Book 1 of Alpha Wolf: Mate Mine

Chapter 26 ~ A Lost Howl

When Alpha Mirko was on his way to pay a visit to Lord Skull’s ex Alpha, his thoughts began to travel... a vortex of memories of his past, of his childhood... until the day he met his best friend....he called it the day of the Lost Howl...

..........Long time ago...in the wildest region of the Alakasian Mountains .......

............................

It was one of those nights were all the stars had disappeared and even the moon had decided to hide. A meandering mist was slowly invading the entire undergrowth; distant muffled sounds were the only sign of living creatures in that desolation. The ancient forest was like a network of intricate trunks and bushes, no trace of the human touch.

When a group of wolves passed nearby, all the hidden small animals fled in various frightened whines. The wolf who stood in front was a great majestic creature. He scanned the area around before choosing the safe path to follow as the rest of the pack, a mix of wolves and werewolves, followed right behind without questioning.

The last was the largest of all, the Alpha of the group; he was right at the end to ensure none of his members were left behind and also to better predict any attack from potential enemies. Dark as the night itself, it was hardly impossible to distinguish its shape, if it weren’t for its stormy eyes, bright as a lighthouse, absorbing the details of the surroundings, while its terrifying muzzle rose in the air to sniff occasionally and perceive any alien odours.

And at that precise moment, the massive black Alpha stopped suddenly with a snarl, causing an instant chain reaction, with all the other wolves stopping and creating an instant semicircle around his powerful figure. With a low growl, he jumped into the bushes and disappeared while his group patiently stood there waiting for his return, motionless like a group of sculptures.

The Alpha ran towards something that he had located in the deepest heart of wild nature.

His large features were smashing any sort of obstacle like a bulldozer. He was incredibly agile and fast, considering the large size and long fur.

As he approached the edge of a clearing, he slowed his pace. The scene he saw in front of him would have been unforgettable. His intervention would have been a crucial turning point in his and many other lives....

A medium-sized wolf barely stood up, with a huge grizzle bear that overwhelmed him with a promise of death and threatening snarls. The Alpha had also noticed a half-eaten human being lying a few meters away, with another smaller bear playing with what was left of it. It was difficult to detect the sex in all that mess of scattered flesh.

The grizzle bear had suffered several injuries, some deeper than others, however its size and ferocity were more developed than those of its opponent.

Anyone else might have assumed that a medium-sized wolf was strangely fighting a large grizzle bear, but the Alpha was not ‘anyone else’: he had immediately detected another werewolf over there, or to be precise, a child who had recently shifted.

Alpha thought that he was a 12-13 year old boy, considering the size. An average werewolf shift at the age of 14 while Alphas and Betas can manage to shift at 11-12 year old sometimes.

What Alpha could not yet know was that he was just an eight-year-old werewolf child who found himself forced to shift prematurely to save his human mother, gutted by the hungry bear.

When the Alpha decided to intervene, it was like watching a horror show. He looked like the devil’s personal killer beast, infallible and ruthless.

The bear turned its angry attention to this new potential prey, with a threatening snarl and furiously scratching its claws on the dry ground. The animal had no chance, and the Alpha killed him in a heartbeat, with a precise bite on his hairy neck.

As the bear’s dying breaths were dwindling and his heartbeat almost disappeared, the Alpha stared at the beaten werewolf in front of him. Shaking and growling, the newly shifted boy charged at him, with anger and despair in his bleeding eyes.

And what the Alpha did could be the craziest thing a werewolf could do when another werewolf attacks: he returned to his human form. And there he was, instead of a majestic legendary creature, there was another human child, naked and dirty.

His grey eyes were fixed on the wolf in front of him and his arms crossed.

“Stop!” He ordered with a powerful voice. No doubt he could kill the other werewolf even in his human form, but he decided to give him a chance.

When the other werewolf tried to stop and fell out of balance, they were only a few meters apart. The Alpha boy was watching him, with a thoughtful expression on his face. A red-eyed red wolf was a rarity, more like a legend; the stories whispered that only when a terrible event would occur, when the fear and pain were too unbearable, then your wolf will be a blood red.

“Shift back.” Another powerful order vibrated in the air.

When this time the wolf did not obey, perhaps because he could not shift back or simply because he did not want to, the Alpha boy approached the remains of the human and began to collect them without showing any emotion. The Alpha boy had ignored the other’s warning growls, giving him his back. Once the human was buried, the Alpha boy sat down and sighed, hands under his chin. Shortly thereafter he heard a rustle behind him and stinks of human, and to his surprise, a child, probably no older than him, sat next to him.

When the group of wolves reached the clearing in search of their Alpha, they found a strange surprise waiting for them: two small children sitting next to each other, facing a pile of ground. One boy was covered in blood, dirt and was shaking visibly and sobbing, while the other was completely motionless, one arm wrapped around the other’s shoulder. Nobody knew how long they remained in that position, there in the stormy nature, under the pouring sky.

When the Alpha child began to return to his pack, the smaller figure followed him without uncertainty ... And so they started...When one moved, the other would follow him. When one killed, the other would imitate. When one order, the other will execute.

And there, in the midst of the wild nature, far from humanity and modernity, from every possible comfort and safety, where animals and instincts dominated, there were two new brothers.

Their indestructible new bond born of spilled blood and lost howls....

Mirko shook his head, blinking his eyes a couple of times...he would never forget the day he saved and adopted Crucifero.
