Chapter BIT 41

Chapter 41

Rebecca took a deep breath. If she followed her desires, she knew she would have to accept Harvey back and give him a second chance, but fortunately, she was sane enough at that time. She shook her head slowly, “Before Alicia appeared and ruined everything, I had been fighting for your love for three years of our marriage and couldn’t get it. So I know quite well when it’s time to stop.”

Harvey glared in surprise. “But, Becky…”

Rebecca shook her head. “Do you love me?” Rebecca asked matter–of–factly.

Harvey was silent, he stared at him for a long time as if the question was difficult to

answer.

Rebecca snorted, smiling bitterly. “You still haven’t learned what love is, have you? I have to go, I’m sorry about your sister. Bye, Harvey.”

She dragged her heavy legs towards Nicholas‘ apartment which was a bit messy after the NYPD raid. She sat on the sofa in the living room, remembering how she and Nicholas used to spend time together and then burst into tears. She really regretted it because, behind all his lies, Nicholas was actually a man who really cared about her.

While she was packing her things, she found an incoming email from Lucy.

‘I don’t work for The Specters anymore. For a while, I’ll relocate to a secluded location because Alicia despises me and I’m scared she’ll exact revenge on me. Ma’am, take good care of yourself. I hope you discover your happiness. Thank you so much, Lucy!

Her feelings were much better after she left Nicholas‘ apartment. She looked for an empty apartment and found one in a location that was familiar to her.

“Rebecca? I mean Becky? Do you remember me?” said a man who had just finished putting up a banner in front of his cafe.

Rebecca frowned, and then her eyes widened. “Oh, God! Jacob? Right?”

Jacob smiled and nodded lightly. His eyes immediately fell on Rebecca’s two large suitcases. “Where are you going?” he asked curiously.

Rebecca pointed at the top of Jacob’s cafe. “I’m moving upstairs,” she said casually.

Jacob was surprised. “Oh hello, neighbor! Come on, I’ll help you, I also happen to live in

one of the units above,” he said as he pulled Rebecca’s suitcase. “Thanks, Jacob!” Rebecca exclaimed after they arrived in front of Rebecca’s new apartment unit.

“No worries! By the way, you were all over the news! When you were crying here that night I didn’t even recognize who you were. By the way, I’m sorry about what happened to you, I hope you don’t lose your hope,” said Jacob sincerely.

Rebecca smiled. “That’s very kind of you, thanks. See you!”

She closed the door and then sat on the floor. To be honest, she was not prepared to hear others discuss her troubles. Some of them focused on the accident and miscarriage she had, while others wondered how she was able to marry Harvey in the first place. They began discussing how she was a material lady who was eager to marry without love, which deeply pained her.

She locked herself up in her apartment for several days because she was afraid that journalists would look for her. She also deactivated her cell phone, losing several big deals. Everything was too much for her so she became overwhelmed.

One evening, as she was finishing up a video shoot, her phone buzzed with a call from Cathy.

“Hey, Becky,” Cathy said cheerfully. “How are you holding up?”

Rebecca smiled, grateful for her friend’s unwavering support. “I’m doing okay, Cathy. Just trying to stay busy.”

“That’s good to hear,” Cathy replied. “I was thinking, maybe we should go out for dinner tonight? Just the two of us. It might be good to get out and relax a bit.”

Rebecca hesitated for a moment, then nodded. “Yeah, I think I’d like that.”

They met at Jacob’s Cafe. As they enjoyed their meal, Rebecca felt a sense of normalcy returning. She laughed and chatted with Cathy, feeling a bit lighter than she had in a long time.

Cathy took a deep breath. “Is Harvey still trying to contact you?” she asked carefully. Rebecca shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know, I changed my number,” she said with a blank face. She always felt miserable every time someone mentioned that name. Her chest seemed to be filled with messy feelings. She wanted him but also felt guilty for putting his sister in prison. Even after it was all over, she didn’t feel at ease.

“I know it’s difficult to really live life as if everything is fine, but this concerns your career, I have to make sure you still want to work or not?”

“I might need to take a break for a few weeks and come back in a better mood. Can you take care of everything for me? I’ll just be here, maybe sitting by the window like this will become my new habit.”

Cathy reached across the table and squeezed Rebecca’s hand. “Of course, I’ll handle everything. Take all the time you need. You’ve been through so much, it’s only fair to give yourself a break.”

Rebecca nodded gratefully, feeling the weight of her recent experiences slowly lifting. After dinner, Cathy walked her back to her apartment. As they stood outside her door, Rebecca felt a twinge of uncertainty.

“Thanks for everything, Cathy. I really appreciate it,” Rebecca said softly.

“Anytime, Becky. Remember, you’re not alone. If you need anything, just call me,” Cathy replied with a warm smile.

Rebecca took a deep breath as Cathy exited her apartment. The silence was both soothing and disturbing. She decided to take a shower and let the warm water wash away the memories of her inner struggle. She then covered herself in a warm robe and sat by the window, staring out at the city lights.

Weeks turned into days, and Rebecca gradually began to find comfort in her new routine. She went to Jacob’s Cafe, where the friendly atmosphere and regular patrons made her feel comfortable. With his constant willingness to listen, Jacob grew to become a close friend.

One afternoon, as Rebecca sat by the window of the cafe, sipping her latte, she noticed a figure standing outside.

It was Harvey.

He looked hesitant, unsure whether to enter or not. Rebecca’s heart raced, but she steeled herself, determined to face him with the strength she had built over the past few weeks.

Harvey finally walked in, his eyes searching for her. When he spotted her, he approached with hope and regret in his face.

“Rebecca, can we talk?” Harvey asked, his voice filled with uncertainty.
