“I don’t have a reason or an excuse being here by this time,” Ethan admitted, his words hanging in the air like a confession.
Hazel, with a skeptical expression, crossed her arms over her chest.
“What does that mean? Hazel asked, her curiosity and a hint of caution evident in her tone.
“I just needed to see how the...” Ethan began explaining, his sentence trailing off when Liam’s face popped through the doorway.
The little boy had gotten impatient and wondered why his mom was stalling had gone to check on her himself.
“Mommy, I need more water,” he demanded groggily. His face lit up the moment he saw Ethan and he ran out of the door,
hugging his legs.
“Mr. Princess!” he squealed, and Ethan greeted him fondly, rubbing his head.
“I missed you,” Liam admitted, still hugging Ethan’s legs. He had been puzzled when Ethan disappeared suddenly, and he had
asked for him multiple times that day.
“Why don’t you visit more often? You promised,” he stated accusingly. Liam felt love and attraction toward Ethan. There was just
something about him that he adored whenever Ethan was around.
“Well, I’m trying to get your mommy here to let me visit more often,” Ethan stated lightly. Hazel’s brows furrowed.
“Wait, what?” she thundered.
“What I’m saying is, I would love to keep visiting. I really enjoy spending time with your kids, Hazel,” Ethan admitted, glancing
down at Liam’s adorable head hugging his legs. Hazel felt a tightening and suffocating feeling within her. For a moment, she was
speechless, looking away from the two, taking deep breaths.
“Please, mommy,” Liam pleaded, turning to look at her while holding Ethan’s arm. Seeing the look on her son’s face, eagerly
pleading to spend more time with his father, created a helpless feeling within her.

The two were looking at her with hopeful expressions. “Can you give us a minute?” Hazel finally spoke, turning to her son.
“Mummy, but...” Liam tried to persuade her, still holding Ethan’s palm.
“But nothing, Liam!” she ordered. “Go back inside, Liam! Now!” she yelled. Liam’s eyes widened. His mom had never yelled at
him before. Liam turned to Ethan with a helpless look.
Ethan felt a pain in his chest and knelt in front of the little boy. “Mommy wants you inside, go,” he urged. Liam released Ethan’s
finger from his grip, turned finally, and slowly trudged back inside. The door closed, leaving Hazel and Ethan standing in the
corridor in an awkward silence.
Hazel took a deep breath, trying to collect herself. “Why are you here, Ethan?” she asked, her voice a mix of pain and confusion.
“Hazel, I don’t think...” Ethan was saying.
“You don’t think what?!” Hazel interrupted, exasperation evident in her voice. She was almost yelling now. “Liam’s my
son!” she declared. “I get to scold him when necessary as his mom. You don’t get to tell me how to bring up my kids,” she stated,
defensive and assertive, trying to put Ethan in his place.
Ethan sighed, realizing he had stepped into a delicate territory. “Hazel, I just wanted to spend more time with them. I missed
them, and I thought they missed me too,” he admitted attempting to ease the tension.
She was upset, Liam was ready to flaunt her instructions for the very first time, and all because of this man who had rejected
them without a second thought. She was simmering inside of her, trying to keep her composule. She took a deep breath,
attempting to calm herself down.
“You shouldn’t be here,” she stated, the unsaid words 1 don’t want you here‘ echoing in her mind.

“I know,” Ethan stated with a sigh. “I felt restless. I hadn’t seen Daisy in days now,” Ethan added, a pleading tone in his voice.
The vulnerability in his expression softened Hazel’s stance, but she was determined to keep her guard up.
“Hazel,” he stepped closer. “I know we’ve got history. But I really do love your kids.” Hazel looked up

immediately, meeting Ethan’s eyes. She noticed his eyes were brimming with sincerity.
“Would you let me be friends?” Ethan asked, running his hands through his hair. Hazel stared at him. The cold, elusive Ethan
Wild was asking if he could be friends with some five–year–olds. He looked so different. The cool, calm, collected mån she once
knew appeared very anxious, like he was about to be sentenced to death, as if a word from her l*ps could be his undoing.
“Those kids really light up my life. I can’t explain it,” Ethan stated, his voice cracking with a small smile. Meeting them had, in lots
of ways, changed him.
“Let me visit more? We have a bad history, but I swear I mean no harm. I just want to be someone you and your
kids can rely on. Like your friend, or an older brother,” he pleaded. Like your family, that was what he wanted to say.
Hazel felt her resolve breaking. No, no, no, Hazel cried within herself, no! Getting closer would only complicate things even
further. How was she to explain that?
She fisted her palm in determination.
“I’m grateful for all your help, but this should end now,” she stated,

“What?” [than asked in alarm.
“I would like you to keep your distance,” she added.
“Hazel,” Ethan called, his voice cracking softly
“Til repay you for everything, the ward, and even Dr. Gomez,” she added.
“Hazel, what nonsense are you spewing?!” Ethan asked, surprised at the sudden turn Hazel had taken.
“Goodnight, Ethan,” she said instead, turning to leave.
“No, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have pressed on, he said, grabbing her arm.
“I didn’t do all of that for reasons like this, Hazel. I’m not imposing or demanding you let me into your life, but rather, I’m pleading,
Hazel,” he begged.
“I didn’t do any of that for selfish reasons Hazel.”
“You have no idea how much I’ve changed since I met those kids. They’re the most wonderful things I’ve ever encountered; don’t
push me away,” he begged.
Hazel bit her l*ps, willing herself not to cry. She couldn’t bring herself to meet his eyes.
“Goodnight,” she repeated, entering the ward and leaving Ethan there closing the door behind her,
As she stepped inside, the weight of her decisions pressed upon her. She leaned on the door. She could feel Ethan’s
desperation, his sincerity. Feeling weak she stumbled inside and slid into a chair heart beating rapidly against her chest.
Meanwhile, Ethan stood outside, the cool night breeze doing little to calm the storm within him. The connection he felt with
Hazel’s kids had brought unexpected changes into his life and he wasn’t ready to let
1. go.
Lost in his thoughts, he slowly walked away from the ward, his back slouched in defeat. Hazel didn’t want him anywhere her
kids. Slowly he made his way down stairs to the car.

Thinking back to the way he had treated her, he had not right. Would things have been different? he wondered. If he hasn’t met,
Bella that night, would he and Hazel still be together? Would her kids be his now? The thoughts brought about swirling emotions
that left a lump in his chest making it hard to breathe.
