Dweller

Chapter 17

It was now the next day and I was walking back to the base. I would be meeting the kids that were accompanying me on this mission. I would have a couple of hours to talk with the children and get to know them and their specialties before we could go. Not knowing anything about the people you would be working with is really dangerous and it is usually nice to know a bit before you could trust them enough with a task.

As I walked into the bosses room, I saw the five kids I would be working with. Sam was also going with us but I knew he wasn’t going to be here until we were ready to leave. Once I walked into the room, they came in front of me and lined in a horizontal line. They went down the line and introduced themselves and what they were good at.

“My name is Falo, I’m seven years old, and I’m the best at my age with hand to hand combat.” The small boy at the end of the line cheerfully spoke starting first. He was the smallest boy in height but he definitely looked to be the strongest out of all of them. He stands tall with his short flowy hair covering most of his round face, his brown eyes blending in with his long bangs. His black T-shirt and knee high pants follow the same uniform as the other boys around here.

Next was a younger looking girl who looked confident and looked straight at me as I walked over to her next. She was wearing a long thin tan skirt with a white shirt. Her hair was back in a messy long pony. “I’m Maddy Ma’am, I’m nine years old, and I’m good at being stealthy.” Right after her the next kid goes.

“I’m Secle, I’m sixteen years old, I’m good at pickpocketing, but that's it.” She says with a hint of disappointment in her voice. I would comfort the young girl but that's not my job, I’m supposed to be mean and be able to access where they needed to work on so this mission will also be good for them.

The girl was wearing similar clothing as Maddy. However she was wearing a small bandana and her arms were covered in bandages. She also had a low bag that tied around her waist.

“I’m Jason, I’m 5, and I’m good with a bow.” Spoke a short kid with a toothless smile. He had a quiver on his back along with his bow in hand. Confidently gripping it close to him.

“I’m Blar, I’m 5, and just joined so I’m not particularly good at anything but I do run fast.” Said the final girl. She wore a brak black shirt with short brown pants. Her hair was short and didn’t even pass her shoulders.

I nodded quickly thinking over everything the kids told me. Falo great at hand to hand combat, Maddy is stealth, along with Secle being good with lock picking. Maddy and Secle would make a good team in the future and Falo would be good at protecting them if anything became too bad. Jason and Blar would also be good together, if only Blar knew how to use daggers.

“Alright everyone,” I start finally speaking up. “I want Maddy, Secle, Falo, and Jason to all go work together as a team and go practice and when I go see you I want you to tell me what would be the best way to take down a group of mercenaries, together. Go now.” I speak in a ruff tone leaving no room for arguments or complaints. All four of them slowly leave the room; they look over their shoulder one last time looking at Blar before they leave.

“Now Blar you said you just recently joined and that you're good and running. Correct?”

“Yes Ma’am.” She quickly says.

“Hmm do you have any experience holding or using a dagger?” I question thinking about how the best way to teach her using one would be. I had a feeling this girl never used one judging by how she said she could only run fast.

And my suspicions were then correct when she answered. “You would be correct Ma’am. I’ve seen other kids using them but I've never used one myself.”

“Good” I say with a growing smirk. I loved teaching people how to use daggers. Seeing as how it was my primary weapon, I knew I would quickly become fond of this kid.

“Let's go teach you how.” I say before we walk outside.

I spent the next couple of hours teaching her, and I also periodically checked in with the other four kids. They were doing amazing. They had come great together as a team. They had figured out many effective ways of taking down a group of people. In many different situations.

Blar had also come along nicely, she had quickly come along on how to use a dagger, he had learned only a couple of basic moves, but for her first time holding one it was going great. We even tried to implement her speed into it. However that didn’t go so well so we left that for later and would just stick to using the dagger normally.

Eventually, two hours in I made all five of the kids come together and work as a group. It took some time for the kids to figure out how to include a new person but after twenty minutes and some help from me they had figured it all out.

“Alright everyone.” I called out, grabbing their attention and bringing it to me. “I want to try something else. We only do it once, then you can take a break so we can leave.” I start out as they all come to me. “I want each and everyone of you to try and attack me. Of course we won’t be going in to kill but you can use weapons. Is everyone ready to start? Oh one more thing I will only be defending.”

I say a grin is wide on my face, I’m not even going to hide my enjoyment that is going to come, but to destroy these kids as well as see how good they’re. In the corner of my eye I see Sam leaned up against a tree. Smirking as well finding my enjoyment and tormenting these kids is hilarious.

“You want to join in here Sam, or are you going to stay and keep smirking like that.” I say half threatening but the smile on my face is giving away what I really feel.

“Oh I would never let you take away your fun.” He says raising his hands up in a form of surrender.

“Hmm” Is all I say before I return my full attention to the kids. They are now prepared and are ready to fight. They get into position and smile at what I am seeing. This will be a lot of fun.
