Chapter 25 - No No
Arlene climbed aboard.
She shut the door behind her.
I relaxed.
I heard it before I felt it.
My pee hitting the floor.
For a moment I thought I might be able to pretend it didn’t just happen. Not a lot, just a little came out anyway. Maybe, I rationalized, it could have been sweat.
Arlene didn’t see it right away, “Well I tried to cover my tracks as best I could...” and then she kinda trailed off quietly.
Apoc was staring at me.
Arlene was staring at me and my little puddle.
I hadn’t lost control of my bladder since I was... hell I couldn’t remember the last time. Three years old?
I glanced around trying to find somewhere to look that might make this all less embarrassing. Heaven help me, Miss Cleo had come around when the doors opened. Even she was looking down at me from her shelf. Her tail swishing with disdain.
I hung my head in shame.
Arlene opened her mouth to speak. Then closed it again. Then she said. “Well it’s good to know that I’m not the only one who’s scared.”
I wanted to die but there were no bottomless holes available. So I whined. And felt like I was blushing so hard my skin was on fire.
Arlene pulled out a couple paper towels and bent down to mop it up. She whispered, “It’s okay honey, the Sheriff scares the piss out of me too. You get a little older and sometimes all it takes is a good joke to have an accident.”
She continued, rising, “Besides you two have been cooped up in here for hours. I think it’s time for us to head out of town and find you both a tree in the woods. How’s that sound?”
I came forward and put a paw on her arm. I wrote again.
“Sheriff watches? Us? He watches us? And other guy? Which other guy?” I motioned to show where they were. Arlene peeked out the curtains at both.
She was thinking, “So they’re keeping an eye on us huh? I wonder why they are waiting. Maybe till we get out of sight? Maybe we all disappear this time for good?”
She stood there for a full minute, then said, “I have an idea.”
