Chapter Bonus Chapter #1 - Test Drive
It was the third week of November and it was a busy one, like every other week. I now work at the city hospital but during holidays or whenever I’m free, I like to help out in the infirmary at mine and Kaden’s pack.
I’m currently walking into the hospital, taking the coffee cup from Josefine with a grateful smile. She chuckles lightly before falling into step with me. Josefine Hofmann was the first person I met when I started at this hospital and we clicked instantly. She’s now a very close friend of mine and has also met Maddox, Eva and Kaden.
We make our way into a room on the second floor where we start with a report of any new information on discharges and admissions, then move onto any patients whose conditions have worsened overnight. After being assigned our areas, we take note of the count of medications before medically evaluating patients and their vitals.
I spend most of my morning administering medication, changing dressings and documenting care in every patient’s records. During this, I also educate any family members around on how to manage their loved one’s condition, including special diet plans and home care after treatment.
After that, I take a break with a few of my friends in the canteen. Josefine and I met people from different departments who have roughly the same working hours as us at times.
The second half of my day involves working with trainees on how to provide hands on care for patients. There are around thirty in my group, which I teach alongside Alaric, a nurse who had joined three years before I did. Josefine nudges me before winking, giggling as she walks away.
I shake my head in amusement. Although she knew that I’m dating Kaden, she still tries to make me admit that our colleague has potential. I laugh it off everytime because she doesn’t know exactly how serious Kaden and I are, and that I would never leave him.
I step into the large room, smiling back at Alaric who waves once he notices me. He’s tall with tousled brown hair and sparkling blue eyes, a muscled physique that has the young female trainees swooning over. Alaric is a handsome and charming man, I’ll give him that. But, he’s nothing compared to Kaden.
We start the session and soon we’re jumping right into the practical exercises we had discussed last week. The hours fly by and I find myself feeling relieved when I’m told I can go. Usually I’m kept here quite late but Wednesdays were the good days where I was let off early.
Alaric and I walk out together, laughing at the dad joke he had just told me. I shake my head as he argues how funny it was, accepting the hug he gives me before waving as we walk off in opposite directions. But then, I see him.
Kaden.
He’s leaning against his car looking like the definition of dangerous with his black leather jacket and combat boots. His midnight hair is tousled sexily as always and the way he stands there with his arms crossed against his chest makes him look intimidating. His form, however, is tense no matter how much he looks at ease just waiting there. His eyes are narrowed and I’m almost certain that he’s looking at me.
I can hear the low murmurings of people passing by as I slowly walk towards him. His eyes are burning with something dark that makes me shiver slightly. Fixated on my figure, he watches me like a hawk as I come to a stop before him.
“Hey.” I smile, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear.
“Who was that guy?” Kaden grunts, his arms still crossed.
“Oh! Alaric teaches the trainees with me.”
“Alright.” He nods tersely, making me smile. “And why did he feel the need to hug you?”
The smile slips right off my lips as I sigh, knowing his possessive streak is at an all-time high right now because of the upcoming full moon. “It was just a friendly hug, Kaden.”
“I’ll show him what a friendly hug is.” He growls under his breath, glaring in the direction Alaric left.
“Kaden...” I whine, tugging the hem of his shirt. “I’m tired and hungry, can we please go?”
He nods before pushing away from the car, standing in front of me. I look up at him, wondering why he’s so quiet. He takes my hand and I almost sigh in content of the warmth that spreads on my skin. Opening the passenger door, he gestures for me to get in.
I thank him as I lower myself onto the seat and strap myself in before he shuts the door gently. Letting out a long breath, I place my bag beside my feet before resting my back against the seat whilst watching him walk around the car and get in.
The engine starts with a familiar growl and soon we are driving towards away from the large hospital. It was only when Kaden veers off onto another road that I perk up in my seat in confusion.
“Where are we going?” I ask, watching a smirk play on his lips.
As he slows the car to a stop at the traffic lights, he turns to me and finally smiles. I grin back when I see his eyes twinkle in mischief, happy that he has cheered up. A sigh escapes him and he turns back to the wheel, gripping the steering wheel tight.
“It’s a surprise.”
“Get in the car.”
“No thank you.”
“Luna, I’m telling you it’ll be fine. Get in the car.”
“No way! Nuh uh, nope, no thank you!” I stood there with my arms crossed while Kaden leans against the hood of his black Mustang.
Let me fill you in. Kaden has dragged me away 30 minutes outside the city to a deserted place because he wanted to teach me how to drive. I had made the decision to pick up driving again but because of my busy schedule, I found it hard to make time for it.
A long strip of rough land stretched out for miles ahead of us, which I found okay until Kaden told me that we’re at the starting point of a racing track. Yes, an illegal racing track.
“What are you even afraid of?” He chuckles, crossing his arms which only serve to be a distraction.
I stare at him for a good minute before exploding into my usual rambling. “Um...crashing and ending up in a hospital?! Did you even hear me when I said I haven’t driven in three years? Forget that, have you seen the beast of a car you drive?!”
He only smirks in reply before lunging forward. I shriek as he grabs my arm and tries to drag me towards the car. No matter how much I protest and fight, he’s ten times stronger than me.
“Please Kaden, can’t I learn on a small car? Don’t make me do this!” I cry out, digging my feet into the dirt which proves to be useless.
“I’m right here, you don’t have to worry about a thing.” He laughs, enjoying my panic way too much.
He gets into the driver’s seat first with his hand still grasping mine in a firm grip so I can’t run off even if I tried. It takes him a while to convince me and I bet if this was a public road, others would be staring at us as if we’re aliens with two heads.
He pushes his seat back slightly before his arm wraps around my waist, guiding me to sit between his legs. It’s slightly uncomfortable but, I manage. Once I’m in, he shuts the door making me wince before I shakily hold the wheel. I take a deep breath and close my eyes briefly, opening them when he starts the engine making me panic.
“Okay so this is the gear shift...and your feet should be this way...” He mutters to himself, adjusting my legs so that my foot rests on the right pedal. “Perfect and - are you praying?!”
“And you aren’t?!” I snap, twisting slightly so that I can glare at him.
His laughter booms in the confines of the car, rich and husky. I cross my arms and pout, angry that he isn’t taking a situation like this as seriously as me. I can feel his torso shake against my body as his arms wrap around my waist tightly in an embrace. God, is he trying to kill me?! I bite my lip, trying not to react to his touch. It’s not fair how much of a hold he has over me.
Regardless of my panicked state, I accelerate slowly and the car smoothly moves forward. With my two hands on the steering wheel, I drive the car on the rough dirt road and everything is fine...until Kaden decides to step in.
“Go faster than 20 miles per hour Luna. We’re not freaking turtles!” He huffs from behind me making me grumble under my breath.
I accelerate until we’re driving at a reasonable speed which seems to satisfy Kaden...to an extent. When we reach the end of the straight road, I begin to make a U turn but slam on the brakes when a motorbike speeds past.
“Oh my God, I nearly hit him. I’m pulling over!” I cry out, gripping the steering wheel as if my life depends on it and watching the motorbike become smaller and smaller the more distance it puts between us.
“We’re literally on a deserted road, not even going 40 miles per hour Luna. I’m pretty sure he would have survived.” He deadpans, sweeping my hair to one side and resting his chin on my shoulder.
“No, what if I -”
“Stop panicking and just drive Luna, it’s okay.” He murmurs gently, rubbing his hands up and down my arms to somehow calm me.
Hesitantly, I nod before resuming to drive at the same speed. The long road is now free of any other users and I feel my confidence build up the more I continue down the track. By the end of the strip I’m practically grinning as I make another U turn.
“I did it! Kaden look!” I squeal in excitement before a joyful laugh escapes my lips.
“I’m so proud of you, sweetheart!” He grins happily, suddenly placing a gentle kiss on my cheek.
I grin at the sparks and tingles that dance on my skin in delight. I glance up at him quickly, taking in his darkened eyes that are heavy with restrained desire. Feeling the heat rise to my cheeks, I smile up at him before turning around so that he can’t see how much he affects me. I hear him clear his throat behind me before his chest presses against my back as he leans forward to steer us back onto the center of the strip again.
“Alright, let’s try going faster.” He grunts, gently pushing my foot to the side so that he can accelerate.
“Wait - what?! No! What’s wrong with the speed we’re going at?” I cry, gripping his wrist as he reaches 55 miles per hour.
“I’m not an 85-year-old Luna and neither are you. Live a little!” He encourages, gently bumping his head against mine.
I let out a long, shaky breath before nodding. “O-Okay, I think 70 miles per hour is enough - Kaden! Slow the hell down!”
I cover his hands with my own which doesn’t do much to stop him from steering, but at least I feel like I have some control over the situation. He cheers in delight behind me as we reach 90 miles per hour and then some more. We were going as fast as the Mustang would allow.
I squeal when he suddenly drifts the car, my body instantly thrown to one side. His arm shoots out to grab me, pulling me in to his chest whilst simultaneously controlling the car. The sound of our laughter mingles together as he drives back down the track.
Kaden parks the car and cuts off the engine before leaning back in his seat and bringing me with him. “So...what do you think of my baby now?”
“Your baby?” I snicker, causing him to poke me where I’m ticklish.
I feel him nod behind me, humour in his voice as he speaks. “Don’t be jealous of Mikaela. She’ll always be my number one.”
“What a shame, I thought I was your number one.” I tease playfully before bursting into a fit of giggles.
“Sorry to disappoint you Luna, if only you came into my life sooner things could have been different.” He quips, mocking sadness.
I sigh playfully and nod my head. “I guess I’ll find some way to move past it.”
He chuckles before opening the door. “Ready to go?”
“Yep!” I pop the ‘p’ before hopping out of the car.
“We’ll come back on Thursday again.” He grins, swinging his legs so that they are outside of the car.
Just as he has said that, six motorbikes speed down the road, two using the mound of gravel on either side to propel their bikes into the air while the rest did stunts like wheelie’s and such on the rough ground. I can safely say that my heart was racing in my chest as I prayed they wouldn’t hurt themselves.
One biker breaks away from the group and stops a foot away, throwing dirt and dust up as he does so. After removing the black and red helmet, I discover it is a man. A very handsome looking man.
He has golden blonde hair with light green eyes that are squinted as he looks at us. His features are soft and boyish with light stubble on his jaw. I can’t imagine how warm he must be with the weather today. It feels like Summer with how warm the air is.
An obnoxious cough breaks me out of admiring the man in front of me and I turn to look at Kaden, who is glaring angrily at me. I shrug and bite my lip when he pulls me by my wrist and smashes me into his side. As the man makes his way over to us, I hear Kaden’s low and possessive growl making me roll my eyes.
“Kaden Reid! It’s been too long man!” He exclaims, doing that handshake-hug men do.
“What’s up, Ryker? Got another race coming up soon?” Kaden asks, pulling me between his legs so that my back rests against his chest while his arms wrap around my waist.
I can feel myself blushing at the action and lower my head so that the men can’t see.
“Yeah man, it’s tomorrow. You should come...and bring your girl with you.” Ryker adds with a sly grin, making me glance at him to see his eyes roaming my figure.
I shrink back into Kaden, feeling his arms tighten around me to the point where it’s starting to become painful.
“I’m busy, maybe next time.” He bites out before standing and pulling me along.
“C’mon man, why don’t you two stick around for a bit?” Ryker asks, his arms outstretched. “We could show you and your girl how to ride a bike?”
I hear Kaden growl something under his breath before gently pushing me into the passenger seat and shutting the door. He then walks straight up to Ryker and says something that has his cheery expression dropping. I see his lips move as he argues with Kaden who ends the conversation and swiftly turns to walk back to the car.
As Kaden is putting on his seatbelt and starting the engine, I glance up at Ryker who catches my stare. He winks in reply and smirks which elicits a snarl from Kaden who immediately moves to get out of the car.
“Kaden!” I cry out, grabbing his arm and pulling him back. “Stop it, let’s just get out of here.”
His angry gaze remains fixated on Ryker and I sigh heavily before cupping his cheek, turning his head towards me. His blue eyes are now dark and resemble a storm brewing. It makes my heart race out of admiration and fear at the same time; fear of what he might do to the man if I let him go.
“He’s not worth your time. Let’s go...please.” I whisper, caressing his cheek with my thumb.
He sighs and closes his eyes momentarily before opening them again. I smile sweetly at the sight of his calm, icy blues. Starting the car, he makes a U turn before driving off, away from Ryker who stood there staring as we create more distance between us.
“I’m sorry about him.” Kaden huffs, driving down the hill that leads to the highway.
“Don’t be, it’s not your fault.” I smile, letting him grab my hand and intertwine our fingers before resting them on his thigh.
“Still, he shouldn’t have looked at you like that.” Kaden replies, an undertone of anger and frustration in his voice.
I don’t say anything and let him cool down, brushing my thumb across his skin. We drive into town in a comfortable silence, my gaze fixated out the window at the passing scenery before it switches to the buildings and people. Since it’s late in the evening now, a lot of workers and students are making their way back home.
It’s bittersweet when we pass the college I had attended, because it reminds me of the time when I would wake up in the mornings, get ready before having breakfasts with Maddox and Eva and going to classes. Now it’s all about jobs, stabilising our careers, settling down and having children. I sometimes wish to go back in time just so I can be carefree child again.
I’m brought out of my daydreaming when Kaden finally turns onto the rough dirt path, driving up to our home at the end. Getting out of the car, I am just about to pick up my bag when I’m suddenly swept off my feet. Squealing, I wrap my arms around Kaden’s neck hurriedly, staring at him with wide eyes.
“What are you doing? Put me down.” I laugh when he twirls us around before picking up my bag and locking the car.
“What? Can’t I carry my beautiful mate inside our home?” He grins, pulling down the collar of my shirt to press a lingering kiss to my mark.
I gasp, my body arching with instant desire. “Kaden, you can’t do that.”
A whimper escapes me when he growls heatedly, his irises brightening to a liquid gold making his intentions known. “You are mine, Luna. That’s my mark you bear.”
“You know what you do to me, it’s not fair.” I grumble as he places me back on my feet in the living room.
His tilts my chin up using his index finger, having to crouch slightly to meet my eyes. “How is it unfair, my love?”
“Because,” I shuffle my feet, looking away as I shrug half-heartedly. “I can’t mark you. I don’t have the same effect on you.”
He chuckles, picking me up again and wrapping my legs around his waist. My breath hitches at the action as I wind my arms around his neck, staring into his breath-taking blues that were swirling with flakes of gold. His eyes are the windows to his soul and right now all he wanted was me.
He carries me up the stairs and into our bedroom, laying me down on our bed. I watch him quietly as he crawls over my body, pressing kisses to every inch of bare skin he could find before capturing my lips in a kiss that has me wanting more than just his feather light touches.
“I don’t need a mark, Luna.” His voice is rough and husky when he speaks, heavily coated with lust. “Just the sight of you drives me to the brink of insanity.”
I murmur his name but my voice is like a whisper in the wind, my fingers trailing over the side of his face, from his temple to his chin. He watches me with stormy blue eyes, eyes that promised me the moon and the stars. I rub my thumb over his bottom lip absentmindedly before snapping back to my senses as a rush of need washes over me.
Pushing upwards, I press my lips to his in a kiss that blows my mind like always as I try to communicate just how much I love him. We pull away too soon but I don’t mind this time. Our clothes soon find themselves on the floor, bodies tangled with each other as our hands roam free over bare skin.
“I’m going to show you just how much you affect me, even if it takes me from dusk till dawn.” He vows, before his lips replace his fingers over my heated skin as he teases my mark.
And he fulfills that promise.
