehow the vibe coming from the Queen was totally different from how she acted during the hunting competition yesterday. She was happy for her, though, as this was the first time she had seen her so cheerful.
"Well, uhm." Helga pursed her lips in an attempt to contain her bright smile, but it was a losing battle. She couldn't help but radiate with happiness and joy, so intense that she had never experienced anything like it in her entire existence. Despite having been confessed to and told 'I love you' before, this time felt completely different. It was unlike any other confession or declaration of love she had ever received, and she couldn't quite put her finger on what made it stand out. All she knew was that, at that moment, everything felt right and perfect. "Did His Majesty confess to you?" Portia tried to contain her curiosity, but the Queen's flushed cheeks gave away the answer. After all, Portia had been in a similar situation herself when David confessed his love for her. Helga's eyes widened and her blush deepened as she was flooded with memories from the night before. She could still hear his tender voice, see his teary eyes and trembling hands, and feel the spark between them as they watched the fireworks. It was a moment that would stay etched in her mind forever.
"You're right," she exclaimed, covering her cheeks with her palms, "How did you figure it out? Wait, you're aware of Siegren's feelings towards me?"
Portia lifted her teacup to take a sip, but then she stopped and turned to Helga with a forced smile tugging on her lips, "I-I am, but I promised to the Alpha King to keep it secret. I only found out about it because David let it slip by accident."
"When did you learn about his feelings for me?" Helga asked, her interest piqued.
“After the full moon, when the Alpha King summoned me to ask about your well-being,” Portia explained, her heart fluttering knowing that the Alpha King had bravely confessed his feelings for Helga, despite making it clear that he wouldn't let her know about his genuine liking for her without the influence of their mate bond. "Your reaction shows that you are happy with his confession. Does that mean your feelings for him were mutual?"
A warm smile spread across Helga's face, and she couldn't help but nod with giddy happiness, causing the butterflies in her stomach to flutter uncontrollably. It was a feeling she thought she would never experience again after the heartbreak of her last relationship. But here she was, surprised by the absence of anxiety and fear as she embraced this new love. It felt like
falling in love for the very first time, all over again. The weight she had carried from past relationship lifted off her shoulders, leaving behind only pure joy and hope for the future. "We confessed to each other during the fireworks, it was so romantic," she said, lost in a daze, and Portia couldn't help but smile. She was truly happy for her friend and the Alpha King; not only was it a rare occurrence for the King to fall in love with his chosen mate, but because they both deserved happiness.
"Congratulations,” Portia extended her hand and gave the Queen a gentle squeeze. "May your relationship continue to grow stronger and healthier."
"Thank y-" Hegla's words were cut off as a loud commotion interrupted them. They both looked towards the source of the noise, their expressions turning into deep frowns They then exchanged glances before pushing their chairs back and standing up.
"What could possibly be happening?" Portia asked as they walked towards the gate. To their surprise, they ran into the Alpha King and David, who seemed to be heading in the same direction. Helga's heart raced as she made eye contact with her mate, causing her cheeks to flush. Siegren also felt flustered at the sight of her, leading their Beta to give them curious looks, questioning why they were acting as if they had never seen each other before.
"W-What's happening?" Helga stammered, feeling shy.
"T-The guards told me that Silver Pack's Alpha and Beta were demanding to see me,"
Siegren stumbled over his words and cleared his throat, looking embarrassed. David couldn't help but stare at his friend's odd behavior-he knew Siegren was in love, but why was he acting so foolishly? Meanwhile, Helga bit her lip, trying not to laugh, and decided not to inquire further, as it was quite obvious why the Alpha and Beta of Silver Pack had come to the palace; they must have heard the news about Miranda.
"What about your teatime? Were you guys done?" Siegren asked, composing himself.
"No, not yet... The commotion had me worried, so Portia and I decided to check what was causing it."
"That means those bastards interrupted your relaxation time?" Siegren let out a low growl under his breath, causing Helga and the Betas to look at him with confused expressions. He sure wasn't acting like himself today, they all thought.
"T-that's what make you angry?" David's words caught in his throat as he was taken aback by Siegren's sudden aggression. Earlier, in the study, everything had been fine between them with the Alpha King seeking love advice. He even showed no signs of frustration about whoever was causing a ruckus in the palace because he had known it was bound to happen. But now, after hearing that Helga's teatime had been interrupted, his anger seemed to grow exponentially. David couldn't help but feel sorry for the Silver Pack's Alpha and Beta, as he knew they were likely about to face Siegren's wrath.
"It's fine, why are you getting angry over something like that?" Helga responded quickly, trying to diffuse the anger that Siegren was clearly feeling.
"Why wouldn't I be angry? It's been a long time since you've had a moment to yourself, and those bastards have to come and ruin it,” he spat out, his footsteps growing heavier with each stride. David let out a heavy sigh and turned to look at his mate, silently instructing her to take the Queen back to the Pavilion and continue their peaceful teatime. Portia immediately complied, leading the Queen away with gentle words and a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
Helga was torn between staying, not wanting to waste the tea that was already served, and worrying about what Siegren might do in his anger. However, when she saw the determined look in David's eyes, she knew he would handle the situation with the Alpha King. She just nodded in agreement, realizing it was best for her not to get involved. With one last look at her mate, Helga followed Portia away from the tense scene unfolding before them.
"Oh right, I saw a few maids and the butler searching through the trashcans earlier. It seems they were trying to find something; do you happen to know what it is?" Helga asked, sipping her tea and noticing the commotion seemed to have died down. She assumed that David managed to calm Siegren and was now successfully handling the visitors.
"Hmm, from what I heard, it was a piece of paper that the butler found during the last full moon. It had the handwriting of the previous Queen, and the Alpha King was informed about it. However, due to the curse acting up that night, His Majesty crumpled the paper without realizing it. The next day, the maids threw it away thinking it was trash," Portia explained, shrugging her shoulder, "Unfortunately, the Alpha King only remembered the existence of the paper this morning, making it nearly impossible to retrieve it now. It's most likely either buried in the dumpsite or completely gone."
"I wonder what was written on the paper," Helga wondered, gently setting her cup down on the table and gazing up at the sky as the wind picked up. She prayed that the note would be discovered; not only was it from Siegren's late mother, but it could hold something valuable.
But little did she know that this seemingly innocent piece of paper held the potential to shatter the contentment and happiness she currently felt.
