Chapter 18
Chapter 18
“The Ziegler family is a reigning aristocratic family being affluent and influential. Of course, I can get a lot from marrying him. If Mr. Ziegler gets better, I would definitely get a big reward from Mrs. Ziegler. Why would I say no to such a huge temptation?”
Caroline would never tell a soul her true motive. She intentionally described herself as a shallow woman who only had her eyes on the assets so that no one would suspect her.
Quintin could hear Caroline and Benjamin’s conversation clearly through the door gap.
Caroline’s answer solidified Quintin’s doubt and disappointment.
In fact, he could tell that the woman had an ulterior motive early on.
He reckoned that an extremely materialistic woman like Caroline was evidently approaching him for the Ziegler family’s money and status as his wife.
Meanwhile, Caroline’s explanation did not raise Benjamin’s suspicion. Smirking mysteriously, the man said, “Then, you’d have to take good care of Quintin. I’ll reward you liberally as long as he’s recovered.”
“Thank you, Mr. Benjamin.”
“As for what happened between Bryan, Kent, and Leo yesterday, I’ve heard that it was my mother and wife who were over defending them. Romilly can be a little carried away at times. I’ll apologize on their behalf. Please don’t take it to heart!”
Benjamin reached out to grab Caroline’s shoulder as he spoke, tightening his grip discreetly.
He stared intensely at her like a hawk watching its prey.
It was the first time they had met. Yet, he ignored proper courtesy and made skin contact with her inappropriately.
“Is this man alluding to something?” Caroline wondered.
She pulled her shoulder away naturally and flashed a light smile. “I understand. I won’t take it to heart!”
Cough! Cough!
Just then. Quintin’s vigorous coughs rang out inside the house. Immediately, Caroline turned away and headed back into the
residence.
She walked to the bed and asked Edward, “Dr. Cook, how’s Mr. Ziegler doing?”
Edward answered. “His manic episode is caused by post–traumatic stress disorder, and it will trigger from time to time. However, his heart and lungs‘ functions have recovered quite well. He’ll be fully recovered if taken care of and given appropriate medicine and therapy.”
Benjamin glanced at Edward before saying, “Thank you, Dr. Cook. Can you prescribe some medicine for Quintin?”
The latter took out two medicine bottles from his medical kit before passing them to Caroline, teaching her about their uses and dosages.
“Got it. Thank you, Dr. Cook. I’ll make sure Mr. Ziegler takes them on time!”
“Ms. Lewis, thank you for taking care of my cousin. I’ll drop by to check on him next time!”
Since Edward had done his job, Benjamin led the man away and bade his farewell.
The duo made their leaves together. After exiting Tanglevine Residence, Benjamin questioned Edward softly, “Why did Quintin regain consciousness all of a sudden?”
“I have no idea either I was wondering why too. Perhaps there was a problem with the medication’s dosage.”
Heaving a sigh, Benjamin asked, “How long does it take for the medicine you gave them today to take effect?”
“Typically, it will take a month.”
“Great!”
A glint of malice flashed across Benjamin’s eyes as he curved a conceited smirk.
Back in the master bedroom, Quintin pulled a cold, long face upon recalling the private conversation between Caroline and Benjamin. What she said had rankled him immensely.
Yet, Caroline failed to notice his consternation, still concentrating on inspecting the two medicine bottles Edward prescribed
earlier.
She took a picture and sent it to her assistant, Riley, requesting his help.
It felt as if the room was empty when Caroline remained silent. Out of the blue, Quintin cried, “I need to use the bathroom!”
“I can hear you. You don’t have to shout. I’m not deafl”
Chapter 18
She lowered the medicines and rose to her feet, asking, “Are you going number one or number two? How do you want to get there? Do you need me to carry you to the bathroom? Or do you prefer to do it on the bed?”
“Scram! Get a man here!”
“Finel”
Caroline yelled out to a male servant to service Quintin.
She stood rigid, intending to watch how the male servant would handle the problem. However, Quintin did not want her to see his private parts. “Caroline Lewis, get out!”
She raised her beautiful brows. “It’s nothing interesting anyway. Fine! I’ll get out!”
Quintin was rendered speechless, seething with rage.
“How dare she say I’m not interesting!” he snarled internally.
It was only after the male servant had left that Caroline returned to the room.
Not long later, Quintin made another request. “I want to drink water!”
With that, she went to pour a glass of water, came back, and served him. To her dismay, he took a sip and deliberately nitpicked her. “It’s too hot!”
Hence, she went to get some cooler water. Nonetheless, the man complained again, “It’s too cold!”
“What’s wrong with you? What’s with those complaints?”
Caroline could tell that he was trying to blow off some steam by venting his anger upon her.
“I want water that’s exactly 98 Fahrenheit! I won’t drink it even if it’s 1 degree higher!”
Quintin advertently made things difficult for her, thinking she would acquiesce with him. Sadly, he got it wrong.
Caroline poured the water into the trash can at the drop of a hat and said, “Don’t drink any, then! I’ll see how you’ll quench your thirst! You’d better bear with it and not try to drink your urine!”
“You damned woman… How dare you abuse me? Believe it or not, I’ll chase you out here and now!”
Quintin was caught off guard by her unforeseen tack.
Not only did she rebuff his order, but she also fought back against him.
“Let me have a good look at who’s trying to chase away my granddaughter–in–law. Who’s going to take care of you if she’s gone? I’ve heard that a snake sneaked into Tanglevine Residence last night. If it weren’t for Caroline, you would have been bitten! However, not only are you ungrateful toward her, but you’re also threatening to kick her out?”
A voice rang out of thin air. It was Catherine. The first thing she heard when she set foot in the room was her grandson bellowing to boot out Caroline.
Following behind Catherine was an attractive woman. She was Quintin’s biological elder sister, Jennifer Ziegler. She, too, could not help but chide, “Quintin, you have to stop acting so petulantly! Otherwise, you’ll never get a wife in this lifetime!”
“Scram!” Quintin did not show any mercy to his sister either. “The first thing she does is curse me, saying that I’ll stay single forever! Is she really my biological sister?” he mused.
“Grandma, listen to him! Serves him right that he’s single for life!” Jennifer could not help but roast. “I can’t believe that there’s a blind lady who fell for him and even gave birth to his child! She must be the unluckiest woman in the world!”
Caroline’s face instantly flushed. She was too embarrassed to admit that she was the unluckiest woman Jennifer had mentioned.
Judging from their argument, she dared say that these two siblings must have been arguing most of the time.
A typical pair of siblings, indeed.
It was then that Caroline regained her senses and brushed off those irrelevant thoughts. She intoned, “Greetings, Mrs. Ziegler. I just wanted to find you and fill you in on the snake incident!”
“Tell me exactly what happened,” Catherine responded.
“That’s right. How could a snake slither in out of nowhere?”
“That was a foreign venomous snake. It wasn’t a local species. I think someone’s scheming to harm Mr. Ziegler.”
Both Catherine and Jennifer were taken aback. Caroline added, “Mrs. Ziegler, first thing first, we have to find out who’s the culprit that’s trying to take Mr. Ziegler’s life!”
“You’re right! We have to find out who it is!”
Without further ado, Catherine summoned the butler, Michael, and instructed, “Go investigate the matter. Don’t overlook
anything suspicions!”

Yes!” Michael acceded.
However, Susan ran in anxiously at this moment and reported. “Ms. Lewis, I just discovered that the snake is gone!”
“It’s gone?”
