Chapter 24
Chapter 24 Meant For Someone Greater Scarlett was teeling emotional while staring at the front of the Barnes mangion She
took deep breaths, ter teet nearly retreating as her fears take over het
Recalling the last time she was here, her parents castigated her for assaulting Courtney and for shaming the name of the Rames
They never believed her side of the story, claiming that Scarlett was jealous of her adopted sister
It was the though she really was jealous. Scarleti should have the love of her parents and not Courtney She felt she should be
the one living a comfortable life and not her fake sister Not her parent’s fake daughter But why was her life so pathetic? Despite
being the legitimate daughter, she was the one who was cast aside
She felt Courtney was very selfish to silently keep her own biological parents away from her.
Greatly, she sucked in a breath. Her eyes closed as she reached for the handles of the massive double doors, and with all her
courage, she entered the home
Scarlett, it‘s good to see you, child. And may I say, you look really beautiful,” Aurora, the Barnes’ house caretaker, approached
Scarlett and embraced her outright. When she pulled away, she gave off that look of defeat, her eyes looking down
It was obvious to Scarlett how Aurora averted her gaze. She said, “Don’t worry about me, Aunt Aurora They can’t hurt me. And
you don’t have to take a side. I know how you can never betray Courtney. She grew up with you, after all.”
Scarlett suspected Aurora had an inkling of Courtney‘s scheming ways. Only that, like her parents, Aurora also cared for
Courtney. In comparison to Cindy and Philip Barnes, Aurora had a greater chance to witness Courtney’s white lotus act, but she
turned a blind eye to everything. Because, like her parents, Aurora treated Courtney as her own.
Without answering Scarlett, Aurora said, “Let me take you to the study. They are all waiting for you.”
Aurora first gripped Scarlett’s wrist and warned, “Luca is there and they are announcing the date of their marriage.”
“Strange how that has long been overdue,” Scarlett remarked, following behind Aurora.
It did not take long for Scarlet to enter the study, and from her peripheral view, she saw Luca lovingly embracing Courtney, their
faces close to each other, as if they were about to kiss. She ignored their presence. Instead, she gave all her attention to her
parents.
In respect, she greeted Cindy and Philip Barnes, “Good morning, mother, father.”
Scarlett then fixed her gaze on Philip and asked, “May I know what happened to father? Why is he suddenly ill?”
“So you care, Scarlett? After staying away from mother and father for over a year?” From the other side of the room, Courtney
spoke, but Scarlett never gave her the attention that she was asking for
Instead, Scarlett maintained her awareness of her father and reminded, “I’m sure mother and father recall how I was not allowed
to enter this house.”
“But I came on your birthday, father. I stayed outside the gates and left a message with the security. I hope you received my
birthday greetings,” Scarlett said, taking a bow. “I don’t know if you were told, but I want you to know that I tried, despite being
cut off completely.”
Scarlett took the opportunity to study her father.
Like Scarlett, Philip had the same espresso eyes, dark brown hair, and fair skin. What she got from her mother, Cindy Barnes,
was her slender figure.
She immediately noticed how he had lost so much weight and the previous glow on his skin was no longer there. The sight of
Philip in such a state utterly crushed Scarlett’s heart. Even if they had abandoned her, she never wished for this for her father.
Despite Scarlett’s effort to start a conversation, Cindy and Philip Barnes still held back from speaking. Their eyes only followed
her as she took the seat in front of Courtney and Luca.
Scarlett remained to avoid contact with her adopted sister and ex-lover, but the entire time, she swore she felt eyes burning
through her back as she settled in. It easily made her skin crawl, and she gulped.
“Scarlett, Phillip is sick from an unknown disease,” Cindy finally revealed, her voice lacking any emotions.” And Courtney worried
for his last days. She encouraged Philip to make his last will.”
“So it was Courtney’s idea? Why am I not surprised,’ Scarlett thought inwardly, her eyes itching to roll.
“Is it the same doctor again? Have you considered going to another doctor?” Scarlett sought.
“I already did, Scarlett. I took father to different doctors. We even left abroad recently, hoping to find an answer for his condition,
but sadly, no one could tell what was wrong with father,” Behind Scarlett, Courtney said.
“We don’t want to discuss this again, Scarlett. We just don‘t want to add any more strain to your father. We.” Cindy gasped,
saying, “We are already preparing for the worst and that’s why we asked you to come here.”
“Let’s get this over with. I am really tired,” Philip said, his eyes closing as he took a deep breath.
Scarlett’s mouth opened, but no words left her lips. She swallowed her thoughts back into her throat, worried about being taken
for granted once more.
“Since The James And Powel Law Firm had long–handled our legal matters, Luca and his associates will be discussing how
Philip intended to divide the assets of the Barnes,“ Cindy explained.
Following Cindy‘s introduction, Luca and two of his associate attorneys came to the front, preparing to announce Philip‘s will.
While they were segregating their documents, Scarlett only held her head down, but she could not shake off the feeling of how
Luca was staring at her.
What Scarlett did not know, Courtney caught how Luca was observing Scarlett intensely. She gritted her teeth and thought of a
way to divert everyone’s attention.
Courtney also came to the front and revealed, ‘While we are all waiting, I would like to announce that Luca and I have finally
decided on our wedding date. Especially with father‘s condition, we decided to move it up so he.”
She sniffed. Her fingers wiped the corner of her eyes as if they were in tears. She said, “We want father to still be there on our
special day.”
Courtney turned to Scarlett and declared, “And we want Scarlett to be there, too. At least, for that day, we have to try and get
along. Be a complete family.”
“I know you are still hurt about Luca and I, Scarlett -”
“Actually, Courtney, I’m not. Not anymore.” It took everything in Scarlett to speak, all while calming her emotions.
She smiled, peering in Luca’s direction, who, for the last few minutes, had been eyeing her closely. She
said, “I have finally realized how Luca and you deserved each other. Congratulations once more and I wish you will remain
together for eternity.”
“I now know why I had to lose my best friend Luca.” A genuine smile reflected on Scarlett’s face. Her eyes sparkled when she
explained, “It’s because... I was meant to be with someone greater.”
