Chapter 51
Chapter 51 Knowing the Truth
Hearing Chandler’s question, Caleb caught himself and strode stiffly into the office. He saw the man’s handsome face and felt jealous for the first time.
He acted calm as he neared Chandler’s desk and placed the document on it.
Choking down his rage, he didn’t know he was angry at Chandler for treating Erin so or at her for acting like a whore.
Chandler pretended to look at the document and asked with feigned concern, “What’s the matter? You don’t look good. Were you embarrassed by what you saw just now?”
Caleb tried to hide his emotions. “I’m only Erin’s boss in the design department, not her boyfriend or husband. What rights do I have to be upset?” he thought.
He answered coldly. “Thanks for your concern, but I’m fine.”
“Caleb, I know you’re conservative when it comes to relationships, so I won’t impose my views on you. What happened just now was my mistake. I indulge Erin too much, and she keeps coming here to keep me company. Even though I’ve let her join Frost Corporation, she still insists on becoming my secret lover…”
“Secret lover…” Caleb repeated inwardly.
He paled. He had never imagined Erin to be such a woman!
“Mr. Frost, you don’t have to tell me your private affairs. If you don’t need me for anything else, I should get back to work.” He didn’t want to hear about it anymore.
Caleb couldn’t help but despise himself for wanting to pursue a woman like Erin.
Chandler looked at his cousin and felt avenged. Whoever desired his woman, he was determined to make them feel miserable.
“Okay, leave the document here, and I’ll read it later,” Chandler said nonchalantly.
Caleb nodded. “Alright, I’ll head out then.”
Staring after Caleb as he left. Chandler said, “Oh, yes, I’ve decided to transfer Erin to my office. I know she works in your department, but she joined Frost Corporation for my sake, and this will save her the trouble of going to and fro between two
places. You don’t have any objections, do you?”
Caleb clenched his fists and gritted his teeth. After a few seconds, he tried to sound casual as he said, “I’ll leave it up to you.”
Caleb couldn’t even remember how he left the president’s office. He only knew he didn’t want to return to the design
department or stay in the company!
Driving his car, Caleb left the building, but not long afterward, he saw the woman he didn’t wish to see the most–Erin, the
woman who had once again rejected him at the restaurant.
Suddenly, Caleb’s pent–up emotions erupted.
Swiftly pulling his car over by the curb, he pulled out his car key, unbuckled his seatbelt, then angrily strode over to her.
After running out of her workplace, Erin walked on the street in a daze and almost got hit by a car just now. Her eyes were swollen from crying.
She looked miserable–even though she had no makeup on, she seemed to have suffered a huge blow with her face wet with
tears.
The moment Erin looked up. Caleb’s anger largely went away even though he couldn’t accept what he had seen in the office.
“But what do her tears mean?” he wondered.
Thinking of what Chandler said to him, Caleb asked, “Erin, are you truly Chandler’s secret lover?”
Erin didn’t speak. Lowering her gaze as she shed tears, she wanted to ignore him–coincidentally, he was the person she didn’t want to see the most at that moment.
“He saw me when I was being humiliated!” she thought.
Erin felt ashamed, wondering how she could face him ever again.
Seeing her walking ahead with a look of despair, Caleb pulled her arm and led her toward a flowerbed by the roadside.
He brought her to an obscure corner and was surprised Erin didn’t resist him. After letting her go, Caleb choked down his anger
and said, “I want an answer!”
Erin looked at him with bloodshot eyes and let out a self–loathing smile. “You saw, didn’t you? Do you think I’m not humiliated
enough?”
She wept uncontrollably. However, her expression was not that of grief but resignation and world–weariness. It was as if she
had aged several years in a brief moment.
Caleb saw her look and felt bad for her, as if his heart was stabbed by an ice pick. Thinking that it might not be what he had
imagined, he started to calm himself down and tried his best to think about what happened.
“I know you don’t wish to see me, and truth be told, I don’t know how to face you either. However, I feel bad seeing you like this. Do you have your reasons?” Caleb took out a gray handkerchief from his pocket and gave it to her. “Dry your tears first.”
Shedding her tears, Erin chuckled wryly, “What reasons could I have? I guess I was born a fucking whore-”
Before she could finish, Caleb held her tight. “Just cry if you feel wronged! Don’t keep it inside. I won’t ask you to explain again
before you’re ready. I’m sorry…”
Hearing his apology, Erin broke into sobs. She knew Caleb didn’t need to apologize to her as he did nothing wrong. And yet he kept her company and tried to console her. It made Erin feel that she was no longer alone. She was further moved that Caleb was willing to hold her.
Erin cried hysterically, and Caleb grew convinced of his speculation that she was wronged.
“Chandler sent me the text to bring the document upstairs so I would catch them in the act. He did it on purpose!” he thought.
Caleb angrily remembered the slap mark he saw on Erin’s face the last time.
After ten minutes, Erin started to reel due to exhaustion, and Caleb swiftly wrapped his arms around her waist. He helped her to a bench. It was a small garden without a soul, and the obscure spot was suitable for them to talk.
Erin took his handkerchief and wiped her tears, trying hard to pull herself together. Caleb patiently kept her company without a
word.
After another ten minutes, Erin lowered her head and said, “Do you truly want to know what’s going on between me and
Chandler?”
Caleb looked like he had mixed feelings. He wanted to know but was scared to find out from her that she truly liked Chandler.
However, he knitted his brow and said, “I do.”
“Can you swear not to tell anyone?”
Caleb was taken aback. Actually, even without her asking, he wouldn’t dare to tell anyone as it involved Chandler. “I swear I won’t tell anyone.”
Erin remained quiet for a moment, then told him how she met Chandler and what happened after that.
Half an hour later, Caleb was infuriated!
Breathing erratically, he furrowed his brow as he said, “That cousin of mine is too much!”
