In Reach?

Chapter Run Mira Run

I run into the forest, not giving a second thought of the pain my bare feet are feeling. It doesn’t take long for me to realize there are two wolves running along each side of me. But why aren’t they approaching me? They seem to just be tracking me. But I try to pull my attention away from them, knowing that he’s behind me. I can’t hear him and I’m not sure how I know this, but I can feel him, his presence is behind me.

That’s when I realize, I just turned this into a chase for him. F*#k me! I know I’m practically running down an unfinished bridge, but right now I don’t care, I don’t care if I’m going to die. I just need to get away from him. I don’t like it, that feeling I got when I saw that smirk on his face. It’s this sinking, gut wrenching feeling with a strange sickening feeling of loss. Why? This can’t be betrayal, I didn’t give my trust to him…….yet,…..and now I probably never will. I never cared what people thought of me, or whether they thought anything of me at all. But why does meaning nothing to him, make me want to just run away faster. I’m afraid, I’m afraid he’ll confirm my suspicions and say it to my face. I can hear him running behind me, but I try and push myself to run faster.

From the view I had in the room, I already know there is nothing out here for miles. But there is a road. I just need to find the road. Maybe then I’ll have some luck. These are after all their woods, I’m playing his game. Then I smell something, it’s like wet grass, and there is a slight sound of running water. I don’t know how I am able to smell or hear these things, but I follow it as some sort of sign. I hope it’s a lake or a river. The chances of him turning into his beast are high, and perhaps I can slow him down if he needs to swim to get to me. Besides, he’s a pretty big man, and I still hold my belief that men don’t float. So fingers crossed that gravity will be on my side.

The sound of running water gets closer and that’s when I see a river, and unfortunately, it doesn’t look that deep. But it is still flowing with a strong current. I run towards it with my bruised feet. I can hear his panting right behind me, shit he’s fast. I practically tumble down the slight slope towards the river and can barely catch my footing. Unfortunately for me, he’s apparently smarter than what he’s muscles make him look, as he decides to just jump down the slope to get to me. He tumbles on me and we roll into the river.

Damn! This water is cold. And I know I need to get up quick before he decides to drown me, because this water is not as shallow as it seems. We barely come to a stop and I push him from me and try to at least stand up first. The water reaches my mid-thighs and I’m completely drenched. Great. I’m sure in times like these, it’s not the best thing to just be wearing underwear and a white T-shirt, and drenched no less.

I look at him, and those deep eyes flicker to a darker shade that actually makes my body tingle. If there are warning signs available, I’m going to assume that was it. I turn and try to run the rest of the way out of the river, but the water is heavy and I’m struggling. But looking over my shoulder I notice he is having an even tougher time walking through the water, it’s probably those jeans. But that’s not my problem right now. Thank you, gravity.

And that’s when I step on something, or rather take a misstep. Pain shoots up through my ankle, and I know I did some damage, but the cool water better do its thing fast, because he’s gaining on me. I just about make it out when he lunges and grabs my sore ankle.

Aaaahhhhh!!!! I scream at his firm grip, which I know is going to add colour to the pending bruise. As if my scream gave him a shock, he quickly let’s go of my foot. But my retreating frame has him throwing his body’s wait on me, again. I’m already annoyed with everything my body is going through, I do not need him to try his weird smelling thing on me again.

So I grab the sides of his chest and sway with all the power I have left in me. Using his weight to roll us over, so that I am now on top, I don’t hesitate to give him a taste of my right hook. I'm no fighter, but given that my previous punch went quite smoothly, I'm sure I can hit my mark again. My hand was already paining from the punch I gave Cutie, but this cool and numbing water is making me braver. His face turns to his right with the force of the impact, and he looks back at me with shock.

Is he really surprised that I hit him? I jump off him and try to run, but I’m so lost with all the rolling around that I’m running back in the direction of the river. I stop for a split second to look around and change my course of direction, but he pulls on my arm, with such force that I’m pulled back into his chest. But with my reflexes, I immediately try and push myself away from him. But his grip tightens, and he lets out a growl of frustration as I continue to struggle against him.

This rough pull and push going on between us is unbalancing, and we end up rolling down the slope towards the river again. I can’t make sense of what is happening as he pulls me even more tightly into his chest as we roll. But in the midst of it all, I feel a sharp pain on my right temple an everything just goes dark.
