Chapter BIT 61
Chapter 61
“What kind of family are you dealing with, Becky?” Jacob muttered as he watched Victoria’s back slowly disappear behind the door.
Rebecca just looked down at Lily’s face in silence. She felt very angry and helpless at the same time. “Um, Jacob…”
“Yeah?” Jacob turned, surprised.
“Um, could you go see Cathy for me?” Rebecca asked without looking at Jacob.
“What about Lily?” Jacob asked, confused..
Rebecca looked up and smiled. “I feel better already. I’ll take care of her.”
Jacob stared at Rebecca hesitantly for a moment, considering refusing her request, but finally, he nodded. “Okay, I’ll be right back.”
After Jacob left, Rebecca picked up the intercom.
“I need to leave the hospital early. Can you handle my paperwork?” she asked hastily. Shortly after, an on-duty doctor and nurse appeared to check her cesarean scar.
“Are you sure you’ll be okay recovering at home?” the doctor asked somewhat doubtfully.
Rebecca nodded quickly; she didn’t have much time. “Alright, don’t lift anything too heavy, and try not to run until your surgical scar is fully healed,” the doctor finally concluded.
Rebecca ordered an Uber, then carried Lily, and quickly left the hospital. She had deliberately sent Jacob away because after what happened to Cathy, the last thing she wanted was to put Jacob in the same position.
It took almost an hour until she finally arrived at JFK airport. She stood at the counter, randomly choosing the fastest flight, and got Boston as her destination. She paid in cash, avoiding digital traces as much as possible.
Throughout the flight to Boston, Lily slept soundly without any fuss. Rebecca leaned against the airplane seat, enduring the pain from her surgical wound as the effects of her pain medication began to wear off.

She knew her decision to go to Boston was impulsive, but she really couldn’t fight Victoria any longer. Maybe it was time to let go of Harvey so that Lily could live safely.
As the plane touched down in Boston, she felt a mix of relief and uncertainty. She clutched Lily tightly, feeling the weight of the new life she was about to embark on. She had no clear plan, only the instinctual drive to protect her daughter and start anew. Rebecca kept her head down at the airport, hoping to avoid unwanted attention. She made her way to the exit and hailed a cab, giving the driver the address of a modest hotel she had found online. The hotel room was small but clean. Rebecca set Lily down on the bed and took a moment to breathe.
She stared at her completely dead phone, with no intention of recharging it. She just wanted to disappear from the world for a while. She was fed up with Victoria and Alicia, but what disappointed her the most was Harvey, who couldn’t fight for their marriage. After ordering baby clothes, diapers, and milk online, she lay down on the bed and slept soundly for the first time in the past few days.
Despite Lily waking up multiple times during the night, the next morning Rebecca. woke up in a much better mood. Lily’s smile seemed to give her every reason to keep going. She enjoyed her first-day taking care of Lily without any disturbances from the outside world. However, at night, she couldn’t resist turning on her phone, which had been off all day.
As soon as her phone turned on, she felt sad seeing dozens of missed calls from Jacob. but none from Harvey. While she was staring at her phone screen, lost in thought, Jacob called again. Hesitantly, she swiped the green button and put the phone to her ear.
“BECKY! WHERE ARE YOU?” Jacob barked, sounding so worried that Rebecca felt guilty for lying to him.
“I’m in a safe place, Rebecca replied, almost whispering.
Jacob took a deep breath. “You didn’t even go back to your apartment. How could you leave without taking anything? Do you even have money, and what about Lily?” he asked impatiently.
Rebecca swallowed hard, realizing just how much Jacob cared about her. “I’m sorry, I just did what I thought I had to do. You shouldn’t be dragged into the drama of my life, so now just pretend you never knew me and continue your life as usual,” she said firmly. “I care about you, so you can’t just be selfish like that,” Jacob said just as firmly. Rebecca took a deep breath, suddenly reminded of Nicholas because Jacob’s attitude reminded

her of him. “I have to go, bye, Jacob.”
She quickly ended the call and tossed her phone onto the sofa. She covered her face. with both hands, all the events of the past few days reminding her of the first time Harvey divorced her. She wondered what Harvey was doing and if he had truly forgotten about her and Lily. Then, it all happened so quickly; her hand moved on its own to pick up her phone and dial Harvey’s number. To her surprise, the call connected.
Harvey’s voice came through the line, calm but tense. “Becky?”
She hesitated, almost ending the call, but finally spoke. “Harvey, it’s me.”
There was a long pause. “Where are you?”
“I’m safe, with Lily,” she replied softly. “I just… I needed your explanation. I’ve signed the divorce papers, but I still need to know the truth! You lied to me about the reason, didn’t you?” she asked in a trembling voice. “I know your stepmother is behind all of this, you don’t have to bother hiding the facts anymore!”
There was a long silence before he answered.
“She is my biological mother. I’ve done a DNA test, and my decision to divorce you has nothing to do with her. Take care of yourself and never come back to New York City.”
Rebecca felt like her body was floating. Harvey’s voice sounded so certain when he said all that as if he meant it.
“Wait!” she cried before Harvey could end the call. “What happened between us over the past year, was that real? Fine, forget about me, but what about Lily? She’s your daughter! Do you really not care about her?” she asked, holding back the tears that were about to burst.
“I have to go.”
Rebecca dropped her phone. She knew she shouldn’t trust what Harvey said, but for some reason, she started to believe that he might still love Alicia.
