Lost at Sea

Chapter 27

“Find Jasper, get out of there. Find Jasper, get out of there,” Eleanor murmured under her breath as she watched the inky storm slide over to cover the small ship on the horizon. Her heart was pounding, her muscles were clenched. She was coiled like a spring ready to blow.

As soon as Lizbeth gave the word, Eleanor was the first one into the water. She had always been faster than her sisters, so she poured all her speed into the race against time to rescue him. She made it before they did, but only slightly. The men floated in random clusters in the water, but Eleanor could not see Jasper. In desperation, she did the only thing she could.

“Jasper?” She called loudly. “Jasper!”

“What are you doing?” Lizbeth snarled. Eleanor gasped and whirled. “Who is Jasper?”

Attempting to avoid the conversation, Eleanor dipped below the water. Lizbeth followed, however, catching her tail and yanking her back to face her.

“Who the hell is--” she paused, then smiled. Eleanor felt chills tiptoe their way up her spine. “Ah. So that is the way it must be.”

“No, please--”

“I tried everything to bring you back to us,” Lizbeth growled, waving her hands in front of Eleanor’s face. “Everything! But you chose some-- some boy over us. He is one of them, Eleanor! We saved you, but you turned your back on us.”

“I just wanted to know,” Eleanor sobbed, feebly trying to grab at Lizbeth’s hands. “I had to know who I was before. That man knew me. He was from my past. He was my husband!”

“Listen to yourself,” Lizbeth said sadly, shaking her head. “He’s completely brainwashed you. He probably made all of it up because he knew he could trick you. I don’t want to lose you, sister, so I’ll do the only thing I can. I’m going to find that boy, and I’m going to kill him.”

“No!” Eleanor shouted, but Lizbeth’s hand connected sharply with her face. She spun for a moment, and when she finally righted herself, Lizbeth was heading towards the sinking wreckage of the ship.

“I won’t let you hurt him,” she whispered fiercely, then followed in close pursuit.
