Chapter ~37~
I felt my lower legs hit the railing and snap back painfully, causing me to lose my balance and fall over the rail.
The moment I was detached from the building, I knew I was going to die. I felt and heard the wind whiz past me as the ground got closer and closer. As if I had a moment of clarity, I thought of the incident at the factory. How Leo tried to fly by directing the wind. With the energy I had left, I summoned Air with all my soul. It was the only salvation not to die now. I didn’t feel any new energy. What should I do now? I felt myself falling harder and harder and the ground getting closer and closer.
“Air help me, I need you. Leo! Can’t you hear me? Help me!”
The power was out of me. I closed my eyes and thought of my mother and father. How we were happy with the three of us. So this was it, so this was really the end.
I let those thoughts run through my head, but I couldn’t give them a place. I felt the struggle in my body. Something wasn’t right. When I realized that, I suddenly felt a new power growing inside me. No power from any of the four elements, no, it was a new kind of power. I immediately knew what to do. Deep within my soul lay the answer. Would this be the fifth element? I slipped into my subconscious and called out to Leo. Only he could help me now. Suddenly I felt Air around me. I knew I had finally reached him. That he wanted to help me in this fight.
As if air took possession of me, I felt my body become weightless. I no longer felt or heard the wind whizzing past my body. It was completely still and serene around me. Like I was floating. The connection with Air was now so strong that I opened my eyes. And to my surprise I saw that I no longer fell. No, I just floated a few feet above the ground. I looked up, but didn’t see Lucas. I knew I had better leave, but Renzo was still there, I couldn’t leave him alone. I felt the energy diminish the longer I hovered in the air. I concentrated on the roof with all my strength. How I would get back on the roof. And with that direction of my mind, I felt the wind propelling me toward the railing. It should feel really weird, but it felt good. As if I was being guided by someone I could trust one hundred percent. I felt Air take me over the railing to the roof. With the last bit of strength Air had in front of me, I landed softly on the roof. I saw that the boy and the girl were still there. So was Renzo, only it seemed as if I saw him move something. I looked to the emergency exit and saw Lucas standing in the doorway with his back to me. I froze. I just didn’t know what to do.
Suddenly I felt a calm come over my body. Air had left me, but not yet the fifth element. I felt how my soul felt serene.
But before I could do anything, I saw the boy, who had previously possessed, moving his body. As if nothing had happened, he stood up fluently, almost inhumanely. When I saw his expression, I knew something wasn’t right. At least, my soul indicated it. He didn’t look possessed, but he certainly didn’t look human either. He took a few steps toward me so that he was right between me and Lucas. I saw Lucas jump up startled, first he looked at the boy and then at me. He looked at me incredulously. His big eyes went from me to the boy and back again.
The boy looked at me first and then Lucas. His gaze rested there for a moment.
He pointed his finger at Lucas and as if Lucas was being tortured, he dropped to his knees screaming with his arms wrapped around his body. His eyes rolled in his sockets and the screaming continued. I wanted to say something about it, but I couldn’t. I was transfixed. The boy lowered his finger and Lucas seemed to be in less pain.
“E-warrior!” he yelled.
Lucas looked up with difficulty.
“I should destroy you right away. What you have done is illegal! Do you know who I am?”
Luke nodded.
“Okay, so let’s make this clear. I forbid you to destroy the fifth element. Your job now is to monitor it and report it to me. Is that clear?”
Lucas nodded hard and he collapsed.
Then his gaze went to me. He looked at me inquiringly.
“So you caused all this commotion?”
He took a step towards me. I took a step back with difficulty. I didn’t want him to come any closer. He stopped and seemed to think for a moment.
“I’m looking forward to seeing you again, but in my area.” He smiled for a moment and the boy’s eyes went white and then he closed his eyes and fell to the ground.
I was transfixed. Around me lay four bodies in the large puddles on the roof. The boy and girl lay motionless, but I don’t think they were life-threatening. Lucas looked bad. I didn’t know what that boy had done, but it wasn’t right. And then Renzo. I tried to muster my last bit of strength and walked slowly and painfully towards him. When I was with him, I dropped to my knees and gently touched his face. He looked bad. His face was white with a trail of blood here and there. His soaked hair was covered in blood.
I cleared my throat.
“Renzo? Renzo?”
Trembling, I grabbed his shoulder and shook him gently. His mouth twisted and he moaned a little.
“Sorry.”
I didn’t like that I hurt him, but I was only too happy that he responded.
I put my arm under his good arm and helped him to his feet. With great difficulty I got him seated and leaned against the railing of the roof.
I held my wet sleeve to his forehead.
“Renzo, come on, open your eyes.”
He pursed his eyebrows for a moment and slowly opened his eyes.
“Thank God, you scared me.”
I looked at him gratefully and leaned my head against his for a moment.
“You made it,” he said laboriously.
I pulled my head back and looked at him concerned. I nodded.
Oh my god, he looked bad.
“Come on, you have to go to the hospital.”
He shook his head.
“No, I heal quickly, that’s not necessary.”
I looked at him concerned. Actually, I should also go to the hospital. I felt the wound on my head throb hard. But what should I say? How should I explain everything? And as Simone said, I also healed quickly.
I nodded. “If it doesn’t pass soon, we’ll still go.”
He put a small smile around his mouth and closed his eyes again.
“Renzo, we have to get out of here.”
He nodded.
“I know, but I don’t think either of us can do anything.”
He had a point there. We were too wounded and too exhausted. I lowered myself against the railing next to Renzo. I felt the power of the fifth element seep out of my body and it went completely black before my eyes.
