Chapter 19
#Chapter 19: The Truth About My Wolf
My dad and I were evicted from the pack when I was just fifteen.
Most kids shifted for the first time at age sixteen, so when I left with my dad, neither Nathan nor I had ever shifted yet. On my sixteenth birthday, however, like clockwork, I finally shifted.
When I shifted into a wolf with golden fur, though, my dad’s eyes widened.
“Olivia, promise me you won’t shift in public,” he said. He made me promise, but I didn’t ever get the chance to find out exactly why. I had a feeling that my wolf might have been special somehow, though.
But I didn’t tell Nathan this. Not yet, at least. If I did eventually shift again and my wolf wasn’t anything special, I didn’t want to let anyone down – especially not Nathan.
“You shifted before, right?” Nathan asked.
I nodded. “A few times,” I replied quietly. “But when my dad died, I think my wolf went into hiding. She’s been dormant ever since.”
Nathan’s face fell slightly. “Oh… And you don’t feel your wolf’s presence at all?”
I shook my head, then furrowed my brow. “No. Well… Lately, since I found out I was pregnant, I guess I can feel it just a little. But it’s hardly more than a spark. I don’t know if it’ll ever really show itself again… I hope you don’t look down on me for that.”
My childhood friend looked at me for a moment, then vigorously shook his head.” Of course not,” he replied gently. “It’s not like it’s your fault. You went through something really traumatic… It happens sometimes.”
Nathan’s words were a comfort, and I couldn’t help but smile a bit.
“So,” Nathan continued, looking a little excited, “what does your wolf look like? Does it look the way that we imagined when we were kids?”
When Nathan, Alvin and I were kids, we used to dream about what our wolves would look like when we turned sixteen. Of course, everyone did that as kids and

often imagined that their wolves would be more rare or special than the rest.
But somehow, despite my wolf going dormant, she did wind up being different thanks to the color of her fur.
I felt my face go a little red. “It has golden fur,” I replied, feeling a little embarrassed that my wolf stood out so much.
Nathan’s jaw dropped. Suddenly, he jumped up. I watched in confusion as he ran into the other room, and I heard his voice echo as he shouted to me from the other
room.
“You know, that’s really rare,” he called. I could hear him rifling through something, and I scrunched up my nose as I got up and followed him. As it turned out, he was rummaging through a cabinet in the living room.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
Nathan grinned and retrieved a small shoebox from the back of the cabinet. He carried it over to me and set it down on the table, then took the lid off to reveal that the box was full of memorabilia from our childhood.
My eyes widened. Inside the box were old Polaroid photographs, rocks and seashells that we collected as kids, friendship bracelets, and drawings. I reached my hand out to touch these relics of our past, but before I could, Nathan suddenly withdrew one particular drawing and set it down in front of us on the table.
It was a drawing that I remembered us making together, crudely drawn out of crayon, of what we imagined our wolves to be.
I had to laugh.
“I really thought mine would be purple,” I said with a chuckle.
Nathan laughed as well. “I thought mine would be green. Imagine that. A green
wolf.”
I couldn’t help but smile as we looked down at the drawing. Suddenly, Nathan looked up at me with a sincere expression on his face.
“You know, maybe it’s a good thing that your wolf is dormant,” he said quietly. ”

‘here has been a rise in poachers, after all. With such a rare pelt, it could be really langerous for you.”
I pursed my l*ps. “What about your wolf?” I asked.
A smirk came across Nathan’s face. “During the hunt on Full Moon Day, I’ll show you,” he said, his blue-green eyes flashing with mischief. “But until then, I think it’s more fun to make you wait.”
Sticking my tongue out, I punched my friend on the arm. But then I had a thought..
“What should I wear, anyway?” I asked. “I guess I would need to dress up in a specific way since we’re supposed to be mates, and you’re the Alpha and all.”
Nathan nodded. “I’ll take you to see my mom tomorrow,” he replied. “She’ll know what the Luna should wear.”
The next day, Nathan and I arrived at his parents’ mansion.
The mansion was situated at the nicest point in town, and looked down over the entire town. It was incredibly rare that we ever went there as kids, and I always wondered why since the property was massive and beautiful. My aunt’s villa was pretty too, but Nathan’s parents’ mansion was a whole lot nicer.
However, I quickly began to realize that the reason behind why we never went there to play was the security. It took us several layers of guards just to get in through the front gate, who still looked at us suspiciously despite the fact that they
knew who we were.
“Man,” I said as we drove up the long driveway to the mansion, “there’s a lot of
security, isn’t there? I don’t remember it ever being quite this bad.”
Nathan bristled as we pulled up to the mansion. “My dad has definitely increased. his security, but I think you’re just not remembering fully,” he said. “It’s always been. like this. Why else would we have spent our days playing at your aunt’s villa if we could have been here instead?”
“I guess you’re right,” I replied. Nathan parked the car out front, where there was a large circular drive with a massive fountain in the middle. We both got out and
headed inside, and I noticed even more security patrolling the property as we walked up the front steps.

I couldn’t help but notice that the security guards were giving me especially d*rty. looks, either. Something about it made me feel more uneasy than I should have felt. If security was here to keep us safe, then why were they looking at me like I was a
traitor?
When we opened the door, Nathan called out.
“Hello?” he said, his voice echoing in the large hall. “It’s Nathan and Olivia!”
There was a silence, followed by the sound of footsteps pounding across the creaky wooden floors.
Then, like a ghost, a pale young girl with black hair in a white dress suddenly burst out into the hallway through a large set of double doors. She stopped in her tracks, grinning widely at Nathan, then ran up to him and threw her arms around his n*eck.
“I’ve missed you so much!” she exclaimed, k*ssing his cheek.
Over his shoulder, though, I swore I saw her giving me a disdainful look.
Who was this girl?
