Alpha King’s Wolfless Mate by Scarlett Higgins

Chapter 44

Chapter 44

Nora POV

The closer the Moon Dance got, the more concerned I was with how close Blake and I were getting. I really enjoyed every minute of our fairytale life together but I couldn’t go anywhere in the castle without hearing some excited young wolves talking about how they hoped to find their mates.

There was so much excitement. I wondered if Blake felt any excitement or anticipation at the possibility of meeting his fated mate.

It bothered me.

A fated mate was something I would never have again. Not just because Helen had stolen my wolf. If I ever got Clara back, I’d never feel the same about Jeremy again. My mate bond was ruined.

It was hard for me to feel excited or happy about all the young optimistic wolves ready to find their mates.

Then there was the matter of Blake.

“There you are,” Blake said, finding me on the balcony off our bedroom.

Speak of the devil!

I was looking down at the gardens where lights were being put up for the dance. The servan t s were testing the string lights and they kept flickering on and off.

“They’ve been decorating for this dance for a long time. It must be a really important event,” I commented.

I pointed down to the servan t s that were moving ice sculptures into the gardens. They had two swans k*ssing and forming a heart with their n*ecks. There were other ice sculptures of Cupid shooting a bow with a heart-tipped arrow.

Each sculpture had its own electric cooling unit to keep it from melting.

“There’s so much romantic imagery. And everyone is chattering about their big romantic plans once they find their mate,” I said.

I was trying to get Blake to talk about finding his own mate. It wasn’t something we’d had a conversation about before.

“It is. One of the few events that all the packs get together for,” Blake said. He came up behind me and sl*pped his arms around my waist.

Instinctively, I leaned against him, letting him hug me and k*ss my n*eck.

“Are you looking forward to it?” I asked softly.

“Hmm,” Blake hummed. “As the Lycan King, I am required to host it. I do like pack events.”

“That’s all?” I pressed, hoping he was in the mood to open up to me.

“I don’t want to go this year,” he said gruffly, nuzzling my n*eck with his nose.

“But, Blake, you’re the Lycan King. You technically haven’t found your true mate yet,” I said, creasing my brow. I didn’t understand why he didn’t want to go to his own party.

Especially if it meant finding his own mate.

“I don’t need to go to a party where I’m meant to find my mate. I don’t need a mate bond,” he said.

“That’s…. can I ask why?” I asked, turning in his arms and h o o k i n g my hands around the back of his n*eck.

Blake cold ski p them all, but one day or another he’d eventually be affected by the mate bond. If in happened years from now when we had several children together and I was even more in love with him, that would be even more painful.

Now that Binke had declared I was enough, there was another matter that started to irritate me.

The pain I’d feb when Jeremy had abandoned me for Helen was a pains and heartache Tid never wish on anyone else,

Tonight was the right. It had to be. I’d found my resolve and I knew it was the right thing to do. It was better to get it over with faster, like ripping off a band-aid.

“Can I take you somewhere tonight?” I asked sweetly. I’d thought about the best way to do this, and I’d come up with a few ideas

Blake arched an eyebrow

I tilted my head back and looked up at the full moon. “It is the perfect night to be out late.”

Blake grinned and we headed to the courtyard. “I can’t argue with that. I’ve always wanted to run with you on a full moon”

With a nervous laugh, I shook my head. I didn’t need to remind him we wouldn’t be running in wolf form, unfortunately. It was something I had longed for, too.

I gave the driver our destination and slid in the back with Blake.

My stomach fluttered and I closed the space between us, k*ssing his l*ps firmly.

I didn’t like mic k i n g Blake or using his emotions against him, but this was the only way to make a fast, clean break.

It seemed fitting to end everything where it started.

Blake pulled me under him and k*ssed my passionately. He wrapped his arms around my back and I locked my knees around his waist.

We rolled in the grass, crushing the flowers and releasing their beautiful fragrance into the air. It couldn’t be more romantic or perfect if we’d been in a honeymoon suite.
