Chapter 13 Expectations
“How old are you?”
“Thirty–three.”
“Thank you for your cooperation.”
After Layla finished recording, she checked the two of them again. They were all superficial wounds, not serious.
“Have a good rest. Don’t argue anymore. If there is anything wrong, press the bell on the bedside.”
Layla went out and stood at the door for a while. There was no more quarreling inside. Then, she went to the next ward.
After she made rounds of an entire floor, it was almost twelve
o’clock. She went to the bathroom, lifted her clothes, and looked
at the wound on her waist in the mirror.
The impact caused her waist to turn bruised.
A colleague passed by, saw the bruise on her waist, and exclaimed, “Layla, are you injured?”
“I am fine. It’s just a minor injury.” Layla put down her clothes to cover the bruise on her waist.
While washing her hands, the colleague said, “Have patients caused trouble again? It’s not easy to be a doctor.”
Chapter 13 Expect
Ivan looked up at her. “Why is your phone turned off?”
“I was doing ward rounds in the morning. I didn’t notice that my phone was turned off.”
“Oh, alright. I have a craniotomy this afternoon, and I want you to be my first assistant. You have to study hard.”
Layla was slightly taken aback. She said in surprise, “Mr. Hill, you let me be your assistant for such an important operation. I, I’m afraid…”
Ivan waved his hand. “Don’t worry. I believe in you. I have seen your hard work this year. You have performed very well both theoretically and experimentally. It will soon be the second semester. Don’t you want to be a real doctor?”
Layla bit her lip. Of course, she wanted to, but she was also afraid that she would make a mistake and affect the operation.
“I know what you’re worried about. Don’t be nervous. Just treat it like any other day in the laboratory. Besides, you’re only an assistant, not the one performing the surgery. If you get nervous even about this, how will you handle a surgical scalpel in the future?”
His words reassured Layla. She raised her head, and her eyes became firm. “I see, Mr. Hill.”
Ivan nodded in satisfaction. “Okay, go back and get ready. Wait for my notice at two o’clock in the afternoon.”
“Okay.”
Layla stepped out of the office and drew a deep, soft breath. All this time, she had been doing miscellaneous work, chiefly observing and learning. For some less critical operations, she was also called in to assist, but usually as a second or third
assistant.
This was the first time she was asked to be the first assistant in a craniotomy, and she was still looking forward to it.
Layla returned to the department. Just as she entered the office, she discovered that there was another person in her seat. The moment she saw the man, all her pretty expectations were shattered to pieces like a broken mirror. She was dragged back into the stifling darkness.
She instinctively wanted to run. She turned around but heard his voice from behind. “If you want Zachary’s other leg to be disabled, you can hide from me forever.”
