Chapter 3:

Chapter 5

The closer she went toward them, the more intense the pain in her heart was. At that instant, she knew her gut feeling was right. That was her son.

He was her flesh and blood.

“Liule mute’s bleeding! He’s bleeding. Let’s runt”

The two boys wanted to run after committing such a bad thing, but Caroline stood in their way and scolded, “Stop right

there!”

The boys were stunned as they looked at Caroline with shock. Still, one of them held his chin high and said arrogantly. “Who are you? Why are you stopping us?”

“Who said you could bully him?” asked Caroline as she pointed to the boy on the ground.

“We didn’t!” The boys refused to admit it.

“How can you deny it when I saw it with my own eyes? Look at him. The dirt on his face and body and the bleeding nose. Didn’t you do that?”

Caroline grabbed onto the two chubby kids’ ears and forced them to look at the boy on the ground.

Meanwhile, Leon got up from the ground. He looked up at the strange woman in front of him with curiosity.

He had forgotten about his anger and misery with her sudden appearance.

At the same time, the two chubby kids cried out in pain while Caroline scolded, “Apologies to him! Do you hear me?”

The chubby kid broke loose from Caroline’s hold and refused to apologize. “I’m not going to. What can you do about it?”

“Yeah. Who are you? Mind your own business!” added the other kid.

Caroline was furious at how the two chubby kids were arrogant even though they were in the wrong. Exasperated, she raised

her hand at them.

The kids were stunned as they had never gotten treated that way, no matter how much they misbehaved. They burst out in tears the very next second.

“Stop crying. Do you hear that? I’m asking you two to apologize to him. Otherwise, I’ll really hit you two this time.”

Under Caroline’s threat, the chubby kids had no choice but to apologize to the little boy. “We’re sorry…

At that instant, Leon blinked as his eyes rounded with awe and curiosity.

He wondered who that woman was and why she helped him.

The chubby kids tried to run again, but Caroline grabbed their collars and warned them, “Listen to me. You two will not bully him anymore from here on. Also, he’s not motherless. I won’t go easy on anyone that says he’s a mute and a bastard!”

The two chubby kids were so stunned that they did not utter a word. It was not until Caroline finally let them go that they burst out in tears and ran away.

Caroline then turned to the little boy. Her eyes reddened immediately, and her heart ached.

She thought, “He’s my son! He’s almost five, yet he had never got to experience a mother’s love in his life.”

A wave of sadness came across her at that thought.

It was true that a motherless child was the most pitiful of all.

After all, even though Leon got raised in a prestigious family, there was no guarantee that he would be safe from bullying. Not to mention how his father, Quintin, could not protect him right now.

Now that Caroline had finally found her son, she had no idea how to tell the boy that she was his mother. She worried it would scare him off. Thus, she did not tell him that right away.

Instead, she squatted and suppressed her tears as she asked, “You’re Leon Ziegler, aren’t you? Are you hurt? Can I wipe the mud off you?”

She then pulled out a napkin to clean the blood off his nose, but the little boy frowned. He smacked her hands cold gaze, refusing her touch.

Then, he wiped it with his sleeve and held his head high as he looked back at her with a stubborn gaze, telling her that he was a man and a little shed of blood was nothing to him.

His solidity at such a young age was a heart-wrenching sight.

At the sight of that, Caroline’s heart ached like never before. Tears welled up as she complimented, “Leo, you were so brave just now. You’re awesome. I admire you so much.

She even raised her thumb at him. However, Leon ignored her compliments and gave her a cold glare before walking away,

Leon was a reclusive person, and he disliked socializing with other people. He knew Caroline had helped him, but he still did not want to get involved with her.

In mere minutes since they reunited, Caroline realized that her son was an aloof and distant boy. She could not help but agree with how similar he was to his father.

Even so, she did not give up and went after him. “Leo, I came here to find you. Don’t you want to know who I am?”

Leon tilted his head and stared at her for a second. Then, he quickened his pace to get away from her as though she were a kidnapper.

Staring at his stubbornly retreating figure, Caroline felt a little helpless as she shouted, “Leo, does everybody call you a b d?”

Leon stopped in his tracks at those words. When he turned around, his face contorted with rage.

It seemed that Caroline’s words had upset him.

Like a little angry beast, Leon charged at Caroline and rammed into her leg with his head.

If Leon could speak, he would tell her how he hated it the most when people called him a motherless child.

“I am not a b d!” he thought.

Caroline took a few steps backward after getting shoved. Then, she held onto his wrist when she finally regained her balance and said. “I don’t mean it. I only wanted to tell you that you’re no b d. You have a mother.”

“Hmph.”

Leon scoffed and glared at her. He felt she was stating the obvious as he knew he had a mother. The only problem was that he had no idea where she was.

“I’m your mother, and you’re my son. I’m back. I’ll protect you from here on, okay?”

Leon was stunned by Caroline’s words. He stared at her with his glistening eyes as though he was trying to figure her out. He could not believe that she was really his mother.

Leon’s eyes blinked with suspicion as he looked at her from head to toe again and again. His expression went from surprised. to suspicion to sadness and finally anger.

He thought of how he was bullied constantly by his elder cousins because he did not have a mother. Besides that, he also got mocked by his classmates, and the adults would say that he was an adopted child. Some even gossiped about how his mother had abandoned him.

He hated that his mother had deserted him.

At the same time, he also longed to have a mother. He would wish for his birth mother to return and look for him. night.

Yet, he could not believe it now when a beautiful woman showed up and told him she was his mother.

Leon, who had never cried, suddenly began tearing up. He abruptly pushed Caroline aside and ran away while crying.

“Leo! Leo…”

Caroline quickly went after him. It took a while before she found him in an artificial cave in the garden.

Leon was all curled up in that tiny cave with his knees held against his chest. He refused to come out of it even though his tears combined with the blood from his nose, leaking all over his face.

At the sight of that, Caroline became even more heartbroken. She could not believe that her son would act like a s ky porcupine to protect himself in front of other people. It pained her to see Leon hide away like a little wounded animal.

She eventually spoke up. “Leo, I’m sorry. I should’ve come back sooner. Trust that I had my reasons for leaving you with your dad back then. I never abandoned you. Leo, I genuinely missed you and dreamt of you a lot over the years. There isn’t a day where I didn’t think of you, my baby boy. I came back this time to find you, and I promise I’ll never leave again. Leo, my baby. Come to me, okay?”

Tears rolled down her cheeks as she gazed at the pitiful child, hoping that he would come out of the cave.
