the sterile smell of the hospital hit them immediately. They found Victoria’s

doar slightly ajar. Harvey hesitated then pushed it open. He found Victoria ng in bed, looking pale and fragile. When she saw Harvey and Rebecca, her eyes. kened with surprise and something that might have been relief.

Harvey you care, she said weakly.

Harvey walked over to her bedside, Rebecca following him.

How are you feeling. Mom?” he asked, trying to keep his voice neutral.

Victoria sighed, tears welling up in her eyes. I didn’t think I’d see you again. I’m so sorry for everything. Harvey. I just… I didn’t know how to let go.”

Rebecca watched the interaction, feeling a mix of sympathy and suspicion. She couldn’t shake the feeling that Victoria’s apology was too convenient, too perfectly timed.

“Mom, this has to stop, okay?” Harvey said, his voice firm. “You can’t keep trying to control my life. Rebecca and I are together, and that’s not going to change. You need to accept that.”

Victoria nodded, tears streaming down her cheeks. “I know, I know. I just want you to be happy, Harvey

Harvey glanced at Rebecca, who gave him a supportive nod. “We’ll give you some time to rest, Mom. We’ll talk more later.”

They left the room, walking down the corridor in silence. Once they were outside, Harvey let out a long breath. “What do you think?”

Rebecca shook her head. “I don’t know. It felt real, but it also felt like a charade. I’m not

sure.”

“Yeah,” Harvey agreed. “We’ll give her the benefit of the doubt for now. But we’re not staying longer than necessary.”

They visited Victoria at the hospital over the next few days while in Long Island City, making plans for their future. Harvey struggled to juggle his complicated emotions for his mother and his love for Rebecca.

One evening, as they were discussing their plans over dinner, Harvey’s phone buzzed with a text message. He glanced at it and froze, his face draining of color.

He handed her the phone, his voice shaking. It’s a message from an unknown number. Mary’s, You can’t run from your past. It’s all catching up to you.”

Rebecca’s eyes widened as she read the message. “What does that mean?”

Harvey shook his head, fear creeping into his voice. “I don’t know. But it sounds like someone knows about us leaving the city. Someone who doesn’t want us to be happy.” Rebecca’s mind raced. “Who could it be? Your mother?”

Harvey frowned, considering. “I don’t think so. This feels different. More sinister.”

They sat in silence, the weight of the mysterious message hanging over them. Just as they were about to discuss it further, Harvey’s phone buzzed again. This time, it was a picture message.

Rebecca’s hand flew to her mouth as she saw the image. It was a photo of them, taken through the window of the motel where they had stayed the night they left the city.

Harvey’s face turned ashen. “Someone’s been following us.”

Rebecca’s heart pounded in her chest. “What are we going to do, Harvey?”

He swallowed hard, his mind racing. “We need to find out who’s behind this. And we need to be careful. This isn’t just about my mother anymore. Someone else is involved, and they’re not going to let us go easily.

They stared at the picture in silence, knowing their decision to get back together was not approved by many people.

Harvey took Rebecca’s hand, his grip firm. “No matter what happens, we face it together.”

Rebecca nodded, then gulped nervously. “Do you think it could be Nicholas or Alicia? But they’re in jail…”

“I don’t know, but there’s always a possibility!
