Chapter 24: I Love the Father of My Child
Matthew wasn’t able to dodge and Dolores fell into him.
Her forehead smacked painfully into his chin and her lips brushed against something stiff protruding from his body. The feeling
was familiar, yet distant.
Dolores, stunned for a moment, quickly got up when she came to her senses. Then she realized her lips touched his Adam’s
apple... She pressed her head against her forehead in pain and her face was burning hot from her blushing.
The contact also dazed Matthew and he slowly looked up at her. “If I’m a pervert, then what do you think you are?”
Before Dolores could reply, he sat up slowly, purposefully adjusted his collar, and touched the position where Dolores had kissed.
He laughed out loud. “We’re husband and wife. You can tell me directly if you want to kiss me. I’m not so petty.”
Dolores was speechless. Did he really think she wanted to kiss him? It was an accident!
“I don’t want to kiss you!” Dolores whipped around her head and quickly left the living room.
Matthew sat on the sofa, upset by what she said, and called after her sarcastically. “Then who do you want to kiss?” He scoffed.
“The man who impregnated you?”
It suddenly exposed the fear and shame with all their glory. She didn’t want to talk about how she became pregnant. But the stiff
manner which Matthew said ripped her heart open painfully. She was shattered,, but she maintained a strong front.
“Of course. I love the father of my child.”
‘God, this woman is something!’
“Ms. Flores, have you forgotten that you owe me something?” Matthew stood up, smoothed out his shirt, raised his head slowly,
and looked at the petrified Dolores. “I need a translator. Come to the office to work from tomorrow onward.”
That was all he wanted for the land contract. It was for the better, as she would repay him for the land contract and wouldn’t owe
him a favor.
“Okay,” she replied, then pushed open the door to her room.
Her face grew hot when she thought about what happened. She didn’t leave her room again until Coral informed her that dinner
was ready, worried that she would run into Matthew. Even then, she really didn’t want to leave her room.
Matthew was already at the dining room table as Coral served dinner. Dolores walked over and ate, only looking at her food,
refusing to look in Matthew’s direction.
The atmosphere in the dining room became so tense Coral couldn’t accept their behavior. They were husband and wife, but they
were behaving like strangers. She brought over a plate of roaster broccoli and placed it in front of Dolores.
“Master likes to eat this,” she whispered.
Matthew’s palette preferred bland dishes and vegetables. Coral was very familiar with what he liked to eat because she’d been
taking care of him for a long time. Dolores was stupefied and didn’t understand what Coral meant. She was thinking since he
liked to eat that dish, then Coral should have placed the dish in front of him.
Coral glared at her and signaled her to serve Matthew the vegetables. Dolores saw and realized what Coral meant. It took
Dolores so long to understand that Coral worried she’d have to glare forever.
Dolores had no choice but to serve Matthew the vegetables and placed them on his plate. Matthew looked up and Dolores
smiled. She couldn’t help it, as Coral was pushing her. Coral just wanted to see them happily married like the late madam
wanted.
Matthew slowly picked up the roasted broccoli and waved it in front of his nose. “Coral always knows what I like to eat.”
Coral laughed. “Missus will understand in the future, she just arrived and is still learning.”
Coral changed the way she addressed Dolores. In the past, she would address her as Ms. Flores. Though Coral wasn’t happy
about Dolores not coming home for the night, she was someone who Madam Nelson picked for the young master. She naturally
wished their relationship strengthened so as not to disappoint the late madam.
Dolores choked when she heard Coral addressing her as the missus and lowered her head even more. She quickly finished her
food and didn’t even finish her water. “I’m done, please enjoy your meal.” She went back to the room after she excused herself.
“What’s the matter with her?” Coral asked, surprised.
Matthew stared at Dolores’ slim back and with a sinister grin. “She must not be used to your peacemaking.”
Coral sighed. “Wasn’t it all for you?” She turned to leave.
Only Matthew remained in the spacious dining room. The light from the overhanging chandelier glittered and encompassed him.
He picked up another piece of broccoli and slowly chewed on it...
*****
Dolores left the house as Matthew was heading to work. Since she agreed to work at the company, she had to make a trip to the
restaurant to quit the job.
As she was changing her shoes, Coral approached her, “You’re going out?”
Dolores nodded.
“Come home early and don’t spend the night out. You are a married woman.” Coral reminded her.
“I won’t,” said, putting on her shoes and leaving.
She took a taxi to the restaurant as there wasn’t a public bus service where the villa was.
Dolores had to take a leave of absence after she started working there and now she was going to resign.
The manager was extremely upset. “Why did you apply for the job when you weren’t committed to working here? You’re really
inconveniencing us.”
Dolores was very apologetic. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.”
The manager was sullen, but before she could speak, a member of the waitstaff walked in to say the amount of customers
overwhelmed them with work.
The manager looked at Dolores. “Help us out today and you may leave after the rush hour.”
“Okay.” Dolores agreed out of professionalism.
Dolores went to change into her uniform. They were tremendously busy that day.
“Take these to room 88,” the chef told Dolores when she went to pick up the dishes.
Dolores nodded and placed the plates onto her serving tray and proceeded to the room.
With one hand balancing the tray, she used the other hand to open the door. The room was lit brightly, spacious, and private.
Only two people sat at the round redwood table and she knew one of them, Matthew.
It stunned both of them to see each other.
Kenneth Tyrone, the head of HSBC, was discussing something with Matthew and stopped when the door to the room opened.
Dolores lowered her head and served the plates on her serving tray.
“The waitresses at Lan-Kwai are getting increasingly younger.” Kenneth smiled and looked at Dolores from top to bottom.
Dolores felt violated and tried to leave after serving the plates, but Kenneth stopped her. He looked at Matthew and smiled
mischievously.
“Let her stay to serve us wine.”
Matthew forced his smile to conceal his displeasure. “Mr. Tyrone, are you aware of what we are discussing?” Matthew then
looked up eagerly at Dolores. “We don’t need you.”
Dolores left quickly with her serving tray.
Abbott was standing behind Matthew and frowned at the appearance of Dolores. Why was she working there? How would
people feel about her working there if they knew about her relationship with Matthew? How would that affect Matthew’s
reputation? Abbot’s disdain for Dolores increased several notches.
“Lan-Kwai Restaurant really knows how to improve their business. The food is delicious and now the waitresses are increasingly
attractive. Just like that waitress a moment ago. Her skin is fair like snow-white and her waist is so slim I could grab it with one
hand—”
“Mr. Tyrone, let me serve you wine.” Abbott quickly interrupted him.
Kenneth realized Matthew’s expression darkened and quickly laughed. “I digress.”
Dolores let out a long sigh after exiting the room. She’d never expected to see Matthew so soon after he left the house that
morning.

The peak business period passed and the manager agreed to let Dolores leave. She changed out of the uniform and walked out
of the restaurant when she saw Abbott standing at the entrance. His expression was hostile.
He stared at her coldly. “Mr. Nelson is waiting for you. Let’s go.”
Dolores followed him out.
“Mom, I saw a dress at Channel. Can we go back and buy the dress for me after we eat?” Annabelle clutched Beulah’s arm and
walked over.
“Of course! My daughter should wear the best.”
The mother and daughter laughed gleefully as they walked toward Lan-Kwai Restaurant.
Dolores paused when she saw them.
