Gardens of Destruction

Chapter CHAPTER 21

Val lingered in the enveloping darkness, her breaths deep and laborious. The ember of her courage had been extinguished, leaving behind a weary soul longing for solace. She yearned for nothing more than to be wrapped in her mother’s embrace, to escape to a place bathed in warmth and light. Reality blurred at the edges, transforming into a dreamlike haze. Rooted to the spot, her ears picked up the occasional sinister scrape, a sound that seemed both alien and ominously familiar.

Around her, the plight of the others painted a more harrowing picture. Their cries and screams, distant and muffled, echoed as if from another world. Pain was absent from her being, or perhaps it had morphed into a form beyond her young comprehension. A sensation, alien yet gentle, crept through her small, fragile form, a transformation unfolding within but no longer a source of fear. She was becoming something new, an unknown entity, and this realization was her sole anchor in the churning sea of change.

Visions danced before her eyes – a kaleidoscope of colors clashing and melding, creating a tapestry of light and shadow. These images, foreign yet oddly familiar, beckoned her to unknown realms, whispering secrets she couldn’t quite grasp. They demanded something of her, a task unspoken, and she understood her role was to comply, to surrender to the unfathomable.

Through her fogged vision, she glimpsed a flash of something wondrous, crystalline, resembling a bush adorned with colorful blossoms. It was as if it beckoned to her, to her specifically, yet she couldn’t comprehend its nature. Amidst this ethereal vision, strange noises began to permeate the air – a cacophony of grinding metal, intertwined with what seemed like whispered voices. In the enveloping darkness, a faintly luminescent purple cloak materialized within her sight, only to vanish as mysteriously as it had appeared. The experience was disorienting, yet mesmerizing, like witnessing a fleeting moment of otherworldly beauty, a glimpse into a realm that defied understanding and logic.

In an instant, the world shifted. Abrasive sounds of metal scraping metal pierced the silence, then vanished as abruptly as they appeared, taking her lingering anxiety with them. A presence, ethereal and indefinable, enveloped her. She felt a guiding force, leading her to a sanctuary warmer, more inviting. Clarity remained elusive, yet the oppressive fog in her mind lightened, revealing glimpses of understanding.

The others, whoever they were, continued their enigmatic work around her, but the tendrils of fear dissipated. Fleeting sensations of her mother’s warmth brushed against her consciousness – a comforting, yet distant echo. The chaotic jumble in her mind began to align, each piece of the puzzle finding its place, unraveling the mystery that had ensnared her. A profound transformation brewed within, a rebirth into an existence she faintly comprehended as inevitable.

She was gradually piecing together the otherworldly dream, each fragment crystallizing into clarity. Time had lost its meaning, yet she sensed an impending shift, a new dawn on her horizon. She was emerging anew, and an unseen chorus awaited her awakening. Her identity and purpose slowly unfurled within her mind’s eye. But as clarity neared its peak, a singular, potent thought surged through her:

“Mommy!” - The word, a whisper, a beacon in her fog-laden mind.
