Chapter 5 The Nanny
Helene couldn’t shake the feeling that Carlisle was angry, and she regretted being too candid with him. She just wanted to save him money as a kind gesture since he’d given her free reign of his account. But he didn’t seem to appreciate it.
Soon after, Helene was feeling drowsy. She could hear the sound of the bath running as she put away the card and took some medicine for her cold. Then, she changed into her pajamas and went to bed, making sure to separate the bed from the middle with a quilt.
She slept on the side farthest from the bathroom, leaving space for Carlisle. Originally, Helene had planned to wait for Carlisle to come out to talk, but after taking the medicine, she soon fell asleep.
Carlisle had no intention of talking, making sure to take a long shower before he left. In her drowsy daze, Helene could feel the bed sinking under another’s weight. But she was so sleepy that she couldn’t keep reacting or even keep her eyes open.
She soon drifted off into a dream of her grandma, where she threw herself into her grandma’s arms. Wrapping her arms around her grandma’s neck like she did when she was a child, Helene hugged her tight and rubbed her cheek against her grandma’s.
Her grandma’s embrace was so very warm, and she smelled so good as well. It was like she had just taken a bath, and the scent of shampoo and soap made Helene even more comfortable.

Suddenly, her grandma pushed her away in disgust. But the more she pushed, the tighter Helene hugged in return.
Early that morning, Carlisle lay in bed staring at the ceiling. A certain someone had latched onto his arm like an octopus, wrapping around him so tightly that he couldn’t get a wink of sleep. There were several times throughout the night when he wanted to kick her out, but he held back when he heard her calling out to her grandma.
The encounter exhausted Carlisle more than handling
business in the office through the dead of night. Regardless, Carlisle got up and prepared to go to work later that morning.
Helene was fast asleep, most likely because of the cold medicine. Carlisle was almost annoyed that she was sleeping so well and wanted to slap her awake.
Just then, Matilda had come in to deliver a freshly ironed suit to Carlisle. “Mr. Bamford,” she asked, “is Ms. Lopez awake yet?”
Matilda peeked past him and into the bedroom as she opened the door. She was curious about Helene because she had planned to introduce her niece Delilah to Carlisle. If all went well, she would become the daughter–in–law of the powerful Bamford family.
Delilah was a medical doctor, and she had the looks to match. The old master of the Bamford family, Franco, didn’t give Delilah a second thought, however. He even sent out an online advertisement calling upon random women to marry his grandson, which made Matilda very angry.
And not only that, but the old man had even promised Helene ownership of the estate if she became pregnant with Carlisle’s

child. The thought of the young woman taking everything that Matilda had planned for her niece enraged her to the point that she couldn’t sleep at all that night.
She still felt that Delilah deserved this honor, not Helene, and tossed and turned the evening before thinking about it. She got up early that morning, and on the pretext of sending Carlisle a fresh set of clothes, she wanted to see whether the two had sex last night.
With dark circles hanging under his eyes, Carlisle took the clothes listlessly and ignored whatever Matilda was saying. Through the crack in the door, Matilda could only see a single, bare arm stretched out of bed.
And considering how tired Carlisle was, she quickly concluded that the two must have gotten busy last night. The thought made her feel uncomfortable.
“Mr. Bamford, someone from property management stopped by yesterday saying we had to pay our property taxes for the second half of the year,” Matilda informed.
“Tell Helene about these matters from now on.”
“But-” Matilda wanted to continue, but seeing how impatient Carlisle was becoming, she was wise to shut her mouth.
Soon after Carlisle left for the office, Helene was awoken by Matilda lifting the blanket off of her.
“Miss Lopez, It’s time to get up and make breakfast.”
Helene rubbed her eyes and was to see Matilda looming over her by the bed.

“But you were out like a light. Do you think you’d be able to hear me knocking?” Matilda retorted confidently.
“I may have been sleeping heavily, but don’t you think it’s a bit rude to barge in here like this?” Helene had never seen a caretaker act like this before, and she likened Matilda to a batty old woman like Professor Umbridge.
“Fine, fine. I’ll be sure to knock next time,” Matilda relented
with a roll of her eyes. “Anyways, who’s making breakfast this morning?”
“Who used to do that?”
“Why, it was me, of course. But when I asked Mr. Bamford this morning about it, he instructed me that you would be responsible for three meals a day!”
Helene was baffled to hear this. Carlisle never told her about this, not to mention the nanny he hired for so much money didn’t even want to cook.
She glanced at Matilda and sighed, “Well, I can cook. What will you be doing?”
“You don’t have to bother yourself with what I have to do. You just do what you have to do.”

“I mean, if you’re willing to give me half of what we pay you, I‘ d be happy to take care of those three meals,” Helene shot back, frustrated and confused as to why Matilda was targeting her. She also didn’t know what Carlisle had intended

either, but she knew she wouldn’t stand for it.

The moment Matilda heard this, she immediately became furious. “Why do you want my pay? Mr. Bamford asked you to cook! It isn’t like I was the one who asked you to do it?”
“Then I’ll call him to make sure,” Helene replied, calming down. “Now, please leave. I’d like to get changed.”
Seeing as Helene was quiet and appeared frail, Matilda didn’t expect her to be so difficult to deal with. Matilda quickly left, allowing Helene to get out of bed. Once Helene was changed, she tidied up the bedroom and walked downstairs to the kitchen.
The Bamford family estate’s kitchen was massive, reminding her of the kitchens found in three–Michelin–starred
restaurants. Helene had been cooking since she was a teenager, so breakfast wasn’t difficult for her. After quickly whipping up a nutritious breakfast, vaguely following a trending recipe that she had learned from TikTok, she brought it to Carlisle’s Grandpa.
The second he had a taste, Franco was delighted and praised Helene’s craftsmanship. This only served to anger Matilda further, as she originally wanted to embarrass Helene. Instead, she received high praise from the old family master.
As Helene left the old man’s room, Matilda tailed closely
behind her.
“Ms. Lopez…”
“Please call me Mrs. Bamford,” Helene replied, cutting Matilda off with a steely glare. She couldn’t help but feel that this
caretaker was truly worthless.

Though reluctant, Matilda eventually did as Helene asked. “Right. Mrs. Bamford, you only made breakfast for two this morning. What am I supposed to have? If I have to feed myself while in employment here, then I will have to ask Mr. Bamford for a raise.”
“We pay you $1200 already. That’s more than enough to pay for three meals a day.” Seeing as she was going to be late for work, Helene turned around and walked away. She didn’t have the time for all this nonsense.
Suddenly, she stopped as Matilda grabbed her arm. In a tearful voice, she pleaded, “Mrs. Bamford, please… You can’t do this to me…!”
“Let go,” Helene said, taken aback by Matilda’s sudden outburst. She tried to pull her arm back and break free from Matilda’s grip, only to see Matilda fall backward. From an outsider’s perspective, it appeared as though Helene pushed Matilda.
“Helene!” Carlisle yelled sternly from behind.
Helene turned her head to see Carlisle, who stormed past her to help Matilda up.
“Matilda is far from young. If you have something to say, out with it already. But I won’t tolerate you mistreating her like this!”
It was at that moment that Helene understood what Matilda was plotting. She must have seen Carlisle off in the distance and caused a scene for him to see.
“Why aren’t you saying anything?” Carlisle repeated, his face twisting into an ugly rage seeing Helene fail to explain herself.

Not knowing what else to say in her defense, Helene exclaimed, “I didn’t push her! She threw herself to the floor.” She didn’t expect this unassuming nanny to be so scheming.
“Mr. Bamford, you must believe me. That’s not what happened,” Matilda whimpered. As she spoke, the corners of her eyes turned red and she spoke in such dismay that it was as if she’d just come from tragedy. She acted as if she had just watched her father die, and it was incredibly convincing.
“What’s going on?” Carlisle said angrily.
“Mr. Bamford, Ms. Lopez wanted to please the old man this morning and said that she would be responsible for the cooking in the house. All three meals! Then, she said I wouldn‘ t have to cook anymore, but in return, my salary would be cut in half. You know how things are back at home, My son is taking his SATs, and we’re preparing for him to go to college…”
Carlisle quickly put the pieces together, remembering how Helene had mentioned the previous night that they paid Matilda too much and that she wanted to change caretakers. And just like that, an incident happened this morning.
“Come with me!” Carlisle pulled Helene into his car by the front of the house, not wanting his Grandpa to hear them
argue.
“I know you want to replace the babysitter, but this isn’t the way to do it.”
