Chapter 120 –
Jaxon's POV
I understood why Robert was not himself now. When he told me that Saoirse was pregnant, I was stunned. I completely understood what he was going through. He was terrified that Saoirse would leave with his pup. He was right to be scared. She was pissed at him. That would not be good, as none of us knew where she had come from. It would be almost impossible for him to find her or their pup if she didn't want to return. That kind of strain can make a man go too far.
I didn't want to be caught in the middle of this, as the Alpha, I cannot get involved with every conflict in the pack. If I had to do that, I wouldn't even have time to sleep. My anger at Lena ignites again and I remind myself that after we speak to Adra, the other interviews start. Anton had assured me that he would be here for each of them to help me out. I must ensure my pack is safe for my mate and pup."Sit down, Adra," I told her. She was still fighting to try to run after Robert.
"Call Robert back here. I need to speak to him. I need him to know just how much I love him," Adra insisted, still fighting Gregory to chase Robert down.
She fights against him for the next minute refusing to listen when I heard Saoirse sigh. The next instant, Adra and Gregory are pulled away from the door, with the door slamming shut. They both stared at Saoirse in surprise. "What? She was refusing to listen, so I helped you out," Saoirse muttered. I honestly wasn't surprised by her actions. I have noticed a few things about Saoirse: she doesn't allow people to waste her time. I am the same way, so I forced myself not to smile at what she had done. This was a serious situation. I needed to get as much information out of her as I could.
Adra slowly dropped into the chair, and Gregory stood near the door. He didn't have to. It wouldn't open for her no matter what she did. Saoirse had mentioned on the way down here that she would do that, but I didn't mention that to him. Anton had placed his chair against the wall, sitting behind her. "If you're reading this on any site other than ob, this content has been stolen! Real fans know the latest updates and exclusive insights are always on Job. Support original creators and visit the source." She would have to turn all the way around to see him. The fact that he was here was making her nervous. I didn't know if it was because he was a vampire or because he could read her mind that had made her so rattled.
"Adra, we already know you threw in with Lena and her plans. Why would you do such a thing?" I asked. I wanted to start slowly so I could learn to read her expressions.
"I had to. I was running out of time. This bitch here," she motioned towards Saoirse, "Just showed up out of nowhere and tried to take Robert away from me. I knew from how he treated her that she was his mate. I couldn't just let her do that after I spent years trying to get his affection," Adra huffed.
"Did you not think that we would figure it out? That you had been involved?" I asked.
"At the time, I only cared about not losing Robert. She doesn't deserve him. She doesn't know him like I do. She hadn't been here long, yet he wanted her so badly. It hurt me to see him with her. Robert was the only person who cared about me here. He told me that he would personally keep me safe. That helped me get past the fear that I had after arriving here. One day, I realized that I cared for him. Over the years, our connection grew. I saw him every week, and we had dinner. He would sit with me and talk. I wanted him. He didn't have a mate, and he was young. He liked the attention I gave him. He was falling in love with me until she showed up," Adra told us.
It was clear that she was unremorseful about what she had done. She honestly felt that since she had known him longer, he now belonged to her. Love wasn't like that, and neither was finding your true mate. I didn't have time to get into that with her right now. I needed information and didn't want her getting too far off track. I glanced down next to me to see if Saoirse was OK. I know that had to be hard for her to hear Adra say. Yet Saoirse sat there with a slight smile on her face. She seemed less upset now than before, which was a little unusual. I could tell Adra was telling us the truth. Her desire for Robert was clear.
It was also clear that she was still fuming over being stopped when she had Robert under her spell. I glanced over at Anton, who gave me a slight nod to tell me she was telling the truth. We discussed this in the office this morning and decided to do it like this. Quietly, to keep her from arguing with him about her lies. She wouldn't know that he had been the lie detector we needed to find the truth of the matter. It would also make her think I knew when she was lying. That should throw her off the story she would try to make up. "So, Lena filled you in on what she needed you to do for her?" I asked.
"She said it would be easy. All I had to do was go up to the Alpha floor and take Cara, Brenna, and Luna. I was then to take them outside the pack to meet up with the men who wanted them." Adra spoke so low that I could barely hear her. "So you agreed to do that? What did you get out of it?" I asked. I knew the answer but wanted to know what she would say.
"I would get Robert out of it. Plus, Saoirse losing her daughter would be the punishment she deserved for trying to take Robert away from me. We just needed to get him alone. He had been avoiding me, and then someone else started to bring my delivery out to me. I didn't want anyone else. He can't just ignore me like that. We had a bond, and he tried to get out of it. He cared for me, too. Why else would he stay and comfort me after Saoirse got jealous and left? He came to me because he cared for me. I knew she warned him not to come, but she couldn't make him stop caring about me. You lost that day, and I won, Saoirse. Why you fucking came back here, I will never know," Adra announced with a smirk.
She was baiting Saoirse, and I wondered why she thought she could. I looked down at Saoirse again and murmured, "Just let me finish the interview, then she is all yours." Saoirse's shoulders visibly relaxed.
She had been trying to play it off, but she was upset. Anyone would be when their mate is involved. Adra was taunting her, and I knew I needed to speed this up. I didn't know how long Saoirse would stand to be tormented like this. I don't think I would have made it this far myself. I would have ripped another man apart by now. I know I wanted to kill Rex for touching my mate.
"Did Lena mention to you who was involved in this plan?" I asked.
"No, she just said she had a backup plan. If things didn't work out with me, I was supposed to grab the three of them from your apartment. Knowing now that two vampires that had chased me before were involved, I was sorry I agreed. Nothing worked out properly. I have to claim some of the blame for myself. If I had just fucked Robert instead of trying to make out with him, we wouldn't be here now. I would have swept him away from here after Saoirse left. He would have been so heartbroken by her leaving that he would have let me do it. By the time Saoirse returned, if she even did, he would have been long gone," Adra admitted.
"So she never mentioned anyone else's name to you?" I asked with a frown. I honestly thought that Adra would have had more information than she did.
"No, she didn't mention anyone, and I didn't ask. I didn't care about anything other than getting Robert. He was all I wanted or needed. Lena was the only one I knew about. If she had mentioned Jana or Anika to me, I wouldn't have agreed to help them," Adra told us and then shuddered. She cast a glance at Anton sitting behind her with a pointed look. She didn't trust him either, which was weird. He and Alexei were on the team that saved her. I guess she was so upset at the time that she didn't recognize him.
"So, in essence, you agreed to betray the pack you have lived in for over three years to get Robert? You knew he didn't want you. I have heard him tell you that myself. He always wanted to wait for his mate. You should have realized that fact two years ago. So why did you keep after him? You seem intelligent, but that was not a smart move. Why didn't you come out to meet others in the pack? You could have found someone who would love and care for you. Why did it have to be Robert?" I asked the million-dollar question.
Adra's eyes turned dreamy as if she were remembering something, and said, "I was so scared when I got here. I knew the coven who rescued me was next door to the pack. I was still scared that one of them might try to come after me again. I didn't know Jana and Anika were there. Robert put his arm around my shoulders and told me I was safe here. That none of you would allow me to be hurt again. I thought that he was speaking from his heart. I fell in love with him right then. Who wouldn't? He is strong, attractive, and caring. I wanted him. At the time, he didn't have a mate, and I prayed every night that he would never find one," Adra said.
Her eyes narrowed, and she looked at Saoirse, "You should never have come here. I hate you, Saoirse. I won't rest until I can punish you for taking him away from me. Look at you. You can probably have any man you want. Why did you have to pick mine?" Adra was wailing when she finished, but surely she knew it was not Saoirse's fault.
The Goddess herself had chosen Saoirse for Robert. She always has a reason for her pairings. I went to tell her just that when Saoirse held her arm out in front of me. She wanted to say something, and I was not going to stop her. The questions I wanted to ask had all been asked by this time. I had already decided before we interviewed her what was going to happen. I was not going to let her go to come back at a later time to try to attack us. She was done. But I was going to stay here to support Saoirse. I also wanted to see Saoirse deal with Adra. I knew this was going to be an interesting conversation between them.
