Chapter 23
Chapter 23
Arthur’s throat was dry, and his voice sounded hoarse: “Adriane…“
He then coughed, cleared his throat, and called Adriane again since she did not respond.
He awakened Adriane. She raised her head and started asking. “You’re awake? Is everything alright? Do you want some water?”
Arthur did not know which question to answer first, so he shook his head and said, “The floor is cold, you stand up first.”
“Oh ok. I just slept for a while” Adriane scratched the back of her head. She was afraid that Arthur would think that she was slack in her work. The dark circles under her eyes proved that she did not sleep well last night.
Arthur sighed. He was not blaming her, this silly girl.
She struggled to stand up with her hands clutching on the bedside, but she failed and sat back
“Are you ok?” Arthur hid his worries in his plain tone.
“My legs felt numb,” Adriane replied and slightly thumped her legs..
Arthur wanted to hold her up and rub her legs, but his sickness limited him. He could not even support himself.
He struggled and finally turned his face away, “Take it slow.”
Adriane did not notice Arthur’s struggle. She continued thumping her legs and asked, “You didn’t answer the questions. How do you feel now?”
“I’m feeling better,”
“I’m glad to hear that!” Adriane smiled. She took care of him for the whole night.
After her legs felt better, she then walked to the window. She pulled back the curtains, and the sunlight flooded in. The sky looked clean and fresh right after the rain stopped. Maybe the atmosphere in the room was peaceful. Arthur’s sickness made him seem more approachable, and she was not afraid of
him anymore.
She stood by the window, turned around, and looked at him. “I didn’t mean to come back late last night, I had no sense of direction, so I didn’t realize. Zack had changed the destination to the race track. Artie, can you please forgive me?”
Arthur did not expect that she would straightforwardly mention this. His anger suddenly drained away. Unlike what Adriane expected, Arthur’s face became cold and asked, “Zack brought you to the race track without your consent?”
“Yeah. I already taught him a lesson. He won’t do it again.” She smiled at him.
“You think that’s the point?” Arthur thought and became mad.
Adnane did not notice his thoughts and continued, “Also, I saw your Isabella at the race track! She is beautiful!”
Arthur did not reply. He had no time to care about other matters since he was sick yesterday. He decided to send people to investigate precisely what happened yesterday
She walked near him and looked at his pale but handsome face, “I admitted my mistake, and I think you should also reflect on yourself.”
Arthur looked back at her, “What do I need to reflect on?”
“Why didn’t you go back to the bungalow? The rain was pouring yesterday”
He did not know what to reply. After a while, he sighed, “Yael is such a blabbermouth”
Yael, who was guarding outside of the room, sneezed and muttered to himself, “Who is talking about me?”
Chapter 23
Adriane explained, “I forced him to tell me, please don’t blame him”
Yael was not completely recovered from the last punishment
Arthur let out a cold hum. Adriane could not tell if he would listen to her. Adriane squatted down next to his bed, raised her head, and looked at him, “I will give you a heads–up next time I can’t come home on time, so can you promise me you will take good care of your body?”
“You are thinking about next time?” Arthur lifted his thin lips.
“No… What I meant to say is that…”
“Let Yael in. I want to wash up now.”
Adriane had to walk away since Arthur did not want to continue talking about this.
“I was not waiting for you yesterday” Adriane heard Arthur murmuring after she was a few steps away from him. She smiled without looking at him. She knew that what he said was definitely not true.
“I was enjoying the rain.” Arthur continued in an unnatural and rigid tone. She was speechless.
“Then I found out that the rain is nothing to be enjoyed. I won’t do it next time.”
Adriane covered her mouth with her fingers just in case she would laugh out loud. Forget about it. Although he was acting weird, he promised her that he
would look after himself.
Yael was in the room for a long time. Adriane finished her breakfast downstairs and turned on her phone. As she expected, numerous missed calls appeared, and her message box was full of unread texts. Zack Frost and his parents expressed several “kind regards” but Adriane could not be bothered. to reply to any of them.
She called Edward Stewart back. “Adria, how could you have done something like this?” The first sentence after Edward picked up was with a reproachful
tone.
Adriane kept a cold face but replied with an aggrieved tone, “Father, what did I do wrong?”
“It’s your cousin! He was injured badly and needed to stay in bed for a week!”
Adriane rolled her eyes. Staying in bed for one week was not even a big deal. Zack Frost sounded like he had died from Edward Stewart’s tone.
“Dad, do you think it’s my fault?” Adriane squeezed her nose, making her voice sound even more pitiful. “Zack tricked me and brought me to the race track. He forced me to hang out with his friends, and they were slandering Artie. I told them I planned to visit Jenkins Family, but they forced me to ride a horse. Zack injured himself, and now he blamed me for this. Then maybe the only person I should confess my grievance toward is Mr. Jenkins?”
Edward panicked. Adriane had gained a brilliant reputation in Jenkins family. This incident cannot disturb the elders of Jenkins family!
“Zack was being too absurd! Don’t worry, Adria. I will teach him a lesson!” Edward corrected himself immediately.
Adriane rubbed her inner thigh after she hung up on Edward. She had never ridden a horse in her life. Although she had riding gear, her skin was still
chafed where the equipment had been.
While she planned to go back to her room and put on some ointment, Arthur appeared in the living room, in his wheelchair. “What are you doing?” he
asked in a weird tone
“Ah?” Adrung removed her hand from her thigh, “Nothing!”
After the eye contact between them, she realized her gesture was misleading, and she could feel her face reddening with embarrassment. “It’s not what you think…” she explained in a stammering way.
“What?” He continued asking
Adriane’s face was so red, “it’s just, my legs were injured…”
