Fifth Avenue

Chapter Chapter Twenty-Eight

Doc looks into the distance and sees the fading black clouds “Hartley are you ready to go?” he asks dumping the unconscious and cuffed body of Wisdom into the back seat of Mertle.

Hartley sighs and looks over to Justin and Bullet’s still bodies which lay in the trunk “I’m not going” she whispers and Doc pauses looking to her sceptically “I can’t do it” he walks over to Hartley and crouches to her eye height, his hand goes up and makes her look away from them “If I had just done what you’d said, and we’d stayed on this rooftop, Justin would still be here” she says sadly.

“Hartley this isn’t finished, if the Association find you” he groans “if they find out where you are there is no saying what they may do to you, please get in the car” Hartley looks down, her hands still covered in Justin’s blood.

“Maybe they can take the pain away” she whispers, Doc frowns and pulls her into a hug. “Thank you for everything you have done for me Doc, you gave me a family, a life and you have given me experiences most people can only dream about, even if it was all short lived this was still a pretty good year” she smiles and Doc nods.

He stands up again and pulls down his long sleeves to his shirt, he opens his mouth and goes to say something but stops and gives her a small smile “Take care kid” he says clearing his throat, he goes to sat something else but instead he turns and walks to the car quickly driving away.

Hartley sighs and begins to walk down the road aimlessly, the soft patter of rain on the broken pavement was the only sound she could hear. She continued to walk until the beginning of the next day when a car pulled up beside her “Need a lift hot stuff?” a guy asks sticking his head out of the window.

She was going to deny it but the mention of a lift brought attention to the stinging pain of her legs “Yeah thanks” she smiles getting into the backseat.

The guy who gave her a lift was actually really nice and dropped her off at the next town, the only payment he asked was her number, which she had to make up because she didn’t have a phone.

Looking down the street of the town she was in she rubs her hands together before shoving them in her pocket, her breath was visible in front of her because of the cold weather, although she tried to make herself believe that this was the end she wasn’t stupid enough to believe it.

For now, she was alive and that was all that mattered.

Two towns over Doc sat behind 13 large screens, each one showed different people moving around, currently he was focused on two, one of those two showed Shooter talking to himself in the halls of a gun shop, the other showed Hartley walking down the icy street.

Doc stands up, his left hand slightly rubbing over the still raw stump that was left where his arm once was. He walked to the bars which kept Wisdom in her place “What are you smiling about” he asks cruely. Wisdom looks up to Doc, she was beaten and bloody, she smiled even wider making more blood poor fromher mouth and stain her teeth red.

“You seriously think she was the only one?” Wisdom laughs.

“The only what?” Doc asks angrily, Wisdom doesn’t answer instead she laughs. He opens the door to the bars making her stop laughing and try and get into the corner away from him, Doc grabbed her already tearing collar lifting her from the ground, she kicked her leg trying to hit him but missed every time “The only what?” he asks again, this time he slams her into the wall.

She coughs, blood covering Doc’s white singlet “the only child of Catherine and Richard Faye”
