Chapter 2 You Are Truly Despicable
When Layla woke up the next day, Wesley was nowhere to be found. Like always, he left a five–million–dollar check on the bedside table…
Layla got dressed, picked up the check, and headed to the living room. She took out her notebook from her bag and slipped the check inside.
As she flipped through the pages absentmindedly, she saw a series of checks tucked in one after another.
From as little as fifty grand to as much as five million dollars, Wesley had given her all these over the years.
She glanced around the lavish apartment that had consumed her time and youth for six long years. Finally, she closed the notebook and hid it under a cushion on the couch.
Putting on her backpack, Layla left without looking back.
She grabbed breakfast from a street vendor and returned to her old building apartment. Unlocking the door, she walked in.
Zachary Edwards was engrossed in playing video games on the sofa, not even bothering to look up when he heard the door
open.
Layla walked over and placed the breakfast on the table. “Got you a sandwich. I have a meeting at the hospital later. You’ll be home alone…”
Layla’s fingers trembled slightly, and she pressed her lips together. She stayed silent for a moment.
“I’m gonna go get changed.” She turned around, and in the next second, a loud crash echoed through the room as her phone case shattered on the ground.
“You’re a real piece of work.” Zachary’s spiteful words followed, and he threw the breakfast she just bought to the floor.
Layla stood still, her fingers tightening. She turned around and watched as Zachary limped away.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Layla’s voice remained calm, unfazed.
“None of your damn business!” Zachary didn’t look back, slamming the door shut behind him.
He used to be such a good kid until that accident messed him up. Now he’s all moody and weird, with a messed up leg from the crash.
That accident really messed up this poor kid’s life.
Layla crouched down and grabbed the dropped sandwich, taking a bite like it was no big deal.
Tears silently streamed down her face.
Zachary couldn’t stand her or anything she brought, thinking it was all
gross.
She changed her clothes and hopped on a bus to the hospital.
As she walked into the office, Layla overheard her coworkers talking about something. She barely caught Wesley’s name.
“Hey Layla, did you hear that Dr. Brooks is getting engaged to Wesley? You know Wesley, right? That hot, rich guy from Azure City!” Her coworkers gathered around Layla, chattering excitedly.
Layla looked up and saw Amy Brooks. People were crowded around her, and her face was beaming with happiness as they congratulated her.
Amy was a doctor, but she also came from a powerful family. Her mom was the CEO of a big company, and the Brooks family owned most of this hospital. Her dad was even the Deputy Mayor of Azure City.
Some people are just born lucky and different from the rest of
- us.
“I didn’t know,” Layla replied, her smile soft.
“Forget it, you’re always buried in books and don’t care about anything else. You probably don’t even know what Wesley looks like!” Her coworker grabbed her phone, searched for a picture, and showed it to Layla. “Here he is. Hottie, right?”
In the picture, he was wearing a fancy suit, with a cold, disdainful look in his eyes. Like he was born without any emotions.
Even though Layla had seen that face for a thousand days and nights, she had never seen any emotion other than icy detachment.
