Love Blooms In Prenups By Lydia Onions

Chapter 5

Chapter 5

After watching Harrison leave, Maverick headed to the study alone.

As he sat in the office chair, he crossed his slender legs and leaned against the seat. He gently tapped his fingers on the table, looking like he was pondering something.

After some time, Stanley hurried over and paused briefly before saying. “Mr. Rick, we’ve just received news from the Mills family in Yartran. Old Mr. Mills has been unconscious for half a month. It seems like he doesn’t have much time left.”

Maverick’s gaze darkened, making Stanley feel as if the surrounding atmosphere had turned gloomy in an instant.

After a pause. Maverick finally instructed, “Get the plane ready.”

Although Stanley was slightly startled, he quickly returned to his senses. “Okay.”

Three years ago. Maverick made a deal with Geoffrey Mills, his grandfather. Since then, Maverick never stepped into Yartran. Stanley could not help but wonder what others would think now that he wanted to return..

Maverick spun his phone on the table and finally dialed a number after some time.

“Come back. We’re going to Yartran,” he ordered succinctly.

At two in the morning, a private plane stopped at a private runway of Horizon Manor in Yartran.

Dressed in a black trench coat, Maverick got off the plane gracefully, with Harrison and Stanley following behind him.

The entire manor was brightly lit, like a shining jewel in the night.

The Mills family had a strong foundation in Yartran with a history of hundreds of years. They were a powerful force that hid in a secret place on earth, and they had the ability to control the century’s economic lifeline.

They were mysterious and ancient at the same time.

Horizon Manor was a beautiful and exquisite palace building. It had a wide land with over 1000 acres of greenery, including a lake and a river that decorated the place beautifully.

The manor was extremely luxurious, and it was the largest in the whole of Yartran. In fact, it was labeled as a private manor that was prettier than the royal palace.

The courtyard of the main building was crowded with people. They were all members of the Mills family. Even distant relatives were present.

The news about Maverick appearing in Geoffrey’s courtyard with several of his men caused a major change in the atmosphere.

Countless gazes were cast onto Maverick, watching him carefully, as if being wary of a thief.

Geoffrey was critically ill, and the new patriarch had yet to be chosen. Hence, the Mills family was in a complete mess.

Sadly, the distribution of the huge family possession was everyone’s main concern. Only a few people truly cared about Geoffrey’s well–being.

All they cared about was their personal interests. After all, the more people were there to take their share, the fewer benefits they would gain.

Moreover, Geoffrey and Maverick had made a deal with each other, where the latter could not step foot into Yartran. Now that he had appeared in such a situation, many people would naturally start speculating.

Right then, a woman showed up right in front of the trio. “Maverick, you shouldn’t be here!“;

Maverick cast her an icy glare. His eyes were cold, dark, and even had traces of hostility in them.

His gaze left idalia Mills stunned.

“Oh? Who are you to tell me that, Aunt Idalia?” he said curtly.

“That’s right. A daughter who’s married to another family has no right to say such things,” Idalia mused.

She almost choked upon hearing his words. Her face flushed, and her fists were tightly clenched.

Everyone at the scene was gloating over her embarrassing moment.

“Idalia might not be qualified, but I am, right?”

The person who voiced that out was Geoffrey’s second son, Yuvan Mills. At that moment, he was most likely to become the family’s next patriarch.

Instead of getting angry. Maverick laughed and said in an unhurried manner, “You really know how to joke around, Uncle Yuvan. Can’t a grandson return to see his grandfather? Or is it because you’re ready to fill in the spot as a patriarch?”

As soon as those words left Maverick’s lips, Yuvan’s expression darkened.

He took in a deep breath to suppress the anger within him. Staring at Maverick, he said, “Sure, you can see him. But you don’t try to pull any funny tricks.”

In other words, he was telling Maverick to leave right after visiting Geoffrey.

Ignoring him, Maverick brought Harrison into Geoffrey’s room while Stanley stood guard on the outside.

Though everyone in the courtyard was staring at Stanley, he was unbothered by it.

After all, a top international assassin like him would not be easily intimidated by petty situations.

Geoffrey’s room was also crowded with people. They were famous doctors of Yartran who were hired to treat the former’s sickness. However, they were feeling helpless at that moment.

At the same time, the room was filled with the latest equipment and most effective medicines.

When two men suddenly entered the room, Charlotte Mills raised her head to see who the visitors were. Recognizing Maverick, she called out happily, “Maverick! You’re back!”

Maverick hummed in acknowledgment and glanced at Geoffrey, who lay on the bed. The former’s brows furrowed instantly. “How is he?”

Charlotte shook her head. “He’s not looking too good. He’s been unconscious for half a month. During this period, we’ve administered all kinds of treatment, yet there was no response,”

Maverick glanced briefly at Harrison, who took his hands out of his pocket as he approached Geoffrey’s bed.

He was just about to raise his hand to examine the old man when a famous doctor stopped him.

The doctor had not seen Harrison before; he did not know who the latter was. Hence, he looked at Charlotte dubiously.

Charlotte scrutinized Harrison, who gave off the look of a playboy. She furrowed her brows and turned to Maverick, hoping to get an explanation. “Maverick?”

“He’s a doctor.”

Charlotte heard him utter a few simple words. Despite that, she did not dare to stop Harrison openly since Maverick was the one who said so.

Thus, she shot the doctor a look that told him not to be in Harrison’s way.

Without anyone blocking him, Harrison took a few steps forward and eyed the person on the bed.

Shortly after, he only blurted a few words icily, “He’s poisoned”

With that, he sat on the bed to examine Geoffrey’s pupils and pulse.

When Charlotte heard Harrison’s words, her eyes flickered with no one noticing, and they quickly returned to normal.

She was a doctor, too. Naturally, she knew what Harrison was doing.

However, they had done all of that already.

“It’s useless.” Charlotte thought.

She shook her head. When she first heard Maverick saying Harrison was a doctor, she felt a little worried.

However, things were about to change.

Just as she was about to feel disappointed, Harrison said slowly, “It’s a slow–acting poison. It invades the lungs. A simple treatment for stroke symptoms won’t help.”

“Poisoned?” Charlotte repeated inwardly.

After hearing his explanation, one of the elderly men who stood by the side quickly examined Geoffrey again. True enough, the latter was showing symptoms of being poisoned.

He had a sudden revelation. Back then, it did not cross their minds, and all of them kept examining Geoffrey with the idea of the latter having a stroke.

Nothing seemed to work, even though half a month had passed.

After waiting for the elderly man to finish examining Geoffrey, Harrison looked at Charlotte again. “Did the CT scan show any cerebral infarction or hemorrhage?”

Charlotte was confused by his question. “No.”

That was something she was puzzled about, too. Since there were no signs of cerebral infarction and hemorrhage, a simple stroke couldn’t render Geoffrey unconscious for so long.

On top of that, it left all the famous doctors in Yartran at a loss for what to do.

Her answer confirmed Harrison’s suspicion. “I’ll prescribe some medicines first. Let him take it for two consecutive days. We can only start looking into the problem of stroke once the poison is gone.”

The other doctors in the room exchanged solemn glances. Finally, all of them shifted their gaze to Charlotte.

She hesitated for a moment before looking at Maverick. “What do we tell Uncle Yuvan?”

Knitting his brows, Maverick said coldly, “The medicine will be given to you. You’ll feed Grandpa directly.”

Charlotte glanced at the doctors beside her and nodded reluctantly.

“When will Grandpa wake up?” She turned to Harrison.

Though his voice was calm, the words he uttered were shocking, like a stone that was thrown into a pool of stagnant water and caused ripples.

“As long as he takes the medicine I prescribed regularly and gets further treatment after the poison is neutralized, he’ll be able to get off the bed in less than a week,” he stated.

Maverick raised a brow at that.

“Get off the bed?” he mused.
