Immortals Of Byolla Bay

Chapter 8 – Rikki

By 3:24 am I realized sleeping was out of the question. I had laid down hours ago, knowing I needed my rest to be in top shape to look after Kinsley and my sister tomorrow, but that only worsened my tossing and turning. Putting on my shoes, I jumped off the balcony and ran to Kinsley’s house.

I sensed my mother in a tree a few yards from the back of her house. She jumped down, on high alert, looking around for danger. Quickly I assured her that I was only there because I couldn’t sleep and not because of an unseen foe.

“My stars, son. You have a phone, use it next time. I should have known you wouldn’t be able to sleep with her in danger. You just met her, but yet I can tell you already care deeply for her. As much as I want to be happy for you, I can’t. She is human, Rikki. She will age, and eventually die. You cannot fall in love with her. It will tear your soul from your body when it comes time to lay her in the ground. What is it about her? Her looks, her charm? Please make me understand why you would fall for a mortal?”

My mother brought up some interesting points. How do I explain to her what happened when I grabbed Kinsley’s arms to stop her from falling, though? “I’m going to try to describe it as best I can, okay?” I leaned against the tree she jumped from and she made a motion for me to continue.

I looked over at the window that I could sense Kinsley inside as I spoke, “When she ran into me, she instantly ricochet off and would have fallen if I had not have reached out and grabbed her arms. When my hands made contact with her skin the strangest thing happened. There was a jolt of electricity that shot up my arms and seemingly directly to my heart. Just thinking of her sends shock waves through me. I can’t shake her no matter how hard I try. It’s like when I touched her, she instantly became a part of me. She’s the most beautiful girl in the world to me, and I feel like I will never accept anyone else by my side if it’s not Kinsley. I would do anything she asked of me, tell her my secrets even, which scares me to death because I know my secrets will only bring her pain and suffering. I know this doesn’t make sense, and I know you are going to dismiss this as a first crush or something. So please mother, tell me what is wrong with me.”

I looked over at my mother, who had both hands covering her mouth, with silent tears running down her face. She jumped up and gave me a back breaking hug, “Oh my dear boy! I don’t know which to be for you, ecstatic or devastated. Kinsley is to you what your father is to me. She is your bindende sjel, or binding soul as I believe it translates out to in English. She’s your chosen one. But how? She’s human. I don’t understand.”

She trailed off, muttering more true love and destiny stuff, when I grabbed her hand, “Mother, what are you going on about? What is binding soul?”

She smiled and wrapped her hands around mine, “My son, bindende sjel is a rare gift given to us by the stars. It’s when a man or woman finds their true love by touch. I hated your father when we were growing up. He was loud, obnoxious, always bragged about how good of a hunter he was and his womanly conquests. I was walking past him when his drunk friend fell in front of me causing me to lose my balance. He reached out to steady me and when his hands touched the skin on my arms, I felt a shock. It wasn’t a painful one, but a thrilling one, like a new adventure was about to begin. I looked up into his eyes and I could see he felt the same thing. It’s the most powerful magic in all the realms, destined lovers are strongest when they are together. I’ve noticed that since you have been here you seem a lot more relaxed than earlier. I don’t know what she felt, seeing how she is mortal, but it doesn’t matter. You and Kinsley are bound, for eternity. No matter how long eternity is for her. I don’t understand how your soul is bound with a human, but we do not question the stars, son.”
