Kaden's Luna

Chapter 31 - Unwanted Visitor

At exactly five in the evening, I am making my way out of the hospital, my feet aching slightly. All I want right now is to slip into a warm bath before changing into comfortable pyjamas and falling asleep. But, I promised Eva I would help her get ready for her date tonight.

Grabbing my bike, I put my helmet on and start cycling down the streets of Berlin city. It’s relatively busy today and I immediately assume a lot of people are making their way home from work.

It takes me roughly twenty minutes before I reach home and place my bike in the back garden, unlocking the door and entering the kitchen. Leaving my things on the dining table, I rush upstairs and into Eva’s room only to halt at the explosion of clothes in front of me.

She looks up with a panicked expression, her blonde hair in a messy bun. “Help.”

I chuckle and close the door, making my way through the mess. We make a start on putting outfits together, Eva rejecting some I hold up and nodding to other ones. Eventually, we decide on a navy and gold coloured dress. The top is sleeveless with gold designs and the skirt is flowy.

After Eva showered and dressed, we only had an hour to do her hair and makeup. I work on curling her hair in soft waves before helping her with her makeup. When we finish with that, we pick out a pair of heels for her along with a coat she can wear.

She’s in the middle of putting on her earrings when we hear Maddox asking if she’s ready to go. I quickly pass her bag to her before following her down the hallway. Before she starts to descend the stairs, I hug her and whisper good luck before slipping away into her bedroom to clean up the mess.

I hear them talking before the door shuts. The sound of a car driving away alerts me that they have left before I go down to lock the front door and make my way back into the kitchen for dinner. Opening the fridge, I see that Eva has made extra dinner for me which makes me sigh in relief because I was dreading having to cook tonight.

I heat it up before filling up a glass of water and taking it into the sitting room. Choosing a movie, I take a seat on the couch before starting on my dinner.

It’s around nine at night when I hear some noises outside. I had retreated to my room an hour before and Eva and Maddox aren’t going to be back until later, so I’m all alone in the house. Frowning, I get off my bed slowly and make my way over to my window to check.

I peek out the window and see a man snooping around our back garden. My heart beat increases and I immediately grab my phone to call Rico. Kaden had given me his number in case of emergencies but I didn’t think I would be using it until now.

As the bell rings and I impatiently wait for him to pick up, my heart hammers away in my chest. Finally, the call connects and I sigh in relief.

“Hey Luna, what’s –”

“Rico, there’s a man walking around our house.” I cut him off, my throat closing in fear as I make my way downstairs and into the sitting room.

“What?!” He exclaims, the sound of a door slamming in the background. “I’m on my way Luna, don’t worry. Can you see what he looks like?”

I move so that I am peeking from the curtains. “Um, he has a buzz cut, tall and muscular, looks to be in his mid-thirties I think. Hold on, he’s turning towards the – he has a long scar down the side of his neck!”

Rico curses loudly and I hear some loud honking of cars in the background. “Luna get upstairs and lock your door. Don’t make too much noise, he’s a werewolf so he has heightened hearing.”

“Okay.” I whisper, forgetting that he probably wouldn’t hear me.

I quietly make my way upstairs and into my bedroom, locking the door behind me. Taking a seat on my bed, I listen to Rico when he warns me not to look outside my window. I wait impatiently, every minute feeling longer than it is. Fear consumes my body and I wish for Rico to hurry.

He hands over the phone to Owen who tries to keep me calm whilst Rico drives. I concentrate on keeping my breathing even, although it’s difficult to do when all I can think about is a stranger breaking into my house.

Eventually, Owen tells me they have reached and not long after that I hear shouts and rushed footsteps outside. There is a loud bang followed by someone groaning and cursing before everything is silent. I stand from the bed, my heart racing as my mind conjures up various scenarios of what happened outside and what could happen to me now.

Jumping out of my skin when my phone vibrates, I hastily steady myself before picking up the call. Rico tells me that it is safe and instructs me to open the front door. I unlock my bedroom door and make my way downstairs, letting the boys in. Both look dishevelled with a wild look in their eyes as they step inside.

“W-Who was that?” I ask, letting Owen lead me to the couch in the sitting room as I rub my chest with my hand, trying to calm myself down.

“Ace Mathers.” Rico snarls, making me look up at him in surprise. He has never lost his temper before, always calmer than the rest of the group. He notices my stare and his gaze immediately softens, squeezing my hand in reassurance. “I need to call Kaden, stay with her Owen.”

He walks away just as Owen brings me a glass of water. I thank him before taking a few sips, feeling my heart return to its normal, steady pace. Owen sits beside me and tries to take my mind off what just happened but it still replays like a record on repeat.

Who was that man and how does Rico know him? What was he doing here? Is Kaden friends with him? I wonder, sighing at how these questions are going to remain unanswered until my mate returns.

After a couple of minutes, Rico makes his way back into the room and holds the phone out to me, nodding at me to take it. I stand, grabbing it from his hands before walking into the hallway.

I press the phone to my ear, hearing city traffic in the background. “Hello?”

“Luna! Are you okay? Did he hurt you?” Kaden speaks in a rush, the anger in his tone evident.

“I’m fine Kaden, he didn’t hurt me.” I reply, trying to ease his worry.

“I’m catching the next flight over, just stay at Axel’s pack with everyone until I return.” He instructs, making me frown.

“Kaden, he’s gone now. Eva and Maddox will be back soon anyways –”

“No!” He growls into the phone, making me wince. “You will stay at the pack where everyone can protect you.”

“What about my friends?”

“Eva and Maddox will be fine. Please, for my sake, just listen and go with the boys okay?” He pleads, making me look over my shoulder.

Both nod, making me sigh and agree. “Okay, I will.”

“Thank you.” He replies gently, relief in his tone. “I have to go now, I’ll see you soon. I miss you, my little moon.”

“I miss you too.” I mumble, blushing because Rico and Owen probably heard him.

He hangs up and I turn to face the boys with a sigh, handing the phone back to Rico. He tells me to pack my things and I nod, making my way upstairs and quickly grabbing a bag. I pack my essentials and get dressed into a sweater and jeans, grabbing my jacket and phone before I leave the room.

The boys are waiting for me in the hallway as I check that the back door and every window is locked before writing a note for Maddox and Eva. Of course, I must come up with an excuse because if I tell them the real reason then I will have to tell them that my boyfriend is a werewolf.

We make our way out of the house and I make sure the front door is locked. Turning, I stare at Rico in confusion when I see him looking around the neighborhood with narrowed eyes, inhaling deeply. He catches my eye and chuckles, pulling me towards his car.

“I was smelling to see if he was still around or not.” He explains, opening my door for me.

“Oh.” I nod my head in understanding, watching as Owen makes his way out from the back garden and into the car.

Rico pulls out of the driveway and we leave the neighbourhood behind, merging in with the city traffic. I sigh quietly and lean back into my seat. Everyone stays silent and lost in their thoughts as Rico drives on, eventually reaching the familiar gates to the pack.

Getting out of the car when he parks it in the driveway, I smile tiredly at Natalie, as I walk up to the house, who reaches for me with a worried expression. Axel is right behind her, immediately requesting Rico and Owen in his office.

“Let’s get you settled, come on.” Natalie speaks softly, taking my arm and guiding me towards the living room.

I take a seat on the couch and set my bag down, looking up to see her handing me a cup of tea. Taking it from her with a grateful smile, I thank her. She sits beside me, draping a blanket over our legs.

“You okay?” She asks, concern evident in her eyes.

I sigh and nod, staring into the cup. “A bit shaken up but I’m fine. Who was he, do you guys know him?”

Her eyes seem to harden at the mention of Ace and I suddenly wonder if I have asked the wrong question.

“I’ve never met him personally, only heard about him from Kaden, Rico and Axel.” She turns on the television, propping her legs up on the ottoman. “But whatever he’s doing in Berlin, it can’t be good.”

Natalie shows me the guest room I will be staying in until Kaden gets here before demanding that I take a bath to relax myself, telling me to call her if I need anything. I agree and thank her for everything which she waves off, bidding me goodnight before the soft click of the door closing echoes in the room.

I decide to do as she said and take a bath, feeling the tension leave my body the longer I sit there. Eventually, I get out, taking out my pyjamas and changing into them. My mind is overloaded with thoughts and I just can’t seem to switch my brain off. As soon as I have settled into bed and turned off the lamp, my mind starts to wander again.

Who is Ace and why was he snooping around my house? What has he done to make everyone hate him? What if Rico didn’t get to me on time?

I let out a sound of frustration before closing my eyes, trying to get some sleep. I was just about to slip into a deep sleep when someone knocks at my door. I tell them to come in, watching as the door opens to reveal Rico. He smiles gently before stepping in, closing the door behind him.

“Just wanted to check if you’re alright, I thought you might be asleep by now.” He comes over and turns on the lamp, making me groan in protest.

“Don’t werewolves have night vision or something?” I grumble, my eyes adjusting to the sudden light.

“Why yes, they do.”

“Then why would you turn on the lamp?” I growl in frustration, huffing when his eyes twinkle mischievously.

“Silly attempt to take your mind off things?” He offers, chuckling when my expression turns to one of realisation.

“Luna, you’re going to drive yourself insane. Get some rest and when you’ll wake up, Kaden will be here.” He speaks softly, ruffling my hair as I make space for him to sit.

“Rico...” I mumble as he takes a seat beside me on the bed. He looks over at me with a small smile, fixing the blanket. “Is Ace Mathers the man we were spying on in the club?”

There is a short pause before he sighs and nods, his tense posture relaxing slightly. “Yes. That man has something against Kaden and we’re trying to figure out what.”

“Are you and Kaden in danger?”

“I don’t know Luna, I really don’t.” He whispers, a faraway look in his eyes.
