Chapter CHAPTER 56
Chapter 56
Isabella sighed. “Gwen, you are too kind.”
“Humph, who am I? I don’t have time to argue with them over these petty things,” Gwendolyn responded.
Isabella was happy to see Gwendolyn in a good mood.
She put away her laptop, knelt in front of the bed, and suddenly kissed Clayton on his face. “That’s great! Everything is over.”
Clayton was stunned.
Isabella was also stunned and hurriedly stood up. “I’ll make coffee.”
However, Clayton immediately grabbed her. He would never let such an opportunity slip away.
On the day when Gwendolyn officially resumed work, entertainment reporters gathered around the shooting site. The director politely asked Steven if Gwendolyn could hold a press conference on the scene so that the reporters could leave and not pester them anymore. That was to allow them and the neighboring crew to resume filming normally.
Steven and Gwendolyn agreed.
Surrounded by the crowd, Gwendolyn sat on the stage gracefully while reporters from various media outlets took photos from different angles. She appeared neither unhappy nor satisfied, treating it like any other new work release conference.
“Ms. Carey, please tell us your opinion about this incident.” The reporters bombarded Gwendolyn with questions.
Gwendolyn smiled, her impeccable face capturing everyone’s attention, and said, “I don’t have any opinions. As my father said, a clean hand wants no washing. I believe that justice is in people’s hearts.”
“Ms. Carey, I heard that you and your parents had a fight because of your acting career. Your father stood up for you this time. Did compromise with your parents and decided to quit showbiz?”
Gwendolyn smiled and looked at the reporter as if she had heard a joke. “Your job must feel just as meaningful to you, but in your parents” eyes, it might be seen as a violation of privacy. Would you give up your job for your parents‘ beliefs? Does this difference in philosophy strain your relationship with your parents? Would you abandon your parents because of your job? Would they disown you for being youthful, willful, and pursuing your ideals?”
The crowd was silent for a few seconds and then burst into applause.
Gwendolyn answered every sharp question perfectly.
She answered the friendly questions humorously and retorted the harsh ones mercilessly.
She used to be just a new actress, known for her beauty and talent in acting. However, since she wasn’t particularly famous and had never held a separate press conference before, no one had witnessed her eloquence.
And then, all the entertainment reporters couldn’t help but exclaim that Gwendolyn was not just an eye candy.
Victor smiled at the beautiful and delicate face on TV. He said to Maggie, “This girl is not bad! You can go and sign her to our company. Make the newly acquired film company her studio.”

Maggie’s eyes widened as she exclaimed, “Mr. Maguire, are you serious? Isn’t that a big deal? I would have thought you wanted to pursue
her.”

Victor was stunned and looked at the smiling girl on the screen. “It seems to be a good idea. Why don’t I give it a try?”
“Since Clayton had had a flash marriage, it seems to be a good idea for me to start dating, too, he thought.
Maggie looked at him and then at the TV screen. She nodded. “I’m with you!”
Gwendolyn’s high IQ and EQ at the press conference won her a good reputation.
Mabel, the other protagonist of the incident, was not so lucky. The boss of the film company she hooked up with suddenly went bankrupt. Not only did he not fulfill his promises to give Mabel that wealth, but he also had no time to make follow–up arrangements for that matter. Mabel was directly exposed under the lens of the media.
The internet was a battleground. Initially, Mabel and her friends had aimed to exploit it to ruin Gwendolyn whom they viewed as a threat. Mabel held the belief that hooking up with the boss from the film company would secure her future, even though the middle–aged man didn’t get divorced. With her determination, she felt she could penetrate any seemingly stable marriage. Her unrelenting confidence prompted her to exhaust all efforts to defeat Gwendolyn.
But her fortunes took a sharp downturn, catching her completely off guard..
Her dark past was exposed, and right then, she was facing the consequences she had intended for Gwendolyn.
The news that Mabel was promiscuous, maintaining relationships with several men in secret, spread out. When those men found out, they publicly criticized her, exposing all her secrets. In the end, the public realized she was more shameful than those R–rated actresses,
The wife, whose marriage was sabotaged by Mabel, posted something to condemn her heinous behavior.
The outcry for Mabel to exit the entertainment industry grew louder. She became a pariah, and even her manager and assistant abandoned her due to public pressure.
When someone informed Gwendolyn about Mabel’s current situation and asked if she felt relieved, Gwendolyn responded indifferently. “I don’t concern myself with others‘ affairs, nor do I have any interest in them. My focus is solely on the new play we’re filming. As for what you mentioned, I don’t feel any sympathy. Everyone is accountable for their own actions, and I believe in karma. This experience will only reinforce my commitment to self–discipline in the future.”
Gwendolyn’s speech won her public’s favor again.
Gwendolyn finally found time to go home and apologize to her parents.
Of course, isabella went with her. But Isabella told Andrew the news because she was worried.
Upon seeing his daughter kneeling in front of him, Bernard remained calm. He helped Isabella up and said, “Isabella, stand up quickly. You’ve become so thin, it’s like you’re all bones. I will ask Janelle to cook something delicious for you.”
Janelle Carey, Gwendolyn’s mother, glanced at her daughter who was kneeling, and then dragged Isabella away. “Come with me to the kitchen and help me cook,”
Isabella secretly kicked Gwendolyn. Of course, Gwendolyn understood it and kept kneeling without saying a word.
Isabella secretly glanced at the father and daughter in the living room while picking vegetables.

Janelle pulled her back and said, “Well, don’t look at it anymore. Let them solve everything by themselves.”
Isabella expressed her concern. “But Gwen has been kneeling for a long time, but Mr. Carey hasn’t allowed her to get up.”
Janelle glanced at her with affection and said, “She deserves to kneel. This will help Gwen understand the importance of her persistence. It’s important for her to realize that there’s no reason for her to give up or not do it well.”
Isabella looked at Janelle in surprise. It took her a long time to digest what she heard, and she stammered, “M–Mrs. Carey, do you not object
to Gwen’s choice anymore?”
Janelle smiled. “When did we object to her acting? Bernard is upset because she’s still acting immature, and he wants to help her overcome
her capricious temperament.”
Isabella patted her chest and said, “Mrs. Carey, my heart has been hanging all the time. I’m about to have a heart attack.”
Janelle patted Isabella’s face and said, “You always worry about Gwen. Take care of yourself. How’s the internship going? If you need anything, just come to us. Bernard and I have always treated you as our daughter. If you feel shy to ask us for help, we will feel quite bad. When Gwen was being rebellious, Bernard even said, “It’s okay. We still have Isabella!“”
Isabella smiled and nodded. “That’s right. You still have me. I am better than Gwen.”
Bernard and Janelle had treated Isabella like their own daughter since the day Gwendolyn brought her home. Without them, Isabella wouldn’t have survived all these years.
When Andrew arrived, he saw the scene.
Bernard was sitting on the couch drinking coffee and reading newspapers, while Gwendolyn knelt down in front of the coffee table. Janelle and Isabella were busy i in the kitchen..
Bernard put down the newspaper and asked Andrew, “What takes you here today?”
Andrew took the box in his hand to the kitchen and said, “Mrs. Carey, I bought Mr. Carey’s favorite crab. Please cook them for us.”
And he winked at isabella.
He walked to Gwendolyn and said curiously, “What mistakes did you make again? Isabella is so busy in the kitchen. Why are you still kneeling here?
Gwendolyn deliberately looked at Andrew with a sad face.
Andrew made an expression as if he suddenly realized something, “Did you upset Mr. Carey? Why don’t you punish her by making her help in the kitchen, Mr. Carey?”
Bernard glared at them. Andrew, Gwendolyn, and Isabella had grown up together. Andrew was like a son to him, and he also regarded Isabella as his daughter. He immediately recognized Andrew’s and Isabella’s intention to help Gwendolyn.
Bernard folded the newspaper and said lightly, “I didn’t ask her to kneel,”
Andrew and Gwendolyn were both dumbfounded.
Bernard felt that it was almost time, so he motioned for Andrew to sit next to him.

Then he glanced at Gwendolyn, who was still kneeling, Gwendolyn inherited all the virtues of her parents. She was outstanding in appearance and had excelled since childhood However, she was also a bit willful and conceited. Although Bernard and Janelle loved her dearly, they knew they couldn’t always be there for her. Thus, they felt the need to caution her
“Owen, do you know why I object to your acting and entering the showbiz?” Bernard asked.
Gwendolyn’s legs were numb, but she dared not move. Although she had a bad temper, she didn’t dare to lash out before her parents.
Upon hearing her father’s calm tone, she was initially surprised, but she quickly composed herself. She looked up at him earnestly and said, “understand that the entertainment industry can be complicated. I can be too straightforward at times. You’re worried that I might get hurt or lose myself.”
Gwendolyn shitted forward on her knees and said, “Dad, don’t worry. I added some conditions when I signed the contract. I won’t participate in kissing scenes or engage in scandals for publicity. I’ll stick to my principles.”
Bernard nodded and said, “I believe you can do this. These are my basic requirements for you. But what worries me is whether you can consistently stick to them. Tell me can you always be a good actress or model and make it your career?”
Gwendolyn swallowed, lowered her head, and said in a low voice, “Dad, I don’t want to lie to you: I won’t always act. Of course, if the script is right, I will do it. But when I accumulate enough experience and capital, I… I want to be my own director. That’s my dream.”
She was a little dejected and lowered her head. She would rather make it clear once than have her parents worry about her all the time, even if they punished her.
Although Bernard and Janelle were both gentle scholars, Gwendolyn was punished a lot by them.
Bernard looked at Gwendolyn in surprise, “Have you made up your mind? Have you planned it already?”
Gwendolyn nodded and said, “Dad, I don’t want to be just an entertainer. I want to be an actor. I work hard not just to become popular and famous. Right now, I’m learning how to master different roles so that I can produce quality films in the future. I learn from talented directors while acting I understand that directing a play is not easy. It’s even more demanding than running a company. There’s so much to learn everywhere, but, Dad, I always remember your teachings. I’m serious about my goals.”
