Chapter 21
#Chapter 21: Lace and Champagne
Something was a bit uncomfortable about the way that Jenifer looked at me when she poked her head in through the open door. Her smile was warm and affectionate when she looked at Nathan, but when her eyes slid over to me, it felt as though her face stiffened and went cold
Maybe she’s just protective, I thought to myself. Nathan was basically her brother, after all.
“It’s time to go,” she repeated, looking back at Nathan. “Hurry up. Mom and dad are waiting.”
“Right.” Nathan nodded, the blush on his cheeks from looking at me fading away. He cleared his throat and turned to look at me one last time, and his face went red again. “I’ll be waiting for you downstairs if you need to finish up here.”
I nodded. “I won’t be long.” I replied. I watched as Nathan scurried off through the door, leaving Jenifer and me alone. I shot her a warm smile, then turned to the
mirror to finish fixing my hair. “Thank you for letting me borrow your dress, by the
way.”
Jenifer shrugged. “I don’t wear it. You can keep it.”
I raised my eyebrows. “Really?” I asked, and Jenifer nodded as she inspected her
fingernails. “Thank you. That’s really kind of you.”
There was a long silence while I fixed my hair in the mirror. I had never been
someone who was very good at doing my hair, and so I was struggling to put up into a nice-looking half bun. Suddenly, Jenifer sighed and walked over to me. She swatted my hand away and then finished my hair for me.
“T-Thanks,” I said, managing a weak smile.
Jenifer said nothing. While she worked on my hair, I looked in the mirror and still
felt as though this dress was too small and delicate.
“Are you sure it’s okay if I wear this?” I asked. “It’s so pretty I’m worried that if I do
something clumsy, I’ll rip it.”

Jenifer, with a bobby pin in her mouth, slowly looked at me in the mirror. There it was again that strange look. It made me uncomfortable in an almost sickly way.
“It’ll be fine,” she said, taking the bobby pin out of her mouth. She stuck it into the half bun on the back of my head so hard that it poked into my scalp, and I winced. She didn’t seem to notice. When she was finished, she just shot me that same creepy smile again and stepped back.
“Well, if you really think it’s okay, then I trust you,” I said with a smile. I looked at my hair in the mirror, and realized that it looked quite pretty. Maybe Jenifer was at little odd, but she seemed to be trying her best to be nice. I thought that I should try to be nice to her, too, just like Nathan asked.
Jenifer and I headed downstairs, where Nathan was standing with his mother and his father. His mother was straightening his tie, while his dad was staring angrily off into the distance. When Colin saw me, he scowled and walked straight out the
door.
Nathan’s mother looked up at me for a moment with an unreadable expression on
her face, then followed him. Jenifer followed soon after, and now it was just Nathan
and me standing there.
“Your hair looks nice.” His face turned a little red again.
I smiled. “Your suit looks nice.”
There was a silence between us. Nathan really did look handsome, all dressed up in
a suit. At that moment, I felt inexplicably attracted to him. Before anything could be
said, however, he held out his arm for me to take.
“Let’s go.”
I swallowed and took Nathan’s arm. We headed outside where, much to my
surprise, people had already gathered for the ceremony on the sprawling lawn.
There was a large group of people gathered around the stage, and waiters walked around with trays of champagne..
As we walked over, Nathan took a glass of champagne and then handed me one as
well that looked different from the rest.

“Sparkling juice,” he said, winking. “It’s non-alcoholic.”
I felt myself blush a little. “Thanks.”
We continued walking over to meet up with Nathan’s family, who were already walking up onto the stage. As we started up the steps behind them, I instantly felt. myself freeze up beneath the cold glare of the partygoers.
Nooked out over the small crowd, and realized that my fears weren’t unfounded. There was a gaggle of girls standing off to the side, each dressed up in fancy dresses with their hair and makeup done. They were whispering to each other and swirling the champagne around in their glasses.
And they were looking right at me; they weren’t even trying to hide the fact that they were gossipping.
“Nathan,” I whispered, leaning over to him nonchalantly. “Who are those girls over
there? Don’t make it too obvious.”
Nathan’s eyes flickered over to the girls for a split second, then back to me. “The girl with black hair is Angela Morelli. I don’t know her friends’ names, but we went to school with them.”
I knew it. Angela Morelli… She was a popular girl in middle school and high school; before I left, at least. She was always the prettiest, smartest, and most talented girl with the cutest boyfriends. She never liked me.
“They’re definitely talking about me,” I whispered, trying to keep my gaze averted to the ground and not look at them. “This dress does look ridiculous on me, doesn’t it?”
“Olivia.” Nathan squeezed my arm. I looked up at him with wide eyes to see that he was giving me a stern gaze, “You’re supposed to be the Luna now. The Luna wouldn’t be wasting her energy on high school bullies.”
I nodded, feeling embarrassed by my own childishness. “You’re right,” I said quietly, hoping that my face didn’t just turn beet red in front of everyone. “It’s silly of
me to-”
“Suddenly, Colin held his champagne class up and tapped it loudly with the side of

a knife. The sound rang out across the lawn and caught everyone’s attention. The mingling partygoers fell silent and gathered closer to the stage, looking up at Colin expectantly.
“Thank you all for coming.” Nathan addressed the crowd with a warm smile, which was such a far cry from the way that he always looked at me. If no one knew that he was so hateful toward me just now in the foyer, they would certainly think that Colin was the perfect, shining picture of a warm and fair Alpha.
If only they knew what he really did all those years ago, I thought to myself.
All of a sudden, I felt Nathan’s arm unwind from around mine and move instead to a different area of my b*dy: my waist..
My face got even more red as his arm sl*pped around me and pulled me close, holding me tight. I swallowed nervously and looked up at him to see him smiling out at the crowd, an even more perfect picture of an Alpha than his father.
His eyes
flickered down to me, and smile turned warm.
I couldn’t decide which feeling was more potent: the gentle smile on Nathan’s face, or the way that the crowd was staring daggers at me.
