Chapter 8
When May came back to Luna's room, she expected her sleep. To her surprise, Luna was anything but asleep.
Once Luna's eyes met with Mays her face widened into a cheerful grin. “May, May. Oh, May!” she exclaimed as she jumped off the bed and ran to Mays's concerned face.
“Child, you must lower your voice. Nathan is still outside this very door.” May urged. She grabbed Luna's forearms to steady her excited body.
“I’ve done it! I’ve done it.” Luna said, this time lowering her tone as she came closer to May.
May still concerned and perplexed frowned. “Whatever are you speaking about?”
Luna pulled away from Mays's grip and instead grabbed her. She pulled Mays's left hand and guided her to the middle of the room. “Ok, ok I know It's a bit too early and you didn’t tell me to go yet but-” She exhaled. “I talked with the Duke and he said he’ll let me take care of Keir.”
It took a second before May understood. “Could it be true? Are you sure?”
Luna let go of May, still Beaming with pride. “I'm absolutely positive. The Duke is smitten with me, he agreed after I persuaded him a little.” She winked as she glided her hands.
“Dear, I am just as happy about this but now we need to be as careful as ever. Remember, even though the Duke is an abominable man fueled by greed, he can also be observant.”
“Yes, yes I know. I'm telling you May, you have nothing to be worried about. Our plan is foolproof.”
May concerned expression soften. “Hmm, that means only a few more days left. Tomorrow you will have to find time to meet Keir.”
Luna stopped smiling and her face went anxious. “How was he? Did he like the food?”
May stepped away from Luna walking to the window. The same window where Luna had first looked when she had woken up in the Duke's mansion. “Dear, he isn't in the best shape…the sooner you heal him, the better.”
It must’ve been hard seeing Keir like that. After knowing him for so long.
Luna walked to the window as well.
“Anyway, he says he’s alright, still having the same attitude. He loved the food you ordered for him, and cleaned the whole plate.”
“That's good.” Luna sighed in relief.
May put her fingers to her cheek as she scanned the night. “He told me to tell you he said thanks. He's grateful.”
Luna tucked a strand behind her ear, then leaned on the window beside May. “I was told by the Duke that Keir isn’t able to use his powers, which I knew, but will he really regain it by the time we are ready to get out of here? I mean don’t get me wrong! I’m not trying to rush him, and I know it must be absolutely hard to regain one's power especially after not using it for so long.”
May looked at Luna. “No, no I understand your worry, but I’m certain that Keir knows and remembers how to use his powers. I am not sure if it's because of his composed demeanor, but Keir is unnaturally calm. After spending years down there and slowly shriveling, he has not lost his sanity or behaves like a crazy person. Yes, he has gained a little animalistic side but that is only when he hasn’t eaten. Something deep inside me, tells me he has been in a situation like this before.”
Luna tugged on her sleeves not looking at May. This world…is so cruel.
“May?”
“Yes?” Mays's voice sounded a little choked up.
“Does Keir-Will Keir use his Red magic?”
May sniffed and then turned fully to May. She lightly touched her shoulders, and when Luna couldn't look at her, she slowly raised up her chin. “Are you scared of his magic?”
Luna painfully laughed. “How could I? I’ve never even seen it. Although, I am slightly disturbed by the notion of it. Everyone has told me—you have told me it is…not good. That it is harmful….I guess I just want to know If he will use it?”
Her thumb caressed Luna's cheek. “I have just been informed that he will not. Keir has a dark past. A past that I know not to intrude on. It is his reason for not using it. So no we do not have to fret about him resorting to it.”
Luna smiled but it was quickly covered with a saddened look. She released Mays's old hand, giving it a small jolt, before walking to the other side of the room. She walked near her bed and then paused. Luna's heart was aching, she feared that what she was about to say would make May change her mind about her. That she would suddenly become fearful of her existence.
So just as a precaution, she asked, “May If I told you something, something that would change your whole perspective on your…life, what would you do?”
There was an awkward silence before Luna heard Mays's clothes shuffle to her.
“Luna whatever is eating away at you, you do not have to be afraid. I will not say anything. To answer your question, if you did tell me something, that would make me view things differently, I wouldn’t do anything. I would be surprised on what I heard, but if you think that I would tell the Duke-”
Luna quickly turned around. “No, No! I didn’t mean to say that you would-”
May smiled and laughed a little. Cutting Luna off her sentence. “Besides child, I am too old to do anything and It wouldn’t be smart of me if I said anything that the Duke didn’t like. He would kill me for not telling him sooner…as ludicrous as that sounds.”
Her shoulders relaxed and she fell on her bed. “Thats a relief.”
May sat next to Luna. “What is it?”
Luna straightened up. As much as she was nervous she knew she could trust May. May had helped her through so much already, and she just couldn't hide her secret anymore. So she told her who she was. How she wasn’t from Mays world, how she was actually kidnapped, and how it led her to Vendilla.
In the morning Luna was again stuffed inside a tight-fitted dress. Today she had to meet Keir-to do what she promised. But not before having breakfast with the Duke who boasted about himself in the dining room. Luna was incredibly anxious, she could barely eat her food as she waited for the Duke to excuse himself.
After she managed to get away from the Duke, she stacked a plate with Toast, eggs, and ham and poured a cup of water.
The doors were opened by the servants when she met with Nathan right outside the Dining room.
Luna had told Nathan the news about her having visitation rights with Keir. Nathan was rightfully stunned but couldn’t do anything as he slothfully walked with her to the cell.
The sickening feeling of death approached Luna. It was one of the downsides of having healing powers. It particularly was awful for Luna as she had to walk into the Duke's mansion which always seemed to have death around every corner.
The sensation wasn’t a thing Luna could get used to, but she pushed it down, held her head high, and went into the basement.
Keir sat on the cold floor of his cell, his eyes following every movement Luna made. His head tilted a little at her outfit. It was yellow and very tight around her stomach. He couldn’t deny she looked decent, regardless he could tell it was bothering her.
"Luna," he called out, a small smile playing on his lips. "Finally my savior has come."
Luna kneeled down at his cell, trying not to grin. "I always keep my promises, Keir."
He weakly stood up and sat in front of the bars. Noticing Lunas eyes that held pity. He decided to distract himself with the plate she held.
“Ah, more food.” He gave no hesitation has he stuck out his hands out.
Luna gave him the plate but not without staring at his eyes. She couldn’t help it. They were like magnets to her. Him the positive, attracting her, and her the negative, wanting to pull away but simply cannot.
Seeing that she forgot the fork, he just stacked the ham and eggs on the bread. When he had the piece structurally sound he handed the plate back to Luna and pulled the toast in the cell.
“How long are you going to stare at me, Angel?” He said, putting some food to the side of his mouth.
Luna blinked once before setting the plate down. “Sorry, I’m just not used to this yet.”
Keir raised his eyebrow, swallowing. “Should one be used to feeding a prisoner?”
She smiled. “No that's not what I meant. I meant, I’m not used to this place yet. Your world.”
The memory of Luna telling him how she wasn't from this place seeped into his mind. He stopped his mouth from taking another bite and waited for Luna to speak.
"You remember how I said I’m not from this world? Well I truly meant it. Keir. I've found it…fascinating how different our worlds are. You already know I’m not from Vendilla. You see, I come from a place called Earth."
“Earth, huh?” Keir studied Lunas face. Making sure she didn’t have a hint of a lie. She didn’t. Her blue eyes held true, and she didn’t turn away from his gaze.
Keir pushed his hair back with one hand. "Earth? How is it different from Vendilla?"
With a gentle smile, Luna started to explain. "Well, on Earth, it is almost the same as Vendilla. Environment wise that is. The sky is a vast canvas of blue, adorned with clouds that shift and change shape. The air smells different, definitely no smell of death. Unless you lived in a city like I did.”
A city? Keir cocked his head, but didn’t say anything.
“If you lived near forestry, the scent of flowers and trees would fill your lungs. Or some people lived by the waters, where there were oceans that stretch out endlessly.”
Luna put her hand on her face. “I miss the Ocean. When my mother and Father were alive they would take me, but ever since they died I haven't really had the chance to see it. The oceans would always create a symphony of sound."
Luna shook her head and clasped her cheeks unexpectedly, surprising Keir. “Anyway getting off topic. Earth was lovely. We didn’t have magic like you do here, so that's why I was so shocked that I had these… abilities. On earth, there isn't much monarchy, a few of Kings and Queens are dying off and the rules and lands are changing every day.”
She touched the bars, Keir glanced up.
“On Earth you wouldn’t just be put in this god awful cage without reason. You would have a trial and after you had your testimony then your judgment would be decided.”
Keir listened intently, captivated by Luna's words. "And how did you live, Luna? Tell me more about your old life."
Luna's voice became tinged with nostalgia as she continued. "I lived in a bustling city called Chicago, it was surrounded by tall buildings and bright lights. People rushed by, always in a hurry, chasing dreams and desires. There were schools, where I learned and made friends. And there were parks, where I spent hours basking in the warmth of the sun."
The question was bothering him. “So a city is like a village but with taller buildings?’
Luna giggled. “Basically.”
He bit into his toast. “Interesting.”
“I actually finished school a few months ago. I studied to be a chef.”
Keir licked his bottom lip and pointed the small piece of bread at Luna.
Her face glowed. It had been awhile since she was this comfortable with someone other than May. Even when May made her feel comfortable, it was nothing to what she was feeling in this moment. “No, I didn't make that. I’m pretty sure if I even told the Duke, I could cook he wouldn’t let me anyway.”
She crossed her arms and stuck up her head all high and mighty. “It's good for him because I would’ve poisoned it anyway.”
Keir looked away, hiding his twitching lip.
When he composed himself, he felt the ground for a pebble. "It sounds beautiful, Angel. To bad fate lead you here.”
“Yes, but once we get out of here and I find my purpose to Vendilla. Maybe I’ll find beauty in this world.”
Keir didn't respond to that. He ate the last piece of toast and drank the cup of water Luna had brought too.
“Ok! now that you have had your breakfast, I think it's time to heal you before Nathan starts getting worried.” She raised her hands, waiting for Keir to come closer.
Keir did but not without a scowl. “Whose Nathan?”
“Just my Knight, without him, it wouldn’t have been possible to see you last time.”
A mischievous smirk was on his lips. “Oh that weak-sounding boy who called for you last time.” He put his hand out. “He won’t do that again will he? His voice is like a whiny baby.”
His voice doesn’t sound whiny to me…Luna pondered.
“I believe he will, he gets very anxious.”
Keir rolled his eyes.
When it was time Luna was a tiny bit nervous. She was now going to touch what the Duke feared, what Vendillas people feared. She tried not to show her uncertainty as she lightly touched his hand.
They were rough, like sandpaper. He had many cuts on them. His nails were dirty too. Luna pouted.
When I see that guard I’ll force him to give Keir a bath! Why would they leave him in this condition! Its too much.
He inhaled a sharp breath. It had been so long since he touched another person. Since he had been handled with care. It felt like a new experience, it nerved him. “Are you sure you want to touch me?”
Luna put her other hand on him. This time with certainty. “Yes. As long as you promise to never harm me. I think touching you should be fine. Also when I asked the Duke about my powers the other day, he told me it was most potent with skinship.”
She mumbled a few words and her healing magic activated. Keir watched in amazement as the dark room began to glow with a bright yellow light. A light that reminded him of the sun. He hadn’t seen the sun in what felt like an eternity, so when he stared at it he couldn't help but feel warm.
Luna was grateful to be able to heal Keir. She watched his face turn from wary to astounded. The cool feeling glided from her hands to her palms and into her fingertips. It felt amazing each time she used it, although she wasn't used to it.
He could feel his body become healthier. The tired feeling he always seemed to have was now replaced with ease and relaxation. His cuts and bruises were fading, as his original skin tone became nourished.
Seeing that it was working, she tried to focus more on it. Her healing magic intensified as she deepened her connection with Keir's wounds. “Heal, Heal!”
Suddenly she stopped. Her hands abruptly ceased healing as she became overwhelmed with a woozy feeling. She fell on her side as she tried to regain her senses.
When Keir got out of his trance, he saw Luna's state. A feeling that rose up inside him appeared. He started to call out her name, trying to reach her with his voice.
“I-I’m fine. I just tried to push myself, alas it pushed itself back to me in a negative way.” Slowly but surely she started to pick herself back up.
You just had to over do it Luna. That was so embarrassing.
‘“Sorry to scare you, I’m alright. I just need to be careful.” She slowly shook her head and rubbed her face.
Now that he was feeling better, he had the strength to lift himself. With his arms, he pushed himself backward. Away from the bars. “Yes, you should be more careful. I know you want to hurry things up, but good things come to people who wait. Plus I don’t want my only rescuer to suddenly feel ill because of me.”
Luna had now felt better and had her head resting on her fist. “I’ll be more mindful.”
A long silence rolled around before Keir said something.
“Thanks, angel.”
She frowned at the nickname. “You should really stop calling me that, I’m really no saint like you and everyone thinks I am. So far, since I’ve come here, I’ve been unsightly and deceitful.” She lowered her head. “No Angel would do that.”
Keir lowered his eyes looking through his eyelashes. “But you’re so kind, like an Angel. You are willing to help a poor man like myself even though you barely know me? So in a way, you are mine. My Guardian Angel.”
Luna couldn't help but blush when he proclaimed that she was his.
He-he probably meant that as a joke or something.
“My Lady, It is time to go!” Nathan called.
She smirked at Keir's irritated face.
“I suppose I’ll see you tomorrow, Keir.”
