Chapter 9 How He Thought of Her
The driver was correct about one thing. Wesley was indeed the one who caused the injury on Layla’s lips.
But Wesley wasn’t Layla’s boyfriend.
Layla knew that Wesley didn’t have any feelings for her.
Layla knew that Wesley hadn’t felt anything for her in the past, and he wouldn’t in the present or future.
Suddenly, the phone rang. Seeing the caller’s number, Layla composed herself and pressed the answer button.
On the other end of the line, Zachary’s irritated voice came through. “We agreed that you would be home by ten o’clock, but it’s already eleven o’clock. Are you still fooling around with that despicable man? Layla, do you have any shame left?”
“I’m not with anyone else,” Layla retorted. She suppressed her grievances and explained, “There was a delay at the office. I’m already downstairs, and I’ll be home in five minutes. Are you hungry? Do you want me to bring you something to eat?”
Upon hearing this, Zachary’s irritation eased a bit, and he hung up the phone.
Layla glanced at the disconnected call and took out her mirror to touch up her makeup. She carefully applied layers of lipstick to conceal the cut on her lips.

convenience store.
As she approached her doorstep, Layla took out her key and opened the door.
As soon as Layla walked in, she saw Zachary sitting in the living room, staring at her intently. The intensity in Zachary’s eyes made Layla feel as if she was being scrutinized like a criminal.
After changing her shoes, Layla placed the food she bought from the convenience store on the table in front of Zachary.
“Zachary, you shall eat something.”
Zachary glanced at what Layla had bought, then focused his gaze on her face. “Take off the mask.”
Layla hesitated for a moment but didn’t move.
“I’m telling you to take off the mask.”
“What do you want to do, Zachary?”
“You’re already home. Why are you still wearing a mask?” Zachary said, seizing the opportunity when Layla wasn’t paying attention and forcefully removing her mask. When he saw Layla’s swollen lips, Zachary became enraged.
Zachary knocked over the food Layla had bought, looking at her with disgust, and said, “I felt guilty about what I said earlier, but now I realize, Layla, you don’t even deserve my guilt! You’re more despicable than I imagined!”
“Zachary, let me explain…”

“What do you want to say?” Zachary took a step back and avoided Layla as if he was avoiding some bacteria. “Do you want to tell me how you messed around with that scumbag? Or do you want to talk about how you’ll balance your time between
him and home?”
Layla looked at Zachary with tears in her eyes and said nothing.
She didn’t know how to tell her beloved brother that she had no
choice at all.
“Layla, our parents are dead, but I’m still here.” Zachary looked at Layla with bloodshot eyes as he said, “If you keep humiliating yourself like this. What do you think our parents would think? How can you face me?”
Faced with Zachary’s questions, Layla opened her mouth but found that her voice seemed stuck in her throat, and she could not speak at all.
“Can’t you just leave that man and live a normal life?” Zachary held her shoulders emotionally and said, “I’ve grown up. If you like money, I can make money to support you. If you need a man, I can find one for you. You…”
“Slap!” A crisp sound of a slap echoed. Both Zachary and Layla were stunned.
Layla couldn’t believe that her own brother, Zachary, could say such things to her.
Layla didn’t know how Zachary thought of her in his mind.
Layla wondered if Zachary only saw her as a shameless woman.
