Bitch: Transformation

Chapter 44 - Road Trip

The old Ford pickup thundered down the mountain. Apoc and I hidden under a tarp in the back. Tank wouldn’t get in with us, thankfully he was sitting up front with Alan and Red. The back window to the cab was open so I could hear them talking. The branches clawed at the sides of the truck and the antenna twanged when it would hit a lower hanging branch.

Red was still having a hard time wrapping his head around our reality, his questions became more of a rhetorical rant. “But why? Why would they do this to a young lady? What’s the point of destroying someones life? Just because they can? Just because they have the technology to do it, why would that ever make it right? What’s the point of it all? Will humans never learn that the ability to destroy doesn’t justify the destruction? What’s all this coming to?”

“You know as much as I do.”

Red just couldn’t believe it, “So what did she talk about with you?”

“Not much, it took me awhile to believe it.”

“That must be rough for her, I can’t even imagine. And the wolf too, is he human too?”

“Don’t know.”

“What a mind fuck. So where are we headed?”

The wind changed and I couldn’t hear Alan’s response, Red was doubtful. “You sure that’s a good idea? ... Alright it’s your nickel.”

The road stretched on away from the mountain. The tarp flapped a little in the breeze, and the thrumming of the road rolling away beneath us lulled me to sleep.

I woke up to the truck stopped and the sounds of a gas station. Apoc stirred, but didn’t awaken. It was warmer and the air was dry. I felt like we’d been driving all night. I was thirsty and wanted to pee. Guess I’d have to hold it.
