Chapter MARDICHI - Summoned
Wilhelm Castle, Dread Country
MARDICHI
King Jonis was staring at Mardichi steadily through his bleary brown gaze. “I understand that the punishment has been dealt.”
“It was indeed.”
“In what form?” Humor made the king’s lips twitch.
“Spanking.”
“Did you savor it?”
“I did not.” A dangerous note tainted Mardichi’s voice. Warning the other man not to press further.
“And I understand from my Captain that you must leave us?”
“I must. Immediately. But I will return as soon as I am able.”
“And you want me to hold the woman until your return?”
“I gather I am already in your debt but thought you might gain some justice in being the one to keep her captive until my return.”
He mulled that over, his brows lifting in consideration. “That is true. It will quite be to spite her.”
“She will be enraged.” Mardichi acknowledged. “And your men now have some experience in dealing with her.”
“Ah.” The king nodded. “And you know no one else suited to contain the chit.”
“Correct.”
“Return soon.” The King cautioned.
“Yes, King. I will return as soon as I am able.” Mardichi bowed out of his reach. Backing up and spinning on his heel to hop back on his mount. Riding headlong out of the Bailey.
“Where is he going?” The king asked.
“I…Don’t…Know.” Norris worried the hem of his striped tunic. Avoiding the King’s long look.
Norris finally caught up to Mardichi. “Am I going with you?”
“Not on this venture, My Friend.” Mardichi put a hand to his back. “Have I ever thanked you for your cool head and wise advice.”
“No. Never!”
“Well, thank you.”
“Does that mean you’ll leave me some coin?” Norris asked urgently.
Mardichi tossed a leather purse over his shoulder.
Norris scrambled to catch it. Gleeful at the happy jingle from within.
“Forever Knights?”
“Forever Knights.” Mardichi agreed.
Neither noticed King Jonis slowly turning at the words to watch Mardichi leaving the Throne Room. Jonis cocked his head in interest as the door closed behind RedBayne the Assassin.
King Jonis summoned the Captain of his guard. “I need to send a message. Get me parchment, ink and my seal.”
“Yes, My Liege.”
