Chapter Epilogue
Six months ago, the world plunged into darkness. The globsters now controlled the earth.
Loni wandered south along the coast, searching for survivalists who remained, who were independent of electrified society.
Each night, she would occupy whatever building she could find. She rested on the bed, dropped her backpack next to her and retrieved the crank powered radio.
“Is anyone out there?” She asked into the radio and listened to the feedback from any other end available.
Nothing. Night after night. Day after day.
“Well, if anyone’s there, stay safe – and love your family,” Loni said, holding back tears.
She wanted nothing else but to find her family. She wanted Tim to nag her for something. She wanted her mom to teach her something. And she wanted to talk to her dad again.
“If my family is out there,” she said slowly. “I’ll find you.”
She heard birds for the first time in a while. The world sounded better. Quieter, yet louder.
“This is our punishment, I suppose. We can’t cheat the planet. Or death. But our time is over,” Loni said into the radio.
The silence over the radio changed to static, “This is Outpost 67; are there more survivors with you? Send us your location and we’ll come get you. Over.”
Loni sobbed in relief. It was Michael’s voice.
