Chapter 140
Chapter 140
“In fact, we don’t know much about Miss Natalie. She had a good relationship with Mr. Lawson. Later, she was adopted by Rubby, so she essentially became one of the family. Five years ago… Mr. Lawson and Miss Natalie were engaged, but Natalie ran away from the engagement party. Rubby hushed the whole thing. Outsiders may not know it, but the whole upper class
knows a little.
“Not only that, Miss Natalie got together with Mr. Jones. She’s been missing for five years. I guess she’s the reason why Mr. Lawson has a strange temper. Poor Mr. Lawson!”
“So they were together five years ago?”
“Yes, but only they know what exactly happened. We shouldn’t even be gossiping about this,” Susan said with a sigh.
When Edith heard this, her eyes turned red and aching. She pointed at her nose and asked, “Susan, do she and I have something in common?”
Hearing this, Susan tapped her finger on the table thoughtfully. Finally, she nodded and shook her head. “Your temperaments are quite similar. Both of you are gentle and sweet, but I think you are better than Miss Natalie!”
Hearing this, Edith felt even sadder.
It turned out that she had something in common with Natalie. Was this also the reason why Carlos had taken a fancy to
herself?
She didn’t expect Susan to say that she was better than Natalie. She had seen Natalie before and found her a real beauty! She couldn’t compare to Natalie, nor could she compare to Meggie. The thought of this frustrated her!
Edith said dejectedly. “Forget it. I’m going to work.”
“Mrs. Lawson, there is your favorite croissant.”
“I’m not in the mood to eat.”
Edith turned to leave with her shoulders dropping, but after a few steps, she turned back, picked up the croissant on the table, and took a big bite.
“It is hard to work with an empty belly. Why should I be sad and torture my stomach for a strange person? I should eat. drink, have fun, and live a free and easy life. And get those people bugging me out of my mind.”
Susan didn’t know what Edith was muttering, but when she saw her pouting angrily, full of vigor, Susan could not help laughing.
In her eyes, Edith was kind–hearted, and her anger came and went quickly. This kind of person was the best.
It was good that Edith quickly let go of the pent–up emotion. It was a great blessing for Mr. Lawson to find such a girl!
Edith pulled herself together and went to work. She did not expect that Robert would come in person in the morning.
As soon as everyone saw him, they all exclaimed excitedly.
Mr. Britton…
He was a big shot in Caurtine and the heir of a real estate tycoon. He was romantic
Unlike Simon, a playboy who spent almost every day with women, many of whom were small–time celebrities.
Mr. Britton was better. He seemed to have a standard for choosing a partner, but his girlfriends ranged from a young model to an employee. It seemed that no one could figure out what his preferences were.
Perhaps only he knew what kind of girl he was looking for.
Robert greeted everyone warmly as soon as he came in. Suddenly, he spotted a girl with a collar around her neck and her hair tied up high. She was carefully drawing with a tablet.
She looked so focused that it was as if the thing in front of her was the only one in her eyes.
She gave Robert a familiar feeling.
The girl gradually overlapped with the figure in Robert’s memory. His heart skipped a beat, and he stepped forward. “Miss. we seem to have met before.”
Hearing this, the girl raised her eyes and looked at Robert, a little flattered. She did not expect the boss’s younger brother to come over. Moreover, he had an extraordinary identity.
She immediately stood up in fear and trepidation. She was so nervous that she held her breath. “Mr. Britton…”
Looking at her, Robert found that even how she panicked was the same as the girl in his memory.
“Hello. What’s your name? Can I pick you up for dinner at six o’clock?”
The girl pointed at her nose and quickly realized she had become Mr. Brittons‘ latest target.
She knew that he was not serious about relationships. He would break up with her in less than a month.
But… how could a girl not be tempted to face such a handsome man?
Girls were always looking forward to blessings. What if she was the one to be blessed today?
The girl lowered her head shyly and said. “Okay…”
“You’re so sweet. He grabbed her badge and saw that her name was Summer.
“Summer? What a lovely name.”
Summer was thrilled to hear the compliment. This was the first time someone had praised her name.
Summer was born in the countryside to a farming family, hence her name. She personally hated it.
However, she didn’t expect Robert to like it.
“Thank you for your compliment, Mr. Britton.”
“Well, I’m here to look for someone. Where’s Edith?”
“Edith’s desk is inside… Summer wondered why he was looking for Edith.
Robert walked straight inside and grabbed the person who wanted to escape. “This company belongs to the Britton family. Do you think you can run away from me? I’ll bring my new girlfriend to play Texas Hold’em poker in the evening. You can choose whatever clothes you like. It’s on me,”
“Can… can I skip it? I don’t know how to play Texas Hold’em poker…” Edith said helplessly.
“Didn’t I hire a teacher for you? If you didn’t come, humph…” said Robert as a devilish smile appeared.
“If you don’t come, there’ll be some consequences Robert threatened in a domineering manner. Then, he turned away. blowing a kiss at Summer before leaving.
Edith sat in her seat in dejection. Feeling the hostile gazes from all directions, she was so self–conscious that she wished she
could find a hole to hide in.
She was already in a bad mood but was even more upset now.
How could she have a foothold in the company? What would her colleagues think of her? They would think she had relied on a man to get to where she was now.
Edith felt like crying from anger. The sadness consumed her strength and made her have a constant compulsion to eat…
When it was time to get off work in the evening, everyone else left, leaving only Summer and Edith.
Summer looked at Edith nervously and said. “You seem very familiar with Mr. Britton. Have you known each other for a long time?”
“I don’t know him!” Edith barked.
“Are you also Mr. Britton‘ ex–girlfriend?” Summer asked curiously.
“No, I have nothing to do with him. By the way, do you know how to play Texas Hold’em poker?” Edith asked curiously.
In the end, Robert still took them to Royrd Bar, which he frequented.
Everything was so familiar inside the bar.
