Chapter 20
Epilogue
~Present~
"You're insane!" Adam snapped at Sarah. "I'm not going to kill myself, or anyone else, for that matter!"
"Don't you understand!?" Sarah raised her voice, standing off her seat. "You have no other choice! You've kissed her, Adam! Which means that you have opened your heart and mind to her!"
"Then I... I have to die before she gets the chance to make me kill someone!"
"Are you mad!" Itsuki spoke up. "You're not doing that! We'll find another way!"
"THERE'S NOTHING ELSE I CAN DO!" Adam shouted. "The last part of the poem or prophecy or whatever the shit it is says that all hell would break loose! If I can die and not allow this to happen, then I will!"
"That doesn't matter! She will wait another century for another doppelgänger." Itsuki reasoned. "How many souls has she, anyway?"
"She already has two." said Sarah. "Those things in the glass-made jar... They were two... Adam's the last."
"I can't... STOP IT! I DON'T KNOW!" Adam shouted.
"Stop what?" Sarah asked.
Adam gave her a confused glance. "I don't know." He muttered, really meaning it. Because those harsh word had come out of his mouth without his own control. "If these things that you're saying is true... I... I need to stop her."
"And you will." Sarah confirmed in encouragement. "But not like this, without planning. And definitely not alone."
"She's right, mate." said Itsuki, still frowning. "We're in this together."
"STOP IT!" Adam shouted again.
Sarah and Itsuki looked sideways at each other in confusion, for they knew something was wrong in Adam's mind and that he definitely was fighting something by his own in his own head.
"Look," Sarah started again. "We'll find a way. I'll go to college now and bring a few books, seeing if there's anything in there telling how we could give an end to this myth. All you have to do is rest, Adam."
She then stood up and looked over at Itsuki before continuing, "I might take long. You have to make sure Adam doesn't leave this place... It's a full moon tonight."
And without any further ado for more words or explanation, she left the house, locking two times just to make sure.

"Where is it? Where is it!?"
Sarah was doing anything in her power to search for the book, and the fact that the night had fell upon them made it easier for her to sneak around every corner of her college.
Her breath came in short gasps and her mouth tasted of salt and blood. She had been running for too long, her steps pounding in time with her heartbeat.
She jumped out of her skin from horror when she heard the door to her classroom open. She turned around quickly and looked over the door, but then smiled in relief when she spotted her Mythology Professor.
"Professor! I need your help!" She said, looking hopefully at the man before her, as he walked closer to her.
"What's wrong?" said the man when he finally reached her.
"The myth of Irene, sir. The servant of Hades?" Sarah told him.
"What about her?"
"Sir, I was wondering... How can you give an end to the Myth? There's always a way, as you've said before... How can we destroy Irene?"
By that, Professor Shane's face completely changed, getting sterner by the moment, his brows forming a dark frown.
"What do want that for?"
"I... I'm just curious to know."
"Well, your curiosity could wait util next class." He said. "Why are you really hear for?"
"You wouldn't believe me if I said."
"You'd be surprised." said the Professor reassuringly. "Try me."
Sarah kept silent for a few moments before saying, "Are you a true believer, Professor?"
"Oh, but the real question is," He grinned. "Are you?"
"I am." said Sarah, but Professor Shane shook his head.
"If you were, you wouldn't have come here." said Professor, receiving a confused glance from Sarah. "If you truly believed in the under world, the world of the dead, and believed in Hades... You would've known how mighty and powerful he is... Both him, and his immortal and loyal servant."
"I don't understand..." Sarah spoke hesitantly, confused.
"Of course you don't." He scoffed. "I wouldn't expect a stupid human such as you to understand this."
"Wh-what!?" Sarah took slow and careful steps backwards, and at last narrowed her eyes at the man before him. "Irene."
The man smirked. "Surprise!"
"What have you done to Professor Shane!?"
"I'm not entirely sure if you really want to know what happened to him." Irene spoke in the body and voice of the professor. "One might come to think that you're a smart girl, figuring all of this by yourself. But no... You're a stupid girl. How naïve can you be, thinking that you can defeat me and stop me after thousand years of planning."
Sarah was taking steps backwards when the man who was under Irene's control started walking toward her in a dangerously slow pace.
"The thing is, even if you did stop me, you still couldn't save Adam."
"What do you mean!?"
"Adam's already under my completion. He's already done the next step and all he needs to do is to present his soul to me."
"The next step..." Sarah muttered in horror. "He couldn't have–"
"–He couldn't have killed anyone?" He scoffed after completing Sarah's sentence.
"Who!?"
"Let's see..." Irene acted as if she was thinking. "Who was the closest person for him to kill? Someone who wouldn't fight back, afraid to harm his own friend."
Horror rushed all over Sarah's body when all she could think about was Itsuki...
"No." He muttered, her eyes getting drown in fear.
"Oh, but I have a better question!" He said, getting so close too close to her. "Who do you think is gonna die next?"
***
Irene knew exactly where to go now that she was back in her own body and she knew exactly what to do.
With King Louis it was easy, because he was so soft and simple that he killed his own mother in a heartbeat, killing himself not too long after, presenting his soul to Irene.
With Scott English, even though it took a bit longer to gain his trust, was easy at the end when he wanted to kill someone. Because his heart was harmed enough as it was. And he killed himself with no further ado.
But there was this feeling inside Irene that told her Adam was different from all of them since the first time she met him. There was something about his soul that made it feel so pure. So pure that in some unknown way was making Irene weak.
She didn't know how and what Adam was doing to her, but in some ways inside her heart it felt right... Because it felt warm.
But she couldn't back down now, because of those anonymous feelings. She knew that Adam had killed someone; she could feel it. And that had made a connection between them which helped Irene to locate Adam. And so she went there.
She finally spotted him... Standing at the edge of a cliff... Staring down at it...
The moon was full although covered and embraced by clouds. Dark clouds which were performing a storm as lightening hit against the grey sky.
So by that, she walked careful steps toward Adam.
"You're here." said Irene.
"And so are you."
Irene walked closer to him.
"Do you know what you have to do?" She asked, gently placing her hand on his right shoulder.
Adam was still looking down the cliff, but at last, he answered. "Yes, I know what I have to do."
Irene smiled faintly before saying, "Then do it."
And the next moment, before she could know what was happening, Adam had turned around in a heartbeat, stabbing Irene with a knife in her stomach.
"URGH!" She screamed. As she was about to fall to the ground, Adam quickly took ahold of her waist and forbid her to fall.
"I know what I have to do. I know that I have to destroy you."
"You're a fool!" Irene forced a dark laughter. "A knife can't kill me. Not that, or any sort of weapon. Set me on fire, take out my heart... I would still be alive."
"I know. Which is why I'm not doing any of them." A thunder roared and shook the sky.
"You couldn't–"
"–Oh, yes I could." Adam nodded his head while staring at her big blue eyes. "Sarah had borrowed that book weeks ago and wasn't aware that she had it in her house."
"Smart girl... Although it's a pity that she's gone now."
"Wh-what?"
"Sarah's gone... Forever."
Now filled by rage, Adam shrieked and stabbed Irene again, weakening her.
"Sad thing you're gonna die along with her." He muttered. "Because I know how to kill you now... How to end this... I knew that to make a fake connection with you, I had to kill a snake, so you would've thought that I'd made it to the next step."
"You did... What!?" Irene was now starting to believe that Adam had figured it out... Figured how to end it all...
"I killed a snake." Adam repeated himself. "You know what that means, don't you?"
Irene kept quiet, so Adam continued,
"And I saw what was required next... The souls of the past..." And by that he fished into his pocket and took out something.
It looked like a mass of blue gas making two globs which were suspended on Adam's palm.
"How did you–"
"–We don't have time for explanation."
"But you're missing something." Irene said wittily, even though she was weak now. Adam gave her a questioning look, so she continued. "You have to die. You have to sacrifice yourself." She laughed. "You're trying to kill me to save your own life. But you're being stupid... Because you have to die either way. It's really funny."
"No... What's funny is that you think I'm doing this to save myself. But you're wrong... I have nothing left to lose. Nothing, but a life that can be the reason to save everyone."
"What... NO! DON'T DO IT–!"
But it was too late, because Adam had jumped off the cliff with Irene still in his arms.
The storm was tearing apart the sky as the dead flee to walk the night, because Adam had marked and endless life.
They say that men are marvelous creatures. Give them wings and they would want to tear the sky. Give them immortally and they would kill everyone to free them from the mortal world. Give them anything in your power, but they would still seek for more.
But give them a heart and a pure soul, and they would make you feel loved. They can make you so happy that you would want to fly. They can make you feel like you are meant to live forever. They can make you feel as if you have it all.
Adam had a pure soul and most definitely that warm heart, overwhelmed in kindness. It's true that he wanted a perfect life, and that he dreamed about being rich or having a woman he could love.
But life isn't about what you like or even what you want.
Life is about what you can do.
We all die one day, one way or another. So it's better if we do the best we can, for the people we care about.
Because life is short, and death is close.
