Chapter 27
It appeared they were poised to repeat the same trick once again, just as they did when her sister got married.
They extended the offer to her brother–in–law, letting him give the engagement gift of 40 thousand dollars. However, since Ed, Andrew, and Juana treated Nadia and her sister so badly. Nadia’s sister, of course, didn’t let her husband give the engagement gifi!
It was a disheartening episode at that time. During the wedding, Nadia’s brother–in–law and sister neglected to extend an invitation to relatives from the Lewis family.
Yet, her sister and brother–in–law confidentially bestowed a sum of 20 thousand dollars upon Iris.
At that time, Iris felt apprehensive about entrusting money to the bank, and Iris didn’t know how to withdraw money as well.
Consequently, the entirety of the 20 thousand dollars bequeathed by her brother–in–law underwent conversion into cash before being presented to Iris.
Ultimately, Ed and his family learned about the existence of that money. During a period when Iris was absent, Ed’s wife breached the lock and ransacked Iris’s quarters, making away with the entire sum of 20 thousand dollars.
This incident left Iris in a state of despondency, suspecting the theft to be the handiwork of another.
In the end, Iris heard from a neighbor who bore witness to Ed’s wife picking the lock to Iris’s abode, and upon exiting. Ed’s wife clutched a black cloth bag in her grasp.
Nevertheless, what would happen even if Iris knew about that? Ed’s wife refused to admit her action and instead spread allegations that Iris was falsely accusing her.
Finally, the matter ended up with nothing definite.
“How did you come to know about my marriage?”
It hadn’t been long since she got married, and Nadia had foregone informing anyone apart from Iris, her sister, and her best
friend. Clare.
“Nadia, why did you conceal that from us? Had it not been for my recent encounter with Rebecca’s mother, who told us that you got married to a remarkably rich man, we would still know nothing about that..
“We were even told by Rebecca that your grandmother was hospitalized here. You really shouldn’t have withheld such. significant news from us. We’re family, after all.”
With a gentle pat upon Nadia’s back, Juana reproachfully chided her.
“That’s right. Your parents passed away early, and we’re your closest family now. How could you have shielded an event as momentous as your marriage from us?”
Andrew interjected.
After saying that, he dragged a nearby stool closer and perched himself at the edge of Iris’s bed.
“Mother, do you think I’m right?”
Iris finally realized something. She initially believed her three children had come to visit her, but it soon became apparent that they were there solely for Nadia.
Snatching up the nearby cup, Iris flung it forcefully to the ground.
“Bang!”
With a resounding crash, the glass shattered into a constellation of shards, scattering in all directions.
“You ungrateful trio! Leave now! Get out of here right now!”
Iris bellowed with all the strength she could muster.
Ed. Andrew, and Juana were taken aback by Iris’s outburst.
“What on earth are you doing?” Ed asked.
“Is she a powder keg that is set to ignite at any moment?” he thought.
“Mother, we came for a visit with benevolent intentions. Why such fury?” Andrew rose from his stool and said to Iris discontentedly.
“Mother, what are you doing?! We came here to visit you, and we said that just for Nadia’s sake.
“She couldn’t get married to a man and give birth to children just like this with nothing. You have nurtured her for so many years. If there was not an engagement gift, is this not a blatant monetary loss?”
Juana cogently said what she thought, pointing toward Iris.

Nadia hastened forward and helped Iris lie down. With a worried gaze, she looked at Iris, saying, “Grandma, are you alright? Lie back for the sake of your well–being. Do not let your anger, kindled by concern for me, harm your health.”
After readjusting the covers for Iris, Nadia turned to look at Ed. Andrew, and Juana in anger.
Pointing a finger at the door, Nadia issued a vehement command, “Leave this place immediately. Your presence is not welcome here. Just go, or I’ll call the security.”
Then, she threw all the apples and bananas they had brought to the corridor outside the ward.
Pushing them out, she said angrily. “Retrieve your belongings and begone from this abode. I don’t have relatives like you
all.
Nadia trembled with indignation, realizing that they were unscrupulously pursuing financial gain. She really thought they finally had a conscience.
“You insolent girl! We stand as your elders. Is this how you treat us?”
Ed pointed his finger at Nadia’s nose, chiding loudly. After saying that, he raised his palm and wanted to hit Nadia.
“Ouch! It hurts…”
But before he could strike, a large hand tightly gripped his wrist. It was so painful that Ed yelled in pain.
On the side, Juana quickly picked up the fallen fruits. As she looked up, she saw Ed yelling while his wrist was gripped by
someone else.
“Who are you? It’s none of your business when we’re teaching a lesson to the young kid of our family. Mind your own business.”
James pinched Ed’s wrist and pushed him forcefully to the ground.
Turning to Juana with cold eyes, he said in an icy voice. “I’m her husband. The one who dares to hit my wife hasn’t been born yet.”
Nadia looked at James, her heart getting warm as she heard his words.
Looking at her husband, she thought he looked even more handsome today.
“Why are you here?”
“I came to the hospital on business and stopped by to see if Iris needed anything.”
James then reached out and scooped Nadia into his arms..
Juana was taken aback by James’s cold aura and didn’t dare to say anything else.
She hadn’t expected Nadia to marry someone so handsome, and according to what Rebecca had said, he was also very wealthy. How lucky Nadia was!
“It seems to be a good chance today, and we’re gonna have to take good advantage of him,” Juana thought.
“Nadia, is this your husband? He’s quite handsome!”
Juana went to Nadia cheekily, looking like she had totally forgotten what had just happened.
Glancing at Ed, who was still on the ground, she added, “Ed, look at you! What right do you have to harm Nadia? She’s the pride of our family. She lost her parents when she was young, and we should show her more love and care.”
“Absolutely! I agree with Juana. Don’t think I’m not aware, Ed. Nadia is dutiful and caring, especially towards Iris. Just look at
how well she takes care of Iris.”
Andrew chimed in, not forgetting his purpose for visiting.
“James, you’re here to see my mom, right? Please follow me.”
Andrew stepped aside and made a gesture to invite James and Nadia into the ward.
Nadia looked at Andrew’s and Juana’s hypocritical looks, thinking they could even win Oscars for their performance.
However, she didn’t want to bring shame on herself in front of James.
Therefore, she obediently followed him into the ward.
Looking at Andrew and Juana, Ed, still on the floor, felt a surge of resentment, but soon, he realized that Nadia’s husband must be wealthy enough to provide good medical care for his mother and afford to pay such a high medical bill.
For the sake of the overall situation, he had to get up from the ground, patted his buttocks, and followed into the ward.
Inside the ward, James released his hold on Nadia’s waist and approached Iris.
“Grandma, I came to see you. How are you feeling?”

Iris’s face brightened as she saw her grandson–in–law. “I feel much better now. Please, sit down…”
However, her smile froze as she noticed her younger son and daughter behind James and Nadia.
But since James was here, Iris could only suppress her anger. She didn’t want to let her family become a joke in front of James, afraid of embarrassing Nadia.
Iris smiled again and said kindly. “Nadia, go and fetch a glass of water for your husband.”
James immediately stood up and said, “Grandma, I’m not thirsty. I just came to see you and pick up Nadia.”
Nadia took the cup and was pouring the water inside when she heard what James said. She checked the time, and it wasn’t even noot yet.
She remembered James mentioning a surprise for her at night, but why did he come here to pick her up now?
Andrew, who was standing behind James, approached James, extending his hand to shake hands with James.
“Hello, I’m Andrew, Nadia’s uncle.”
James raised his head and glanced at Andrew, making no attempt to shake his hand.
Andrew held his hand in the air for almost a minute. Seeing that James had no intention of shaking his hand, he pulled it back awkwardly and rubbed it against his coat.
“James, let’s go into the living room. I want to talk to you.”
After saying that, he turned to look at Iris and said, “We have something to discuss in the living room.”
“What do you have to discuss with my grandson–in–law? Whatever you need to say, just say it here.”
Iris knew her son well, and she could predict his intentions by his movements.
