Chapter 1196
Therefore, she didn't intend to face him head-on. Taking a baby sip, Lauren put her glass of cocktail down while bringing Millie's raised arm down.
"C'mon, don't drink so much in this kind of place! Do you know you have a neon sign above your head that says I'm a pap' with the way you're dressed? It'd be a miracle if you can get an exclusive headline!"
She even shoved Millie's bag further in as she pointed out. So carefree; just how careless could this girl get? Did she want to lose another camera and break the bank, paying for it, then cry buckets?
The present Millie was very much like her, dressed casually, probably even sloven to many people, but she was kindhearted, optimistic, and it was comfortable to be around her! That was where they differed, perhaps because she grew up in a loving family. However, the world was cruel, not giving you a smooth sailing life just because you were any kinder or nicer. In the world of survival of the fittest, oppression was everywhere. Many of Millie's articles were stolen by her colleagues and higher-ups; it wasn't that she wasn't upset, or had she never protested, but it ended with her being forced to switch companies and start from the very bottom! Perhaps, there was no such thing as equity in this world!
Fortunately, she had a good mentality, getting back on her feet after a cry session. Life was like that sometimes; it'd push you forward whether you liked it or not.
The same could be said about her. Hadn't she also somehow got herself mixed with a man she shouldn't have and experienced an indescribably bitter and miserable ordeal? And who would give her the explanation?
So, she had to seek justice herself!
"Lauren, I mean, Tevye, you're looking down on me..."
Millie pouted, feigning unhappiness but held up a fist in no time. "One day, I'll definitely get my exclusive and show those naysayers what I'm capable of!" Freemasonry, Lauren held her hand.
"I know you will! But before that, my dear Millie, you're also a beauty; we need to make sure you can walk out here alive! Do you think you won't attract those big bad wolves by wearing this? It's getting late; let's go! As bad as you want your gossip, let's not do it here! A free meal isn't that easily obtainable!"
What kind of place was East Bannpool? People who could enter were either powerbrokers or so rich that they'd burn money to keep themselves warm. The only reason women could enjoy themselves for free here was to provide convenience for these people. It seemed to have become a standard for nightclubs. Noble or lowly, angelic or sl*tty, any woman can enter and leave as they please.
But, it was prohibited to take pictures here, even with a phone! Even if a paparazzi could just barely enter with their cameras, they might not even be able to leave with what they managed to snap! Or worse, they might be taught a lesson. Definitely not worth it! Her hopes of getting an exclusive that night were very likely little to none!
If not, how come East Bannpool was still standing and kicking with so many children of the wealthy families visiting? All that that leaked were mostly, if not all, innocuous!
Lauren had long reminded her, yet she still wasn't convinced! But it was also impossible to get an exclusive if she didn't track down from the very beginning. Hence, she sometimes admired Millie's devotion to the job!
Chuckling, Millie hugged her. "I knew you were the best!"
Only she would care so much about her!
The two had met by an elevator by chance. Lauren had gone to take something from Elijah, and Millie was crying buckets as she was close to being fired for losing the company's camera, plus Lauren had bumped into her, accidentally breaking her phone. As the two started getting in touch, they unexpectedly ended up as good friends.
Half a year down the line, the only thing left they didn't do was call or see each other every day.
To steer clear from her past, plus she just gave birth in addition to other whatnots, she never contacted Sharon. So she cherished having a soul sister like Millie.
Letting go of her, Millie shook her head.
"But I still can't leave! East Bannpool
has several exits. I
all be dead if I lose
them. Our team has been following them for over a week. Don't worry, know what I'm doing! My colleague will come and take my place after midnight, and I can sleep in the car..."
Lauren checked the time and said, "Then I'll stay with you!"
"Oh, no, please don't! You'll only hinder my actions here." Millie waved her hand as she looked around, then fished a business card out of her pocket as though she was reminded of something.
"Don't you have a recording session
tomorrow night? Hurry up and go home! This is Pedron Lawson, the director's business card. A massive TV series wants you to dub for them; they said to do the early parts, the seductive part. Take a look and see if you're interested. I'd get thirty thousand dollars commission if you do the job! What do you say we split the commission?"
Holding Lauren's hand, Millie sighed. "I really envy you and your angelic voice. Not only do you not have to brave the weather, but you have people begging you with money!" But before Lauren could say anything, Millie shook her head.
"No, no, I'm the lucky one. I'll get paid without even having to lift a finger! Tevye, you're my lucky cat. No, I have to treat you even better now. I can't let you run away from me!" After giving her a hug, Millie urged.
"Hurry up, go home, and take care of your vocal chord. Never drink again! Strange though, you don't have to do anything to your voice, yet it's still ethereal, but my voice is still the same when I take lozenges every day. Ah... Ah..." Millie's attempt at trying her vocals amused Lauren in an instant.
"Haha, can you not be so cute? You can have all the commission, but please, I beg you to stop losing your things, or no commission in the world is enough for you to pay for the equipment and phone!"
She really never thought her voice was any special. But now that she was sought after and even had fans, she couldn't help wondering if it was the case.
Lauren took the business card from Millie and kept it away. Though she was signed to a label, she had the last say in work! What could she say? She was a member of the Luther family; she had Elijah behind her back! Hence, those who weren't oblivious in the industry would give her the respect she deserved.
"I know. That's why I've changed to a smaller bag; I won't lose it! Go, shoo, scram! Don't nag like a grandmother! Say, I'll let you know if anything next time!"
As Millie urged, she shot her eyes in Willy's direction a couple of times, but she dared not make promises in her heart.
Not explaining, Lauren got up and nodded. "Okay..."
Sometimes it felt as though you had known someone forever, even if you two had just met. She thought that was the case with Millie and her. "Call me if anything! My phone is on 24/7!"
"Alright!"
Lauren was still keeping tabs on
what was going on over at Willy's, even deliberately dragged for a while until he had his back wholly faced to her before she slowly turned around and walked. She walked with her head held high in front of the bar this time. It wasn't until she walked past him, rushing to the exit in one breath, that she stopped and slowly looked back at him.
