Chapter 72
AS SOON AS STELLA entered the tent, Helga took over and transformed back into her human form. Siegren then took off his cape and gently placed it around her shoulders to cover her naked body, his hands trembling as they rested on the fabric for a moment before he pulled her into a tight embrace. When he saw her wolf, he knew it was Helga, and seeing that she was hurt nearly drove him to madness. Fortunately, he managed to regain control and calm himself down quickly.
"Are you alright?" he asked as he gently released her from the hug and placed his hands on her cheeks, concern etched on his face. He knew the hunting competition was dangerous, yet he had not taken the necessary precautions to keep Helga safe. This realization weighed heavy on him, and he couldn't bear the thought of something happening to her. If she were seriously hurt, he didn't know what he would do. He might lose control and lash out at everyone in sight.
"I'm okay, but we have to send out the royal guard immediately. We need to capture Miranda before she can escape." Helga gasped for breath, her hand tightly gripping her injured ankle as she recounted the events that had just unfolded. Siegren nodded in understanding and quickly used mind link to command the royal guards to capture Miranda alive. He then summoned Portia to tend to the Queen's wounds and help her change into a new dress. As Portia worked, Helga explained in detail what exactly had happened inside the forest. Siegren's usually calm demeanor was replaced by an intense fury, his piercing red eyes glinting with anger. His powerful Alpha aura filled the small space, causing the two she-wolves to shudder in its presence.
Helga flinched as she felt the anger seething inside Siegren and knew she had to diffuse the situation quickly before it got out of hand.
"I'm fine, so please calm down," she reassured him, and the Alpha King just clenched his jaw. He was doing his best to control his rage and resist the urge to enter the forest and kill the wench who had hurt his mate. But a gut feeling told him to stay put for now. Before he could respond, Lucian's voice boomed from outside the tent, accompanied by the growing noise of the crowd.
"We've already captured the Luna of Incarnadine, Your Majesties."
"Wait, what's going on?" Confused and concerned, Ezra quickly hurried over to the two royal guards who had a tight grip on his mate's arm. However, Gamma Lucian intervened and grabbed him by the shoulders, preventing him from getting any closer.
"She attempted to harm the Queen," the gamma announced, causing a collective gasp from everyone. Miranda clenched her jaw in frustration, this was not part of her plan. She had thought she could easily achieve her goal by manipulating Helga into transforming into her wolf form with the help of the child she had deceived. But it seemed she had underestimated Helga's wolf, which turned out to be much stronger than she had initially thought. It all went wrong because of her miscalculations.
"We were in the hunting grounds! I had no idea it was the Queen because I had never seen her wolf before. All I've done was go after a rare catch-"
"Shut your fucking mouth." The venomous words spat from the Alpha King's mouth, causing Miranda to flinch and fall silent. His voice was filled with a menacing undertone that sent shivers down her spine. She could feel the familiar sensation creeping up on her, like an unseen force trying to take control of her body. It started in the pit of her stomach and spread through her limbs, making them tremble uncontrollably. But she refused to succumb to it, determined to finish what she had started. With trembling hands and a defiant gaze, she locked eyes with the Alpha King, his red irises burning into hers like fire.
"You can't just capture my mate like this! Even if she did something against the Queen, we all knew they were in the Hunting grounds where there are no specific rules-"
"Did I give you permission to yap?" Siegren interrupted Ezra's sentence, causing him to close his hand tightly. The gathering of people whispered among themselves, sharing their various opinions and speculations. They were all afraid because they could sense the intense aura of the Alpha King, even though it wasn't directed at them. However, they could also empathize with his reaction, after all, his beloved Queen had been injured.
"It's true that we were in the Hunting grounds, so my injury is not the main concern here." Helga chimed in as she stepped forward, her limp evident as she made her way towards Miranda while glaring. "But bringing in innocent children and inviting rogues just to lure me out was crossing a line."
"I am still confused by your accusation; as I mentioned before, I was simply out hunting and just so happened to come across a red wolf-"
"She's lying!" Elias sprinted towards Helga, grasping at her dress and pulling it gently. Tears welled up in his eyes as he mustered the courage to speak the truth. He couldn't bear the thought of the Queen getting hurt because of him, so he stood firm to protect her reputation. “Alpha King, that woman promised to give me money if I ran an errand for her. She asked me to go into the forest and gather some flowers..."
"At first, I refused because my mother warned me that it wasn't safe for humans to enter the forest... B-but when she told me that she was the Queen's twin sister and she would give her the flower, I trusted her and agreed to complete the task for her." Elias' voice shook with fear as he stood in front of the intimidating group of adults and werewolves, not to mention the Queen and King. Despite his nerves, he bravely defended Helga. "That fake promised she would stay close by, but then a frightening wolf with a scar over its eye appeared out of nowhere... If it weren't for the Queen's intervention, I might have been its prey."
Tears erupted from Elias, unstoppable and overwhelming. He had tried to remain stoic and unshaken, but the fear and danger he had faced finally caught up with him, causing him to break down completely. The crowd watched, empathizing with his pain and believing every word he spoke. Helga couldn't help but kneel in front of him, gently embracing him and rubbing his back in a comforting gesture.
"Don't worry, Elias. You're safe now. Thank you for sharing with us what happened and why you were there," she said, her voice laced with concern and kindness, Elias nodded and buried his head into her shoulder, feeling safe and protected again. "You handled everything well.”
Siegren and Helga shared a meaningful glance before she stood up and instructed Portia to take Elias somewhere quiet where he could calm down. With Elias gone, Helga's anger
towards Miranda intensified, her gaze fixated on the necklace around her neck. She could feel her rage bubbling inside of her, so much so that she feared losing control and transforming. But with Stella already using her powers twice in one day, she knew it would be too draining for her to shift even if she wanted to.
"Just how low will you stoop, Miranda?! How low can you get?!" She exclaimed angrily, her emerald eyes glowing in anger. She wanted to control her emotions as they were in front of a crowd and currently doing an important event, but her patience was running dangerously thin. For someone who endured everything and kept all the emotions bottled up inside her, it was difficult for her to contain such intense rage. "Answer me! What if that child dies because of you? And why are you so determined to get rid of me in the first place?"
The tension in the air was intense, making everyone shudder. The wind blew harshly, as if a storm was brewing, and the trees rustled in response. It was as though nature itself was feeling Helga's anger as everyone held their breath, even Siegren couldn't help but feel his heart race at the sudden outburst of his mate. This intense emotion was new to him, something he had never witnessed or experienced until this moment.
"Your Majesty, calm down... Let's talk about this matter privat—”
"No!" Helga cut Ezra's sentence off as she glared at him, causing him to flinch under her sharp gaze. He had already seen her angry before but not to this extent and for some reason, even though he was an Alpha, he found himself intimidated by Helga. "Since representatives from every pack in Verdentia were present, it would be easier to spread the truth about the Luna of Incarnadine."
“Truth? What truth?" Whispers and murmurs echoed throughout the crowd, leaving a mix of confusion and curiosity on their faces as they exchanged wary looks. Miranda furrowed her brow, her heart racing with fear of impending doom. She had a sense that something was about to happen that would undo all of her previous hard work and efforts. Her gaze then shifted to Helga anxiously, and the sight of her piercing green gaze made her entire body shudder involuntarily.
Suddenly, a warning flashed through her mind, which she wished she shouldn't have foolishly dismissed... Now it was too late.
