Chapter 6
Chapter6 Diego is Hired
“What way?” Helene felt that Carlisle was putting her in the
wrong.
“The way you just did it. That’s too blunt and cruel,” Carlisle expressed his frustration with Helene’s actions.
Helene didn’t want to explain. She opened her phone and played recorded audio.
In the recording, Matilda repeatedly emphasized that Carlisle asked Helene to take care of all three meals and arrogantly told her to mind her business and not interfere with anything
else.
As an experienced finance professional, Helene was always alert and cautious around her bosses and colleagues and at home, so recording conversations had become a professional habit. Little did she know that it would come in handy today.
The more Carlisle listened, the tighter his brow furrowed; he was astonished and furious.
After a while, he spoke again, but his tone had softened a bit, “My aunt introduced Matilda, and I’m afraid she wouldn’t take it well if you replaced her right after we got married. Maybe give it some time if you don’t want to keep her.”
Helene noticed Carlisle’s dilemma but didn’t believe that such a housekeeper could take good care of Franco.
“Then I want to install surveillance cameras at home.”

Carlisle knew what Helene was thinking; she was worried that Matilda might do something harmful to his grandfather.
“It’s up to you,” Carlisle said, starting the car and offering to drop Helene off at work on his way.
Their offices were not far from each other, but Carlisle didn’t want to reveal his identity, so he stopped the car at an intersection and said he could only take Helene this far.
Helene didn’t think much of it and got out of the car.
As soon as she entered the office, Freya intercepted her.
“I’ve got some good news. Diego had an interview at Bamford Group yesterday, and the HR manager seemed to have a good impression of him. It would be a huge leap for him if Diego is hired.” Freya happily shared.
“That’s none of my business. I don’t want to hear anything about you and Diego.” Helene pushed Freya away and tried to
leave.
“Hey, wait! I haven’t finished yet. I heard you put your
apartment up for sale on the Internet. Why don’t you sell it to me and Diego?”
“Can you pay the full amount in one go?”
“Well, no, but we can do it in installments. Diego will earn five to six hundred thousand a year if he gets into Bamford Group. You think we’re deadbeats?”
“I want the full payment, no installment sales.” Helene firmly refused.
“Hey, why are you so petty? At least you and Diego had a

good past. Why not sell it to us?”

“Freya, listen carefully. I’d rather sell the apartment at a lower price than sell it to the two of you.”
Helene ignored Freya and quickly walked into the office area, leaving Freya stomping her feet in anger.
That apartment had a prime location, good decoration, and a low price, but it was just unattainable for Freya and infuriated her.
In President’s conference room, Bamford Group.
During the morning meeting, Carlisle’s eyelids were drooping, and he couldn’t stop yawning.
The executives exchanged glances, trying to figure out what Carlisle had been up to last night. He looked like he hadn’t slept all night.
Was he working overtime? But he didn’t leave the office late yesterday.
Was he hanging out at a bar? But he wasn’t into that.
Was he playing games? He never played games.
After much speculation, everyone agreed that Carlisle must have been out with a woman, as they found long hair sticking to his shoulder, swaying back and forth with the cool breeze from the central air conditioning.
Considering Carlisle might have had a passionate, wild night, people attending the meeting just gave a simple report and

dispersed.
But the news of Carlisle sleeping with women spread like wildfire and quickly circulated throughout the company.
Carlisle saw a report about Helene on his desk in his office.
He rubbed his forehead and reluctantly read two pages. His hand trembled when he saw the part about Helene living with her boyfriend Diego for three years.
She had a boyfriend, and yet she agreed to marry Carlisle?
And she had lived with his boyfriend for three years?
Carlisle felt a surge of anger, and his face darkened instantly.
Even though he and Helene were only nominally married, her “living together” with her boyfriend was something he couldn’t accept.
He had been with his ex–girlfriend for five years, but they never crossed that line. The concept of pre–marital
cohabitation was something he could never come to terms
with.
Greedy, pretending to be innocent, deceitful, lying… All these negative words rushed into Carlisle’s mind.
He remembered the look of joy on Helene’s face when she learned about the divorce six months later.
Half a year to get half a million, and then she’d run away with her boyfriend?
No, it’s not just half a million; another half a million he lent her.

He tightened his grip on the report, on the verge of crumpling it into a ball.
At that moment, the HR manager knocked on the door and entered.
Carlisle paused and slowly raised his head, asking, “Wha’s up?”
The HR manager was taken aback by Carlisle’s expression and stammered, “Uh, Mr. Bamford, yesterday we interviewed two candidates for the senior network engineer position. Mr. Duke, who was in charge of the project, took leave and asked me to handle it. I don’t know much about the technical skills of engineers, so I had to send their resumes to you. Can you decide which one to hire?”
The HR manager put the resumes in front of Carlisle and hurriedly left.
Carlisle was getting increasingly irritated. Why did he have to bother with such trivial matters?
With a glance, he noticed the resume on the top, which read, “Applicant – Diego Flores.”
Carlisle opened the resume.
Diego, male, 24 years old, majoring in Network Engineering from an Ivy League school and previously worked as a technical supervisor at Byterise Ltd.
So, this man was Helene’s boyfriend?
His technical skills were average, and his certificates seemed

more like flashy show–offs than practical ones.

Carlisle’s gaze then shifted to the address section, which matched the one Helene had provided him during their
discussion.
Indeed, the two of them were living together.
Carlisle was relieved that he hadn’t used his real identity for the matchmaking. This woman was so obsessed with money, and if she knew his true identity, it wouldn’t be easy to get rid of her.
After some contemplation, Carlisle picked up the phone and called the HR department, instructing them to hire Diego with a monthly salary of fifty thousand.
As soon as Diego received the job offer, he told Freya immediately.
Of course, Freya wouldn’t miss the chance to boast about her boyfriend to Helene.
During the entire lunch break, she kept raving about how capable her boyfriend was and how he could earn fifty thousand bucks a month.
Her voice was so loud that she seemed to want the whole
office to hear.
Helene was distracted all afternoon, making several mistakes in her calculations. She struggled until the end of the workday.
Her younger brother called, saying their grandmother had just been hospitalized and fell critically ill.

Helene rushed to the hospital.
The situation was critical, and her grandmother needed urgent surgery.
Helene convinced the hospital to proceed with the surgery after paying a deposit of 500,000 bucks.
Since her younger brother was graduating from university this year and preparing his thesis, Helene asked him to return to school. At the same time, she stayed at the hospital to accompany her grandmother.
At 9:30 p.m., Helene’s phone rang, and it was from Carlisle.
