Chapter I’m the Landlady
Chapter1 I’m the Landlady
It was a scorching summer day with the sun blazing high.
Helene Lopez stood outside the shopping mall, handing out flyers as part of her part–time job.
Suddenly, she noticed a young couple entering the mall through a side entrance.
From their back view, it looked like her boyfriend, Diego Flores, and her best friend, Freya Rivera.
Wasn’t Diego supposed to be going for a job interview today?
Helene’s heart tightened, and she hurriedly followed them inside the mall.
But she lost track of them after going in circles for a while.
Then, her phone beeped, notifying her of a credit card transaction.
Jewelry counter. Amount spent: 49,998 bucks.
Helene’s hands trembled at the sight of the figure; it was nearly half a year’s income.
She rushed to the payment counter and saw the cashier placing a sparkling diamond ring on Freya’s delicate ring finger.
The diamond on that ring was big and exquisite, precisely the one Helene had been eyeing for a long time.

Watching the satisfied smile on Freya’s face, Helene felt like her mind had gone blank.
Diego had been unemployed and living off her for the past six months, and now he dared to use her credit card to buy a diamond ring for his mistress.
Did he think she had died or something?
Helene lunged forward, snatched the ring from Freya’s hand, and thrust it back at the cashier.
“Return this ring.”
“What do you mean, Helene? I just bought this ring! Why should I return it?” Freya yelled.
Slap! Helene’s palm landed on Freya’s face.
“What are you doing?” Diego returned from making the payment and embraced Freya protectively. He yelled at Helene.
“So, I spent some of your money. Do you have to act like a mad dog and hit people? Have you no shame?” Diego scolded her with a look of complete disdain.
Her heart felt as if it had been ground to pieces. She felt betrayed, angry, and humiliated, her eyes blazing with fury.
“So, you’re okay spending my hard–earned money on another woman and then have the nerve to call me shameless?”
“I did spend it, so what? Look at yourself; no man would be interested in someone like you!”

support Diego. She had given up skincare products and wore old clothes, but what did she get in return? Shameless and open betrayal!
As more people gathered to watch the scene unfold, Diego angrily threw his credit card and receipt in Helene’s face.
“Take it all back! All you care about is money, money, money! I’ve had enough of you.”
The card hit Helene’s face, causing sharp pain, but the pain in her heart was far worse.
“Helene, a woman like you can only die alone. No man can put up with you,” Diego sneered before grabbing Freya’s hand and leaving the mall.
Helene remained silent and picked up the credit card and receipt from the floor. After completing the refund, she returned to the house she shared with Diego.
It was a two–bedroom apartment, and Diego had his room.
Ironically, she used to think that having separate rooms was a gentlemanly arrangement.
As soon as she entered the house, she began packing Diego’s belongings, preparing to kick him out.
While shaking off the bedsheet, she suddenly noticed two used condoms.
Looking at the “fresh” condoms, Helene crushed the last trace of illusion she had about Diego.
She threw his belongings out the door one by one as she packed.

“Helene, are you out of your mind? Who gave you the right to touch my things?”
Helene sat on the sofa in the living room. Once, she believed that Diego was the most handsome man in the world, but now she felt nothing but disgust when she looked at him.
“You came back just in time. Please give me the key, and don’t you come back here again. I don’t want you to dirty my place.”
“Are you kidding me? I paid rent before too. Why should I move out?” Diego yelled in anger.
“You said it that was before. What about the rent for the past six months and the living expenses for the past two and a half years? Did you give me that?”
Helene calmly retorted.
Diego felt embarrassed as the neighbors began to gossip and point fingers. To save face, he thought of settling the matter temporarily and trying to appease Helene.
“Helene, all you want is money. The rent for the past six months is just twenty or thirty thousand. It’s only one and a half months‘ worth of my salary. Once I find a job, I’ll pay you back for the six months‘ rent.”
“No need to wait for that. Let’s give her the money now.” Freya took out her phone, walked up to Helene, and said,
“Just so you know, once I pay the rent, you’ll have to move out today.“”

Freya was clever and calculated everything. Half the six months‘ rent was just a bit over ten thousand bucks, but over the years, Helene had spent far more than that. With this act, Freya could greatly impress Diego.
After all, Diego was an Ivy League graduate, and he was considered promising. He used to make thirty thousand in a month!
Watching Helene nod in agreement, Freya opened her payment code and quickly transferred the money.
Then, with a smug look, she pointed to the door. “Now pack your things and get out!”
“No rush.” Helene turned around and calmly took out a property deed from her room.
“Take a good look, you guys.” Helene opened the property deed and was listed as the owner.
“I own this apartment, and I want it back today.”
“You tricked me, Helene?” Seeing the property deed, Diego immediately exploded with anger. “You’re the landlady, yet you made me pay rent for so many years?”
“Isn’t it normal to pay rent for a place you live in?” Helene shrugged innocently.
“Well played!” Diego pointed at Helene with trembling fingers. “I underestimated you.”
“Helene, you’re so despicable.” Freya was now regretting it all. She lost her money and her place to stay.
“Not as despicable as you guys.”

Helene opened the door. “Take your things and get out!”
Freya wanted to continue making a scene, but Diego saw the neighbors gathering to watch and hurriedly dragged her
away.
As they left, Diego glanced back at Helene, scheming in his heart about how to get his hands on this property.
After the battle with that scumbag, Helene slumped against the wall feeling drained.
Strangely, she was only thinking, “Well, at least I won’t have to work so many jobs to support that jerk anymore.“”
But just as she breathed a sigh of relief, her phone started ringing. She took a glance and found it was her little brother calling.
“Helene, Grandma has been diagnosed with cancer, and the surgery will cost 500,000 bucks. I don’t have that much money, I…” Her brother’s voice choked with tears over the phone.
