Chapter 128
Half an hour later, Zoe was back in the manor. She didn’t use an umbrella when she got out of the car. Instead, she let the rain fall on her and cleanse her mind as well as her heart.
Stepping inside with her shoes, a pool of rainwater collected on the white carpet. The servant didn’t dare to say anything. All she could do was make some tomato soup for her to fight the cold.
Zoe went upstairs and the first thing she saw was their “wedding photo.’ Mason wouldn't take the picture with her back then. She was the one who shamelessly asked the studio to photoshop him into the picture and paid them eighty thousand dollars for the trouble.
There was a time when she'd look at this picture and look forward to the day when Mason would love her from the bottom of his heart. However, there was nothing but irony when she looked at it now! Stomping onto the bed, she tried to take it down. She was so agitated that she accidentally cut her hand on the photo's steel frame. It was a frightening sight when fresh blood dripped off of her hands, but it was as if she didn't feel pain at all.
She flung the photo onto the ground and proceeded to the makeup table. Then, she sat down slowly and saw her miserable self in the mirror.
Taking in the sight, she realized she was trembling all over and her wet hair clung to her cheeks. Her clothes were drenched and stuck to her skin. She looked exactly like a lady who was tragically ditched by her husband.
In fact, her fate was more tragic than that. One had to be loved first before she could be ditched. On the other hand, all she had to show for loving him for six straight years was his harsh words.
“I'm not done toying with her!”
Lowering her gaze, she pulled open the drawer slowly. The diary was in there. It contained all of her thoughts and sentiments from her youthful days.
She took it out with her bloodied hands and opened it in a daze. Now that she was numbed to Mason, her love for him in the past seemed very stupid in hindsight.
“Today's our first day as husband and wife. He was very rough with me, but I think he'll eventually find out that I didn’t mean for things to happen the way they did that night.”
“He’s going to treat me gently and love me for real when the time comes!”
Tears filled her eyes.
Zoe was depressed and found her entries ironic.
She felt that it wasn't worth it for her past self!
After what happened today, she looked back and couldn't remember why she fell in love with him in the first place.
The few days he treated her decently was all but a part of his intricate manipulation.
Closing it gently, she took both the diary and the wedding photo with her. Then, she searched for Mason's lighter and shambled to the balcony.
She was going to burn these ridiculous things. It'd incinerate any outrageous feelings she had for him.
It was still raining out there. Raindrops fell off of the roof ledge on the balcony.
Without any hesitation, she lit the things on fire. The fire caught on as she took a step back and sat on the recliner. The orange flames illuminated her pale face, lending some color to it.
A black Bentley sped into the yard and screeched to a halt.
Hopping out of the car, Mason ran into the servant when he entered the manor. She was on her way upstairs to give Zoe the tomato soup when she saw her master. Pouting, she said, “Ms. Zoe looks depressed. She's right upstairs!”
He was about to go when he stopped his lifted feet in midair.
There was a burning smell and it came from the second floor! The smell was subtle but it shocked him to the core.
“Zoe! Zoe!" He called out to her and raced upstairs.
She wasn't in the bedroom, but he could see footsteps with water stains in there. They were on the bed as well, as clear as crystal. Raising his eyes, he realized the wedding photo was gone!
He darted to the makeup table as if he sensed something. Pulling out the drawer, he saw that the diary was nowhere to be seen...
