Chapter 171
Ned nodded and said, “If you were to meet Edith, I am certain you would take a great liking to her.”
Rubby Lawson rarely heard such praise from Ned and couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow in curiosity. For a moment, she found herself intrigued by
Edith
She had been abroad receiving treatment for her health and had not been involved in the affairs of the young couple. Now that she had returned, it was time to take a closer look at Edith.
“Prepare a welcome gift. We shall pay her a visit.”
“Yes, Mrs. Lawson.”
Half an hour later, at the villa…
Edith was in the kitchen with Susan, preparing spaghetti for lunch, because Carlos had said he would be joining them.
She did not want Susan to overexert herself in the midday heat.
So she suggested spaghetti and Carlos agreed.
Suddenly, there was a noise from the living room. Susan wiped her hands and went to see if Carlos had arrived.
Instead, she found a familiar face.
“Mrs. Lawson,” she said in surprise. “Are you here to visit Edith?”
“Yes,” Rubby Lawson replied. “It is time for Edith to meet me.”
No sooner had the words left her lips than Susan grew uneasy.
After recounting the tale, Rubby Lawson’s brow furrowed. “Carlos is playing with fire! How could he not reveal his true identity and allow Edith to remain in the dark? Does this mean they have yet to consummate their marriage?”
Susan shook her head gently in response. “Given Edith’s character, I do not believe she would betray her husband, even if she remains unaware of the
truth.”
Rubby Lawson was so incensed that she struck the armrest with a heavy hand. “They are playing a dangerous game! Edith is young and naive, but Carlos is a grown man, why does he behave in such a manner? And you, Susan, you knew of this and yet did nothing to stop it? Is this how you care for Carlos‘ wife as i instructed?”
Susan trembled with fear and bent low in apology, begging forgiveness.
Edith heard the noise from the living room and hurried out, abandoning her task.
The tension in the air was palpable.
She saw Ned, the familiar face, and a woman in a wheelchair.
The woman’s delicate features and graceful movements drew the eye, but there was a sharpness to her gaze and a steeliness to her demeanor that hinted at hidden depths. Like the petals of a rose, she was soft and inviting, but one wrong move could reveal the prick of her thorns.
Despite her age, her charm was undeniable.
“Who is this woman?” Edith wondered. “Why is she scolding Susan?”
She stepped forward and gently pulled Susan behind her. “May I ask who you are?” she said. “Why are you in my home?”
When Rubby Lawson noticed this, it came as a surprise to her that Edith held a servant in such high regard.
Rubby Lawson said, “I’m Cárlos‘ mother”
Upon hearing this, Edith’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“Carlos‘ mother, then… then what should I call her?” she wondered.
She couldn’t make sense of it all. But Rubby Lawson spoke up. “Just call me Mrs. Lawson. Come here, let me have a look at you. I want to know what kind of person has captured Carlos‘ heart.”
Her attitude softened as she waved her hand.
“Is this little girl an adult?” she wondered.
Edith not very tall. Her long hair was tied behind her back. Her bright eyes shone like stars in the sky. Furthermore, her cheeks had a bit of baby fat and were rosy, making her quite endearing. Thus, Rubby doubted that Edith was grown–up.
Edith was not as gentle as Natalie Huffam, but more spirited, like a cat.
Edith approached timidly, her big eyes fixed on Rubby Lawson with curiosity.

Chapter 171
Rubby Lawson took her hand, which was soft and delicate.
“She’s a pretty good girl,” she thought.
“Tell me about my son, has he been treating you poorly? If so, don’t hesitate to let me know. I’ll stand up for you.”
Rubby Lawson said generously, with a smile on her face.
Edith thought she had come to scold her and say that she was a married woman who dared to flirt with others, but the situation suddenly changed, and it turned out like this?
She rolled her eyes and asked hesitantly, “Can I truly confide in you? If I do, you won’t get me into trouble, will you?”
“It seems you have a lot to say. Rubby Lawson said. “Go ahead. I’ll help you teach Carlos a lesson.”
“Carlos always has a sour expression on his face, as if I owe him money. He always hits me on the head and spouts nonsense. The rules are one thing for me, and another for him! He’s also a picky eater he doesn’t like sweets and is so particular about his meals…”
She ranted on as if accusing Carlos of some great wrongdoing.
Rubby Lawson listened with a smile on her lips and joy in her eyes.
She could see why Carlos was drawn to this girl.
The girl was lively, innocent, and beautiful, like a sunflower.
Her mind was pure, and her presence radiated warmth and joy like the sun on a clear day.
On his way there, Carlos found out that Rubby Lawson had not returned to her residence but had gone to Edith’s instead.
Worried that his plan would be exposed and that Edith would misunderstand something, Carlos hurried over as fast as he could.
He entered the villa, and Edith was serving the spaghetti. “Uncle!” she called, waving. “You’re just in time for some hot spaghetti.”
Seeing her smile, Carlos felt his tension melt away.
He went to her and hugged her tightly.
Edith could feel the sweat on his body and the rapid beating of his heart.
*Did he run here?” she wondered.
“Why was he in such a hurry?”
Although Edith didn’t know what had happened to him, she gently patted his back, trying to ease his mood.
“What’s wrong?” she asked. “Are you hungry? The spaghetti will be ready soon.”
“Is Rubby Lawson giving you a hard time? Don’t believe anything she says. Do you hear me?”
Carlos let go of her body, looked at her face with burning eyes, and said seriously.
“Huh?” Edith was stunned and didn’t understand.

Meanwhile, Rubby Lawson emerged from the kitchen, her voice clear and cold. “I told Edith that I approve of your relationship. But now it seems I must break you two apart?”
Carlos frowned.
He pulled Edith behind him, facing his mother with a cold gaze., “Mother, do you really have such a good intention?”
Edith was not the daughter–in–law she had handpicked, and Carlos was afraid that Rubby Lawson would make things difficult for Edith. Perhaps she sought to control Edith for her own purposes, such as dealing with Carlos.
Either way, it was not the situation Carlos wanted to see.
Rubby Lawson raised her eyebrows slightly. “That depends on your performance. If you satisfy me, all will be well.”
“I will satisfy you.”
Carlos replied coldly.
Edith was confused.
“What was happening?” she wondered.
“Weren’t they mother and son? Why did they seem like enemies?”
She spoke up hesitantly. “The spaghetti will be ruined if we don’t eat it soon. I’ll go get it.”
Carlos‘ tense heart relaxed at Edith’s soft voice.
He took her hand and looked deeply into her eyes. “Let me go with you.”
