Chapter 61 –
Jaxon's
POV
My day has been incredibly busy. Two hours after I got to my office, I got a call from the Council. They were calling to advise me that they had just left Kamaria. Apparently, they had finished the examination on the vehicle, and Cara was right; it had been tampered with. I felt sick at the lengths that they were willing to go to to try to force the sisters to comply with their wishes. If Cara hadn't overheard what they were planning, they might have been forced to be the chosen mates of the Beta and Gamma now. Even if Brenna and Luna managed to escape, Cara would have definitely been forced to be a breeder for Paxton. Their lives would be very different now if they had not run away.
I already knew that Paxton and his crew had done exactly what Cara said. I believed her from the start. It was clear that they desired the sisters and wanted them back very badly. Anyone with eyes could tell that from the scene they created at my gate But the Council needed proof, so we had to wait on them to investigate. At least they had looked into it. I must admit I had doubts that they would. They needed to have looked into it. Two members of Kamaria had been murdered in cold blood. The problem was that despite knowing that Paxton had planned and carried it out, they had no proof of them carrying it out. Everything had been explained satisfactorily, and there was nothing to link them to the murder.
But I knew there was actual proof. I saw when Saoirse had shown Alexei what she had seen the morning jana attacked Cara. I was pretty sure that Cara could do the same thing. If she could share the memory of what she heard in the laundry room and show it to the Council Members. To me, that should be enough proof. I knew that some committee members didn't like witches and probably wouldn't take it as proof. Council Member Floyd would take it as proof, but Council Member Sharp would not. That fact was apparant with the contempt shown to Cara by his daughter, Michela, when she was here last.
Her lack of compassion, plus all her assumptions about Cara and her sisters, showed how she felt. I asked them to come back to my pack. I did that despite their saying that the investigation was pretty much over. I wanted them to give Cara an opportunity to show them what she had overheard. See if they could recognize one of their voices. Anything for them to not just let this go. They deserved justice, and so did Beta James and his mate. I couldn't let this pass without attempting to ensure that Paxton and his men got what they deserved. Things only escalated from there. I had just gotten off the phone when Chase mindlinked me. "I have Korey with me, and I am having Blane watch Lena until it is her turn. We will be in the interview room in two minutes if you want to watch the interview," he announced. I did want to watch these interviews. We needed to know who had met with Jana and we needed to know quickly. I will not have my pack members running around colluding with her. She almost killed Ivan, and I know that whatever is going on is serious. Jana is armed and cannot be trusted. We need to figure this out today. If necessary, I will also have Anna and Sandra brought in to see if it was them. Alexei said that he would send Nadia over to try to catch the she-wolves scent. Adrik was already here in the interview room, waiting for Chase, when I entered the other room to observe. He is a vampire lie detector and very smart. Adrik can sense when people are lying.
I have to say that Korey was scared to death when she came into the interview room. Once she saw Adrik and knew what he was, she knocked her chair over while backing away from the table. It was obvious that she wanted to get away from him. That was a normal reaction of someone who is scared of vampires. Chase questioned her, but we got nothing out of it. She wasn't the one, and she watched Adrik the whole time she was in the room. Even watching him carefully when she exited. We needed to move on. We all knew she was not the one we were looking for.
There was a ten-minute gap in time before Lena came with Chase. Blane had watched her and told Chase where they were. Lena was relaxed, even when she spotted Adrik sitting there. She was not scared of him at all. She even gave him a smile. Yeah, that is definitely not normal. She had no interaction with vampires before, from what I understood. So why was her reaction so much different than Korey's was. I turned the volume up in the interview room to listen to Chase's questions.
"Lena, we have had a report of someone meeting up with a vampire near our armory. Do you have any information on who you think it might be? Or what they were doing out there?" Chase asked.
"They could have been out there for any reason. Like a clandestine meeting, I don't hang out there. I'm sorry, I don't know what a vampire would be thinking meeting out there. No offense," Lena answered Chase before aiming the last comment toward Adrik as she turned to look at him.
Adrik gave her an easy grin and replied, "None taken."
"Was anything missing from the armory, that is? Do you think that they were here to take our guns? I heard that someone had been shot at the Coven. Did they take one of our guns to do that? Is there going to be a problem between Black Adder and the Coven now?" Lena asked the questions rapid-fire as is she were scared. But her body language was not showing that she was scared. She was looking in between Chase and Adrik as if she were nervous. But we weren't falling for it. She was leaning forward, towards them, not away from Adrik. She was no more scared of him than I was. She is definitely lying. She is asking the questions and trying to lead Chase.
Chase and Adrik knew she was lying as they quickly glanced over at me through the glass. I linked Chase to let him know that I knew she was lying and to keep questioning her. I wanted her to slip up while she was still on record. I will not be going easy on her if she is willing to betray her pack. She has a good life here with her family. What would possess her to give that up? I could not see a valid reason for it, but I did know that her brother Phillip had been messing around with Jana. I doubt that I could call what they were doing was actually dating; they were more like friends with benefits.
"So, are you saying that you don't know Jana from the coven?" Chase asked her.
"I do not know her. Why, Chase? Is she the one that met someone out at the Armory?" Lena spoke carefully.
Specifying 'I do not' instead of 'I don't' is a tactic that some people use to lie. They do not want to slip up and make an admission of guilt, so they speak very specifically to make sure that they don't mess up. She was speaking slower and was more thoughtful in her responses than when she usually spoke. We all saw her look Chase dead in the eye and lie right to his face. Plus, he asked her a yes or no question. Lena is trying to be evasive here by not saying a simple yes or no, which is also a red flag.
"You can cut her loose, Chase. Keep Blane on her and set up a couple of trusted warriors to tail her. I don't want her brother Phillip or her father to catch wind of this. I think that she is the one who is meeting up with them. I doubt that Jana will be coming back for the third night in a row, especially with everyone looking for her now. I want to know where she goes and who she talks to each day. We need to have our guard up. We just found our traitor," I mindlinked Chase.
I knew that she wasn't going to admit anything to us today from the time she told her first lie. I wonder if Chase had warned Korey not to mindlink Lena? I knew without asking her that Korey had told Lena. I knew it because Lena was well prepared. She had not been surprised by anything that Chase had asked her. Korey had not just been surprised but terrified at seeing a vampire in the room with her. It was a waste of our time to interview Lena anymore.
She was just too guarded right now to make a mistake. She was expecting us to keep going, and we needed to catch her by surprise to get anything out of her. I am going to check the gate log for answers. We always keep a log of who enters and exits our pack. A copy of it gets sent to me daily, and I have it in my office now. Most only leave to go shopping or visit another pack. I have a sneaking suspicion that I will see Lena's name on the list. I immediately checked the sheet to see if my suspicions were correct.
I was incredibly disappointed to see Lena's name on the list, not just once but twice this week. I pulled out the binder for the last two months, and she hadn't left the pack once in those two months. Yeah, we found our traitor. I wanted to know more, but we needed to proceed carefully here. I can't let her know that she is a suspect. We need her to think that she has outsmarted us, for her to keep up with her plan. I need to make sure that we keep a much closer eye on her until we know what she is trying to do. I linked Chase and told him that we needed to watch her for the next week, especially if she left the pack. I wanted to know where she went the next time she left our pack.
I won't give her an opportunity to cause Cara or Brenna a problem. I am sure she wants to get back at them for the incident on the training field. She was still obviously mad at them, as she would not let up on them whenever she saw them. She is the one who went too far, she deserved the punishment that she was getting for disrespecting her Luna. I have never had Lena cause any real problems in the pack before. She is mostly just annoying to me, but it is frustrating that she won't accept the fact that I am not interested in her at all. I know that she is about to cause some problems and issues now. I just hope that whatever it is doesn't ruin Brenna's Luna ceremony. I will not let Lena off easy if she messes things up for Brenna.
