Chapter 9
We did not go back to the bonfire and the rest of the grade. I had texted Cassie while we were walking across campus along the woods. I had told her that I was not feeling well and had walked home. I felt bad but Hayden said it was for the best. For reasons I could not comprehend, I trusted him.
“You’re staring at me again.”
“Sorry…” I mumbled, embarrassed. I could not help but stare at him. He was gorgeous. And this whole bad boy taking charge attitude was fucking attractive. Also, in the back of my mind, something was pushing and nagging me to be close to him.
“So, you did not tell me, how did you make the pain go away earlier? Your eyes were also glowing by the way…”
Sighing, he turned towards me and stopped.
“You cannot tell anyone what I did back there. Aria, I’m going to have to trust you.”
“Well, I trust that you are not some psychotic shit head, like Hunter. So, tell me.”
Grabbing a hold of my hand, he pulled me further into the tree line whilst searching the surrounding area. “You are not going to believe me.” He muttered, sounding more like a statement to himself.
“Oh my God, are you kidding? I just shot some guy with a blue flame from my hand that almost burned me from the inside out, and you’re worried about me thinking that you are crazy?” He looked like he thought about that for a second and took a deep breath.
“Good point. Okay, I’m an Elf.”
Holy Shit! This dude is crazy!
I could not help but burst out laughing, bending over, and grabbing my stomach from the force of it. I couldn’t help myself and be tearing up from the laughter.
Hayden looked like he was going to die of embarrassment. That made me laugh even harder. Tears were starting to stream down my face from the laughter.
“An Elf...?” I got out between gulps for breath and more laughing.
“Very funny; are you fucking done now?” he said sounding agitated and looking like he was about to blow a gasket.
“Seriously; you are an Elf?” Shit, he is serious… He stood with his arms folded across his chest and was looking very annoyed. He did not answer my question which only meant he was being dead serious. Oh. My. God.
“Can I see your ears?” It rushed from my mouth before I could stop myself. I was trying to move his hood and hair so that I could see his ears, but he caught my wrist before I could get a look. Someone lost his casual sense of humor… He glared at me.
“My ears are fucking normal like yours. And yes, I am an Elf so could you quit it?”
I could not believe it. I was trying to not laugh but I was failing terribly. My face must have looked like an idiot in a face contortionist competition whilst trying to hold back the laughter. “Stop that!” he exclaimed. I could not help it.
“You are so fucking frustrating! There is nothing funny about being an Elf!” He threw his hands up in the air, agitated, and started walking again. Deciding that I should probably go and apologize, I ran after him.
He could move fast when he wanted to. It must have been those Elf reflexes.
“Hayden, wait up! Look, I am sorry. Today has just been fucking insane for me and when you said ‘Elf’, I thought of Elves like at the North Pole. I’m sorry.”
He stopped then and waited for me to catch up. Goddammit, I need to work out more. I was out of breath by the time I was next to him.
“Shit, you’re fast!” I groaned. Bending over to catch my breath, I really could not believe that my day turned out like this. Looking up at Hayden, I felt bad for having reacted like that.
“The ‘North Pole’...?”
Oh, he sounded pissed… I couldn’t believe that, out of everything, that is what he seemed most irked about.
“Um, yeah, I’m sorry. I don’t know anything about this world, your world. So please don’t be mad at me. Shit…” He looked incredulous. His jaw was straining as he ground his teeth.
“Do I look like I’m wearing red, green, and a fucking bell?!”
No, but I could picture him with nothing but a bell on... Stop it Aria! What the hell was going on with me? I never, and I mean never had thoughts like this. It was mortifying.
“No. I’m sorry.” I calmed myself, apologizing solemnly.
He looked around as if searching for a way out of the awkward situation.
“It’s okay. You’re forgiven.” He let out a heavy sigh and was smiling again. God, that smile could light up the darkest night.
“Thanks,” I smiled back at him, and we were walking again; he with his backpack slung over one shoulder.
“So, how did you save me earlier?” I just had to know. It has been bugging me since it happened.
“I don’t know how to explain it to you in other words besides magic. It is not magic in the way you are probably thinking. I use the power of nature. I drew the Angel Fire out of you and put it in the earth.” So that’s what was burning me, Angel Fire.
“Why were your eyes glowing though? Is that part of the magic?”
“No. That has never happened before. I have no idea why my eyes were glowing.” We were still walking with a determined stride.
“Oh.” Pathetic, I know, but what else was I meant to say to him. It seemed like something was wrong with me. We finally reached the end of campus. A twenty-foot-high wall rose before us.
Oh, fuck no…
