Chapter 16
Chapter 16
James sat in the car, relaxing with his eyes closed. Suddenly, the driver next to him lowered his voice and said, “Mr. Howe, it seems like Mrs. Howe has spotted us.”
James opened his eyes and glanced to the side of the road. Sure enough, Nadia was looking their way while holding onto Daisy.
James quickly pressed the button to close the car window.
Just as Nadia was about to show Daisy, she saw the car window slowly rising.
Anxiously, Nadia tugged at Daisy and rubbed her own eyes. Surprised and puzzled, she asked uncertainly, “Mrs. Howe, was that James?”
She was unsure, as her easily obtained husband was just a programmer who earned a monthly salary of 4 thousand dollars. He only drove a worn–out Chevrolet Sail, not a luxurious car with a driver.
It couldn’t be. It was absolutely impossible.
It must have been her eyes playing tricks on her.
At the same time, Daisy denied it as well, saying, “My dear, you must have mistaken it. There’s no way my grandson was in that car just now.”
Only Daisy knew that she was lying to Nadia. Luckily, James was clever enough to close the window in time. Otherwise, he would have been caught.
The car was moving slowly like a turtle.
If Nadia was determined to get to the bottom of this, she would do whatever she could to get the answer, even if it meant confronting her husband.
Daisy understood Nadia well enough and knew Nadia wasn’t someone who favored wealth over poverty. In the past, Nadia had saved her life. When Daisy’s son and daughter–in–law wanted to give Nadia 40,000 dollars, Nadia promptly refused it.
However, Nadia despised being deceived by others. She and James had just gotten married, and their relationship was still fragile. If James’s true identity was discovered, their marriage might not last.
Due to the traffic, the bus ahead was still stopped at the station. Daisy pulled Nadia and pointed to the bus ahead, saying, “Hurry, Nadia, the bus is right in front. Let’s catch it.”
Nadia saw the bus and hurriedly pulled Daisy onto it.
Elena had spent the entire night taking care of Iris at the hospital. She rushed to the market and bought some meat paste and a few eggs to make breakfast for her son and husband, as soon as she entered the house, she was speechless at the scene
before her.
She saw her two–year–old son in his pajamas, his runny nose dripping from both nostrils. He was sitting on the floor, crying loudly.
Seeing that Elena returned, Ray cried even harder.
“Wail! Mom… Mom…” Ray cried, gasping for breath between sobs. The clear mucus flowed into Ray’s mouth.
The weather in March was quite cool in the morning. No matter what, Ray had to wear a jacket.
Elena stepped forward and picked up her son from the floor, placing him on the sofa. She was about to go back to the room. to find clothes for her son to wear. As soon as she entered the house, she saw her husband asleep. He was even snoring, the sound of which could even wake up people upstairs and downstairs.
Their son was pily two years old, yet he was left in the living room while his father slept soundly.
Feeling angry. Elena pulled the blanket off.
“All you know is to sleep. Is this how you take care of our son?” Elena demanded, turning around to quickly dress her son.
Nathan was abruptly awakened by the cold. He realized that Elena had uncovered his blanket. He jumped out of bed, chasing her to the living room and kicking her in the back.
“I work hard to earn money and provide you with good food and drinks, but all you think about is your family! You leave our son to me, and you still have the nerve to scold me!” he shouted.
Elena was kicked to the ground, her chest hitting the corner of the coffee table hard. The pain made her curl up on the floor instantly.
Seeing Elena curled up on the ground, Nathan didn’t bother to help her up. Instead, he continued to insult her, saying, “Did you bring back the 10,000 dollars? If you didn’t, from today onward, don’t expect me to give you a penny.” Nathan’s tone
was cold and vicious.
Ray cried beside her, watching his mother curled up on the ground and his father yelling loudly. It made him cry even louder.
Listening to Nathan’s harsh words, Elena felt her heart grow colder with each passing moment. This was the first time Nathan had laid hands on her since they met. Seeing her son cry so sadly, Elena endured the pain and slowly got up from the ground, holding her son tightly in her arms.
Meanwhile, Nathan went back to the room, put on his clothes, slammed the door, and left, leaving the mother and son crying in despair.
Elena watched as Nathan slammed the door and left. He was the man she had loved for so many years. He had promised to treat her well for a lifetime and let her focus on her beauty while he earned money to support the family. He had asked her to quit her job and become a full–time housewife to bear and raise their children.
But why had things turned out like this?
Was it because she had given 10 thousand dollars to her grandmother for medical treatment? Why did he accuse her of only caring about her own family and not her husband? Why did he resort to violence over just 10 thousand dollars?
Elena never expected that in just a few years, Nathan would change like this.
All men were liars.
Elena felt that her heart had been completely broken. It seemed that she couldn’t rely on others and ask for money anymore. A woman had to have her own career and be financially independent, so as not to be at the mercy of others.
But as Elena looked at her crying son in her arms, her heart softened. Her in–laws were useless. They had promised so much. before she got married. They had said that once she got married, they would take care of the child. But later, Nathan said his parents were too old and couldn’t take care of the child.
The truth was that it wasn’t that they couldn’t. They just didn’t want to help her take care of the child.
Elena’s parents–in–law were biased, favoring the rich and despising the poor. Nathan was their eldest son, and they had another son who ran his own business and was wealthy. They eagerly offered to help take care of their younger son’s child, but not Elena’s.
The thought of this made Elena’s tears flow uncontrollably.
How could parents be so biased?
Elena sat on the sofa for a whole hour before she finally regained her composure. She cooked a bowl of chicken soup for her son, making extra to bring to Iris at noon.
While cooking, she tidied up the toys in the living room, cleaned the floor, and did a thorough cleaning of the house. Only then did she stop.
For the sake of her son, she had to be strong. She had already made up her mind that once her son was a little older, she would send him to kindergarten and go back to work. She was done relying on others like this.
Nadia had just arrived at the flower shop and neatly arranged the flowers before taking a watering can to water them.
Meanwhile, Daisy was wandering around the flower shop. She had a special fondness for flowers. Looking at them instantly lifted her mood.
By mid–morning, Nadia had already sold two bouquets of flowers, both ordered online and delivered by delivery guys.
Just before noon, Clare entered the shop carrying two bags of fruits. As soon as she walked in, she noticed Daisy and greeted
her with a smile.
“Hello, Mrs. Howe
Daisy politely nodded in return. Clare was a clever girl, and Daisy liked her.
Seeing Nadia wiping the counter, Clare put down the fruits and snatched the towel from Nadia’s hand.
“Isn’t your grandmother in the hospital? I’ll watch the flower shop for you. You just go to the hospital and keep your grandmother company.”
Worriedly, Daisy added, “Yeah, Clare is right. Let me accompany you to visit your grandmother.”
Nadia looked gratefully at Clare and Daisy. Her grandmother did need someone with her right now. But she felt hesitant to ask for help. “Yesterday, you were the only one watching the shop, and I didn’t feel right about letting you continue to handle everything on your own.”
Before Nadia could finish speaking, Clare interrupted her, saying, “What’s the big deal? We are friends. Don’t be so polite
with me.”
Just then, Nadia’s phone rang. She answered it and heard the voice of Jim on the other end.
Hearing Jim’s voice reminded Nadia of him and Rebecca.
“Why is he at the hospital visiting Grandma?” Nadia wondered. “Could he be seeking revenge on me?”
The thought terrified Nadia. She trembled with anger and asked through gritted teeth. “Jim Ford, what are you up to? The one you’re looking for is me, not my grandma.”
