Chapter 9: Audrie
Audrie gasped. "Avery?"
"Yeah. It's me. I was trying to help..." Avery winced and covered her arm with her wing. It began to heal as her feathers touched it. She lifted her wing to reveal that her arm was completly healed.
"I'm sorry." Audrie hung her head. She didn't know it was Avery and she hadn't meant to scratch her even if it wasn't Avery. The human was still staring down at Audrie. She had an angry look on her face and Audrie hugged herself with her wings. She looked at the wound on her wing. The wound didn't seem to be healing.
"You'll get that treated later," Daisy said. "But anyways what we came here for was to tell everyone that it's time for breakfast. We didn't mean to make it such a big deal."
Audrie had been here all night? She hated to think about that. She didn't want to be stuck here that long.
"I'm not hungry," Audrie muttered.
"Yes, you are," Daisy said. "Now come on."
Daisy walked up to the door. "All creatures and angels gather for breakfast!" she called.
The other creatures and angels slowly began to gather. Audrie sat where she was. Riley walked over to her. "Are you coming or what?" she asked.
Audrie bit her lip. Avery encouraged her to get up by getting up herself. Audrie walked over to the two humans. Daisy and Mike. That's what Riley had called them. She'd said they were lucky. Apparently these two were the nice humans. The other two that came here must be really mean.
Audrie walked through bright white halls. The walls were blinding. She folded her wings around her body as random tourists stared at her. Audrie stared down at her feet. It was scary to have the eyes of many people focused on you at once. As soon as the group walked past heads turned torwards them.
Audrie hated it.
Hated it.
She bit her lip as they passed what seemed to be millions of rooms before they stopped in front of the cafeteria. It wasn't much. Just a few tables that each held enough space for ten people. It wasn't crowded so that was good... At least there was that. The humans led the creatures and angels to a small wooden table in a back corner of the room. Daisy went to get everyone food.
"So, you two are new," a creature said to Audrie abd Avery. She had dark blue wings. She was the night creature. Her white feathers made to look like stars were beautiful and Audrie looked at them for a while in awe. Thankfully, no one noticed.
Avery bit her lip. "Um, I guess?" she said cautiously, looking at Audrie.
Audrie looked at her then turned to the night creature. She hated it there already. She didn't really trust any of them. Even Avery she didn't really trust. But for some reason Avery seemed to trust her.
Which she probably didn't anymore since she scratched her.
But still...
Audrie didn't trust her. She was an angel. Avery wouldn't be able to trust Audrie if she tried. So, how was Audrie supposed to trust her?
Easy, she wasn't.
She wasn't going to trust her. She refused...ish.
Refused-ish.
Totally a word.
Audrie kept her wings tightly wrapped around herself. She decided not to speak.
"So, it's Audrie and Avery, right?" the night creature asked. "I'm Midnight. I've been here seven years. I'm a night creature but you probably know that."
Avery nodded but Audrie just sat with her legs crossed. She felt her wings wrap tighter around herself.
'Stop worrying,' Kat told her.
'Shut up. I can worry as much as I fucking want to.' Audrie almost hissed aloud.
'Fine. Worry then.'
'I really don't like you, Kat.'
'I know you don't.'
Audrie shifted uncomfortably where she sat. She watched as the humans put trays in front of each creature and angel. Audrie messed around with her food with a fork.
"Audrie, is something wrong?" Riley asked.
"No," Audrie said. "Nothing."
Riley didn't push her for an answer.
"Anyways, back to introductions," Midnight said. "Riley, you go."
"They already know me," Riley responded.
"Ok, Matt?"
"Sure," a creature with dark green wings said. He had brown hair that faded into black so Audrie didn't know if his original hair color was brown or black.
"I'm Matt," he said and shrugged. "I've been here three years. I'm a tree creature." He drank some of his milk.
An angel with straight mint green hair and mint colored wings went next. "Willow," she said. "I've been here five years. I'm a tree angel."
"Great, I didn't need to know that." Audrie got up to leave, unfolding her wings.
"No. You aren't leaving," Daisy said sternly.
Audrie growled softly and sat back down. She was in for a long day.
